In Defense of Holy Scripture HaDavar November 14, 2017 Ron Keller Session 7 Does Biblical Prophecy Support Divine Revelation? Biblical prophecy constitutes one-third to one-fourth of the Bible; yet its importance is constantly downplayed by those who dismiss it as having no practical significance, or those who object on the grounds it is a fad that takes people s eyes off Jesus. The Bible teaches just the opposite, preaching Bible prophecy especially the return of our Lord motivates holy living (Romans 13:12-14; 1 Peter 4:7-11; 1 John 3:2-3). I love Bible prophecy; there are 4 reasons: 1) It sets the God of the Bible apart from all other so-called gods; 2) It confirms the accuracy and infallibility of God s Word; 3) It has been an effective evangelistic tool in winning people to Christ; 4) It has created a greater interest for people to study their Bible. The Challenge from God The character of God Biblical prophecy begins with a God who knows the future; He knows the beginning and the ending of all things (Isaiah 46:9-10). The challenge from God for false gods to predict the future There is no one who knows the future except the God who controls the future (Isaiah 41:21-24); the Bible is the only holy book that contains fulfilled prophecy not the sayings of Buddha or Confucius; not the Quran, the Hindu Vedas, or the Book of Mormon. The Conditions of a True Prophet The presumptuousness of a false prophet If he speaks in the name of the Lord and it does not happen he is to be put to death (Deuteronomy 18:20-22). 1

The proof of a true prophet He should be able to accurately reveal the future, but also the past (Isaiah 41:22); truth lies at the foundation as to who is a true prophet. The Certainty of Fulfilled Prophecies The revelation of future events in biblical prophecy There are as many as 1000 different prophecies in the Scripture all relating to future events; many have been fulfilled relating to people, cities, kings, nations, empires and various world events; to show you how replete the Scriptures are with prophetic truth, there are 20 consecutive chapters in Isaiah, 17 consecutive chapters in Jeremiah, 9 in Ezekiel; 2 in Amos, etc. The ridicule of the book of Daniel No book in the Bible is more ridiculed than the book of Daniel; his prophecies are so detailed and uttered 400 years before they were fulfilled that the book was declared a worthless collection of forgeries written around 165 BC. A third century pagan philosopher, Porphyry aimed at destroying the Christian faith by attacking the book of Daniel. The reasons to support the early dating of Daniel...There is sufficient evidence that Daniel was written around 530 BC; there are 3 reasons: 1) Daniel is part of the Jewish Scriptures established in 440 BC; 2) Daniel is part of the Septuagint which began in Alexandria, Egypt in 250 BC; 3) Daniel is part of the Dead Sea Scrolls which contain an Aramaic and Hebrew text spoken in the 6th century BC and not the 2nd century BC. The respect for Daniel as a prophet He prophesied 4 major empires: Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome and the collapse of Rome into 10 nations which became Europe (2, 7, 9); this ranges in time from 605 BC to 476 AD. He prophesied the rebuilding of Jerusalem under Nehemiah completed in 396 BC (9:25). He prophesied the coming Messiah prince and His triumphal entry into Jerusalem; and His crucifixion when Messiah shall be cut off, but not for 2

Himself (9:26-27); he prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by Titus of Rome in 70 AD (9:26). There is a section of Daniel s prophecy that is so detailed that skeptical scholars say it could not have been written by Daniel; it was the wars between the kings of the north (Syria) and the kings of the south (Egypt) resulting in a 200 year war (11:1-35); let s reveal the amazing details. 1. Three more kings after Cyrus and Darius will arise in Persia; Cambyses (530 BC), Pseudo-Smerdis (522 BC), Darius I Hystaspes (521-486) and a fourth will be richer and stir up trouble against Greece; the 4th was Xerxes or Ahasuerus (485-465) who launched a campaign against Greece and was defeated twice (11:1-2). 2. Alexander the Great (334-330 BC) would rule the world and do according to his will (11:3); upon his death his empire would be divided among his four generals and not his blood relatives (11:4). 3. He then describes a clash between the king of the North (Syria) who unsuccessfully invaded and the king of the South (Egypt); he writes of a peace agreement between the king of the South, Ptolemy I Soter, by offering his daughter Bernice in marriage to Seleucus I Nicator; the marriage ended in divorce which resulted in jealousy, murder and revenge (246-221 BC; 11:5-8). 4. Another king of the North, Antiochus III sought control of Egypt and subdued Egypt in the battle of Raphia (217 BC;11:9-15); the kingdoms were not united so Antiochus III offered his daughter in marriage to the king hoping she would be a spy in Egypt; it backfired as there was true love; in anger Antiochus III attacked the coastlands of Greece where he was met by a Roman army; he stumbled, fell and was never found (11:16-19). 5. Antiochus III s son Seleucus IV Philopator (187-176 BC) heavily taxed his people to pay Rome but he was poisoned to death by his treasurer Heliodorus (11:20). 6. Daniel then writes of a vile person who comes on peaceably but will not give honor to royalty but seizes the kingdom by intrigue; he is referring to Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-163 BC) who seizes the throne from Seleucus IV by murdering his son who was heir to the throne; his first mission was to become another Alexander the Great and rule the entire Grecian Empire (11:21-24); when attempting to overthrow the king of the South, a Roman commander, Popilius Leanus came against him on ships from Cyprus (11:25-30). 3

