Church Planting Residency Program Course Syllabus: Year Two September 2017 May 2018

Program Overview Year 2 of the Church Planting Residency program will give a continued emphasis on disciple making while developing a vision and strategy for a multiplying church. Residents will continue working through key field experiences, further develop communication skills, deepen theological framework, and gain even more practical experience in launching and leading Discovery Bible Studies. This syllabus will be the tool used to guide the second year of the program. It includes all of the information necessary for successful completion of the program including requirements, expectations, and assignments. On-going evaluations of each candidate, including his personal progress and the wellbeing of his/her family, will continue to be an important part of the program. The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare each resident to help launch a new church plant within the Family Church network. Our hope and prayer for you continues to be that the process of planting a church will be a positive and rewarding experience for your entire family. 2

Robby and his wife, Joanna, have three children. Mark Warnock, Ph.D, Residency Instructor, Family Church, West Palm Beach Mark is a native of Florida, who also spent 17 years of ministry in Illinois. He joined the Family Church staff in 2014 as our Administrative Worship Pastor. Mark earned his Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. 3

Program Base Requirements Bible Study & Worship Service It is expected that residents will continue to maintain church membership at Family Church (FC) and be active in attendance at their assigned campus. It is further expected that all residents will be actively working toward launching a new Group which will be focused on training and multiplying disciples using the 3/3s method. Attendance It is expected that residents will attend all sessions in order to complete the program. Although absences may be unavoidable at times, these occurrences should be rare. It is expected that residents will provide prior notification when an absence will be necessary. Individual make-up sessions may be available on a case by case basis. Please note that active participation continues to be a critical factor in success and excessive absences may result in termination from the program. Required Attendance: Weekly training meetings (will change to every other week later in the year) Once a semester meet with campus pastor//leader Y2 Residents will all meet together with Y1 Residents at least once Character Statement As part of the leadership team at FC, all residents will be required to understand and comply with the Staff Ten Commandments. This document has been created to assist in protecting the reputation and integrity of our leadership. As spokesmen of the church and as representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ, it is imperative that all participants adhere to a policy of strict moral conduct. (See Appendix A) Ordination Residents who meet the requirements will have the opportunity to pursue ordination with the following guidelines: 1. All Residents will be tracking toward serving as a pastor within our Family Church Network, and should take the initiative to pursue a role that fits their gifts and calling. Those Residents who are functioning in a pastoral role at the close of Y2 will be ordained at that time. Residency graduates can be ordained at a later time once they are functioning as a pastor. 2. Residents will appear before our church ordination council for confirmation. The council will review his testimony and calling and affirm the following three things are in order: Doctrine and Theology, Ministry Practice and Personal and Family Life. 4

Program Components 1. 3/3 Groups and Disciple Maker Training Part of Y2 will focus on launching and leading a Group (Discovery Bible Study or 3/3 Group). This will require residents to recruit and lead a group of at least 6 to 8 people who will meet weekly for a 3/3s experience (see Appendix B). The tool will provide an outline to follow, along with some resources to assist in leading the Group. Residents will also be expected to demonstrate proficiency in sharing the Gospel using the 3 Circles and be able to articulate 2 Corinthians 5:14-21, using it as a key passage to show believers their Ambassador Identity. Residents will learn to train believers using the 3/3s and 7 Commands of Christ as they train disciples to train disciples (see Appendix C). 2. Field Experience During Y2 each resident will be expected to continue with their Field Experience Passport. Involvement in these experiences is designed to get Residents sufficient practice in disciple making skills, and to prepare residents for a variety of future ministry responsibilities. These ministry experiences will be tracked by your Field Experience Passport. (See Appendix E for a full list) You will meet with a campus pastor once a month to debrief your field experiences, plan for future experiences, and to have an opportunity to get to know and learn from some of our key leaders. Campus Downtown Gardens Jupiter Iglesia Familiar GA Sherbrooke West Iglesia Familiar DT Farms Village Boca Portuguese Campus Pastor/Leader Derek Simpson/Bev Bonner Aaron Filippone Steve Scalici Jose Dasilva Jimmy Muir Tim Akin David Ramos Chris Bonts Eric Kelly Sal Cavarretta Wadson Vasconcelos 3. Formal Education The training curriculum for Y2 will primarily consist of Field Experience but we will still read a book a month and report our findings in a variety of ways (See list of assignments on p. 7) Each book must be read in its entirety (unless otherwise noted), though the entire book may not be discussed. 5

Formal Education Assignments Scripture Memory As part of this program memorizing specific biblical passages will be required from Colossians 4, Philippians 4, Hebrews 12, and Psalm 1. (See Appendix D) A new passage is assigned each month and residents are expected to commit to memory these passages as assigned. Be prepared to quote the passage word for word on the last meeting of the month. Writing Requirements The writing assignments vary based on the book. Examples: o Write a 2-3 page paper on how the key ideas in the book will be implemented in your church planting/disciple making efforts. o Lead a 10 minute discussion on an assigned chapter from the book. The point of these assignments is to change your pattern of thinking the ultimate goal of each book and assignment is to get you to apply principles that will lead us to see a movement of multiplying Gospel churches in South Florida. Residents pursuing graduate degree credits Residents will be asked to listen to 12 hours of PhD level instruction and write a summary of the material. Assignments will be provided in September. Leading Discussions Communication is a key skill required for any leader to move those following him in a strategic direction. One of the key ways a church planter communicates is through leading discussions. So, some of your assignments will be to lead the group in a discussion. Here are a few guidelines for these assignments: Know where you are taking us what is it exactly that you are wanting to communicate? o What parts of the chapter/section of the book really stood out to you? o What key words, phrases, sentences, principles do you want us to get? o How would you communicate those things in a concise way? Know how you will get us there how will you get your audience to arrive at the conclusions you have come to? o What questions can you ask? o How will you shape these questions to lead us to the right answers? o Are the questions answerable? (see if you can answer them easily) o Only use yes/no questions to set up another question. o Don t ask super easy questions people will not answer, will think it s a trick questions. Don t answer your own questions. Be silent. The silence will break. Rephrase it if needed. Stop talking. Sh. Quiet. Stop talking. Talk less. Question more. Don t be scared to let your enthusiasm come through as you are leading the discussion. 6

Program Logistics Year Two Timetable The second year of the program runs from September 2017 through May 2018. All residents will be clear on their role in church planting by the end of Y2, likely before then. Our priority is to send Residents out in teams to plant Seed Churches. If a Resident will not be on a Seed Church team and is not currently serving a specific pastoral role at an existing campus, the Resident may be asked to join our most recent strategic partnership and implement the training received to accelerate disciple making on that new campus. Session Locations TBD. Contact Information We are here not only to help equip you for planting a church, but to serve as a resource and an encouragement for you and your family during this season of life. If there is ever a time where we can serve you or be of assistance, please don t hesitate to contact one of us.
