Presidents Message I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With another year among us we have a lot of exciting things planned this year and hope you can join us. Our November meeting was at Lonnie s place, and for those brave enough to drive through the winter storm that day we made 10 th century locks from instructions that Elmer Roush (one or our conference demonstrators) was kind enough to write up for us to use. This proved to be a challenging project with many techniques used to make the lock. At the end of the day we had four finished locks and a couple others that were very close to being complete. For those that brought their guns Lonnie had pumpkins strewn all over the hillside to test our marksmanship. Needless to say I don t think many pumpkins survived. A couple reminders, if you have changed your email please let Lonnie know so he can update our records, we ve been getting a handful of emails back saying it s an invalid email address. Also if you haven t renewed your membership dues please send those to Lonnie. The member s gallery on our website is looking a bit bare. Send pictures of things you have made small or big to Bob or me so we can see what our members are doing out in the forge. Stay warm and I hope to see you at the January meeting with Master Blacksmith Peter Renzetti, which will be a real treat! Keep the Fire Hot, Shane Hall
JANUARY MEETING Demonstrator: Peter Renzetti Content: "Puddled People", unique sculpture techniques Location: Lightning Forge, 4757 Plum St Murray, UT 84123 Date & Time: January 19th 9:00-6:00 and 20th 9:00-1:00 (registration will start at 8:30) Fee: $30.00 Iron Trade: Something made from a railroad spike Note: Bring something for the Iron in the Hat and/or the Auction BIOGRAPHY Peter A. Renzetti was raised in the arts and crafts community of Arden, Delaware. At 16 years old he started blacksmithing as a hobby. In 1968 he opened his own forge in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvaniaand called it The Arden Forge company. In 1973, Peter was part of the founding of the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA). He was then moved the shop to a larger location in Dilworthtown Pennsylvaniain 1975. In 1992, the Arden Forge became the new home for the Samuel Yellin Metalworkers (SYM) when the Philadelphia location was forced to close. For the next 12 years, Peter was the master smith for the SYM in addition to maintaining his own business. After 38 successful years, the Arden Forge Co closed and Peter retired in December of 2007. Now living in Clayton, DE with his wife, he is able to devote time to his multitude of hobbies (steam boating, model engineering, stringed instruments the list goes on). Puddled People by Peter A Renzetti This unique sculpture technique developed by Peter A. Renzetti of Arden, Delaware uses an oxy-acetylene mini-torch and 1/16 steel welding rod to form miniature human figures performing all types of activities. This is accomplished by shaping a continuous bead of molten steel in any direction and volume. The approximately 1 to 1.25 inch tall figures emerge with motion and form. Often apparatus, tools and equipment are added in scale to complete the sculptures. It requires precision welding control, sculpting abilities, and three-dimensional vision to create these pieces.