7. Antiochus is enraged and on his return to Damascus takes his wrath out on the Jews and commits the abomination of desolation by sacrificing pigs on the altar and erecting a statue of Jupiter Olympus in the Holy Place of the temple (165 BC; 11:31-32). 8. Daniel then prophecies the victory of Judas Maccabaeus by intrigue over Antiochus IV and purified the temple in an 8 day celebration known as Hanukkah (165 BC; 11:33-35). All these prophecies came true 365 years after Daniel wrote them! The recognition of Cyrus the Great of Persia one-hundred years before he was born Isaiah named the pagan king who would conquer Babylon and allow the Jews to return to their homeland 100 years before he was born (Isaiah 44:2, 28; 45:1-4). The return of the Jews to Israel Moses warned of a worldwide dispersion if they did not honor their covenant with God (Deuteronomy 28:64; Leviticus 26:33); they would be persecuted once scattered (Deuteronomy 28:65); their land would become desolate and their cities waste (Deuteronomy 29:22-23); God would preserve them in the world wide wanderings (Isaiah 66:22; Jeremiah 30:11; 31:35-37). God said He would set His hand again a second time and recover a remnant from the four corners of the earth and assemble them in their land and set up a banner (flag) for the nations that will display a root of Jesse (Star of David; Isaiah 11:10-12); that second time was May 14, 1948. Following WW II and the Holocaust the Jews were motivated to return; by the end of the War Jewish population in Israel ballooned to 600,000. Scripture prophesied the greatest influx of Jews would come from the north and the south, though in all directions (Isaiah 43:4-6); the world s largest Jewish population was in Russia, directly north of Israel; after the collapse of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev opened the door for the Jews to return; they abandoned all valuables and arrived at average of 16,600 per month; they came because God placed in their heart the highways to Zion (Psalm 84:5). The largest Jewish population from the South came from Ethiopia; their origin from a relationship between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (2 Chronicles 9); in the late 1980s Jews began to feel the tug to go to Israel; they camped out by the 4

thousands at the international airport at Addis Ababa; the government refused to let them leave. When the Ethiopian government began to crumble in the midst of a civil war; the US and Israel intervened and in a 48 hour window of time 14,500 Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Tel Aviv in 40 flights involving 35 aircraft; one EI Al Boeing 747 designed to carry 350 passengers was loaded with 1,086 passengers; all seats were removed and no luggage; two babies were born on the flight (Jeremiah 31:8). Today over 6 million Jews have been gathered back to their land and they are still coming. The Confirmation of the True Messiah The OT contains more than 300 prophecies concerning the first coming of Christ 108 distinct prophecies as the others are duplicated and all were fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth. His entire lineage is prophesied: from the descendents of Abraham (Genesis 12:3); heritage of Isaac (Genesis 17:21); children of Jacob (Genesis 28:14); tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:8); family of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1); house of David (Jeremiah 23:5). His birth: born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2); born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14); come out of Egypt (Hosea 11:1). His last week of life: His triumphal entry (Zechariah 9:8); betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:13); His crucifixion (Psalm 22:16); Isaiah described the Passion Week: His brutal treatment before Roman soldiers, His silence before Pilate, His death and burial in a rich man s tomb, the dividing of his garments, His resurrection from the grave (Isaiah 53:3-12). Peter Stoner, in Science Speaks takes 8 prophecies of the Messiah to be fulfilled by one man; the odds are 1 in 10 17 ; that is one chance in a hundred quadrillion! A prophecy yet to be fulfilled: Surely, I am coming quickly (Revelation 22:20) Amen. Come Lord Jesus! 5
