ROOSTER TALES JUL 2015 The Monthly Newsletter of the Pioneer Country Emmaus Community Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Luke 24:35 (NRSV) Who wants hamburgers and hotdogs? The Pioneer Country Emmaus and Pioneer Country Chrysalis Communities will meet on Saturday, July 18th, for the July Gathering at UM Church of the Good Shepherd in Yukon. Church of the Good Shepherd is located at 10928 SW 15th Street in Yukon. The easiest way to get there is to take the Kilpatrick Turnpike south until it dead ends at SW 15th Street, turn right, and then look for Good Shepherd on your left. You can also take I-40 to either Morgan Road (exit #140) or Mustang Road (exit #138), go south to SW 15th Street, and then 1 1/2 miles west from Morgan Road or 1/2 mile east from Mustang Road, and Church of the Good Shepherd will be on the south side of the road. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served at 5:30 PM, with Praise & Worship following at 7:00 PM. The Community is asked to bring chips or drinks, or anything else that might go with hamburgers and hotdogs. Childcare will be available but will not be provided if there are no reservations. Please RSVP with Debbie Rowland at 681-2135 or 802-8113 if you will be needing childcare. Board Elections coming in October Are you interested in serving on the Pioneer Country Emmaus Board of Directors? Whether you have been involved with Emmaus for many years, or if you are fresh off of one of the most recent Walks, you should consider running for the Board! Board Elections will take place in October, so fill out a Board Questionnaire and get it to one of the current board members or mail it to the Post Office Box by Sunday, September 20th so that we can get your name on the ballot. There is a Board Questionnaire attached to the back of this newsletter that you can print and fill out, and we will also have copies available at the July Gathering next Saturday. w w w. p i o n e e r c o u n t r y e m m a u s. c o m

BEHIND THE SCENES VOLUNTEERS We need your help!! On the last few sets of Walks, we have seen a large downturn in behindthe-scenes help. It makes me wonder if our Community, as a whole, is aware of what really goes on behind the scenes. It s not just serving plates and participating in the kitchen band. Here are some facts you might not know. At set-up on the Wednesday before each Walk, we unload the trailer at the Church. We then remove most items from the sleeping rooms and place about 75 mattresses and 75 chairs beside each mattress. All Kitchen, Dining Room, Snack and Agape items are placed in their assigned areas. Some windows are papered over, the Conference Room is prepared with six round tables and eight chairs at each table. Then long tables are placed for the Table of Servants, the speaker s podium is set up in a way that all Pilgrims can see the speaker and the projection screen. The projector and microphones are connected, turned on and tested. The Prayer Room is arranged to accommodate the speakers and their guests. During the weekend, the Kitchen Managers are responsible for preparing eight sit-down meals for approximately 75 people per meal. That is 600 plates served during the weekend. As in all we do on the weekend, everything follows a schedule. If one area gets behind, it normally affects all other areas. The Dining Room & Agape Managers get the dining room ready to serve those 600 plates. They set the tables with table clothes, cups, glasses of water and/or tea, glasses of orange juice, napkins, utensils, condiments, decorations and Agape. The Snack Room Managers prepare snacks for Send-Off on Thursday evening, Team Meetings Thursday and Friday night, Gathering before Candlelight on Saturday night and the Conference Room breaks which occur several times each day. Each day, the Team Assistants keep the Conference Room, sleeping rooms and restrooms neat and clean. They set up for special events, ensure adequate lighting and often work the sound system. They absolutely work from can to can t! The Agape Room Manager, in addition to placing Agape on the dining tables, sorts all the notes and letters for the Pilgrims and team members, prepares the Pilgrim Packets for Sunday afternoon and performs various and sundry other tasks all weekend. The Prayer Room prays for each speaker before, during and after each talk. In addition, they pray for everything Emmaus and other requests all weekend. Then comes Sunday morning tear-down of all the sleeping rooms, putting everything back in order for Sunday School. That means all those mattresses have to go either to the trailer or storage room, floors and hallways vacuumed and furniture returned to their proper place in each classroom. (continued on next page)

(continued from page #2) Sunday afternoon, the Conference Room is returned to how it was before set up, and everything is either loaded onto the trailer or stored at the Church, depending upon where the Walks are being held. All kitchen and dining room floors are swept and mopped, and we've accomplished our goal of leaving the building at least as good as when we moved in. Times for all of the above will be provided as the time for the Walks draw near Now, it's 4:00 pm and time to go to Closing to hear each of our new Pilgrims answer those special questions: (1) What has this weekend meant to me? and (2) What am I going to do about it? What a blessing it is to hear these testimonies! A perfect ending to a long and exhausting weekend! Now that you know what happens on a walk weekend, you can see why we need your help on Walks!!! Blessings & De Colores, Judie Ellis, Community Lay Director Emmaus and Chrysalis have a new look! The Upper Room will be introducing two new programs to complement the Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis. This year, they will be launching Face to Face, a program for adults who are 60 and older, and in 2016 they will be starting a new program called Journey to the Table for young adults who are 18-35. As a part of developing logos for the new programs, Upper Room has re-designed the Emmaus and Chrysalis logos to match. The old logos will be phased out by January 1, 2016, and will be replaced by the new logos on all printed material and webpages. Look for more information about the new programs in future editions of Rooster Tales.

Update on Belize / Honduras Emmaus: Rev. Max Rudd reports that the Team Selection Committee was able to meet as scheduled, and they have filled the Conference Room Team for the Women s Walk. The Committee decided to work on the Men s Walk at a later date. So far, everyone from each of the Communities who submitted applications has been invited to serve on Walk #1. Max says that there are still needs for additional applicants, especially musicians, so you are encouraged to go ahead and submit an application, and you might be asked to participate! We will be including the applications in this edition of Rooster Tales in case you are interested in serving, but be sure to get your application submitted soon! The Team Selection committee was composed of two (2) people from Upper Room, a Lay representative from Belize, a man from Lexington, KY, Rev. Jamie Williams, and Rev. Max Rudd, representing Pioneer Country Emmaus. The Walks are capped at 20 Pilgrims, and there will be 4 tables. The first set of Walks will be approximately 75% United States and 25% Belizeans. A few Belizeans have been able to serve behind the scenes on Walks that were held in the states, and we hope that a few more will have an opportunity to do so prior to June 2016. Since the Belize / Honduras Walks will be held in a resort setting, there will be no kitchen prep team. The resort will be preparing and servicing all of the food. The team will only be in charge of decorating and agape. The dates for the Belize / Honduras Walks are as follows: June 9-11, 2016 June 11-14, 2016 June 15-18, 2016 June 19, 2016 Arrival and team building Men s Walk Women s Walk Team departure Be sure to contact Rev. Max Rudd at mrudd6753@aol.com with any questions that you might have. De Colores! David Smith, Assistant Community Lay Director
