The meaning of Tu B Shvat Tu B Shvat is a special date in the calendar which has very much grown in importance in recent decades. It s quite possible, if you re older, that you may not recall hearing of it when you were young. It means the fifteenth of Shvat. The Hebrew letters spelling Tu mean the number 15, and Shvat is the name of a winter month in the Jewish calendar. Tu B Shvat always falls in January/February and signifies the very beginning of the growing season not in Britain, maybe, but in the Middle East. It s not strictly speaking a proper festival, and there are no special Tu B Shvat services or liturgical practices, but it slowly gained ground as a special date marking the New Year of the Trees. Medieval Jewish mystics of the Kabbalah tradition invented a formal meal a seder featuring various symbols of nature and plantlife (such as fruits and nuts) chosen to mark Tu B Shvat. After a long period of being more or less unknown in Judaism, the Tu B Shvat seder was given new life in the 20 th century, influenced first by the development of agriculture in the land of Israel, and more recently by the growth of the global environmentalist movement.
