Celebrating the Life of Theodore R. Downing, Jr. Sunrise August 24, 1927 Sunset October 7, 2015 Friday, October 16, 2015-11:00 a.m. CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH 575 East 18 th Street Paterson, New Jersey Rev. Randall Lassiter, Pastor

Reflections of Life Theodore R. Downing, Jr. affectionately known as Ted, was born on August 24, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Theodore R. Downing, Sr. and Pocahontas M. (Ward) Downing. Theodore received his education in Philadelphia, PA and later joined the U.S. Navy. After being discharged from the Navy he moved to Paterson, NJ where he was employed for American Paterson Glass Company as a truck driver. He later moved on to work for Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) as a truck driver for thirty years. He retired in 1998. Ted and Ada met and were married on June 22, 1963. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger; he was friendly and a fun loving guy. He always spoke his mind and would tell it like it was. Ted was a sharp dresser and never went out without one of his signature hats. He loved his family and attended every family reunion until his health no longer allowed him to travel. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church Paterson where he participated in the Calvary Baptist Couples Club, and acted in plays written by Mrs. Dorothy C. Rowe. He was an active member of the Falls City American Legion Post #268 for over forty years. He served as the Post Commander, and the Service Officer. He was a life member of the Paterson Branch of the NAACP and served as the Chair of the Veteran s Affairs Committee. He was also a Cub Scouts Leader for fifteen years. Theodore was predeceased by a daughter, Lenore Wright, his parents and his brothers, Stanley Downing and Alvin Downing. On Wednesday, October 7, 2015, Theodore R. Downing, Jr., was called home to eternal peace.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Ada; six children, Joyce Dockens of Philadelphia, PA, Geraldine Jordan of Philadelphia, PA, Sharon Oakes of Philadelphia, PA, Steven Downing of Paterson, NJ, Karen Staley of Randallstown, MD (John) and Aaron (Abu Hurairah) Downing (Asiya) of Saudi, Arabia; five sisters, Selma Price of Philadelphia, PA, Alethia Taylor of Philadelphia, PA, Alice Wilson (Ernest) of Coplay, PA, Reba Johnson (William) of Philadelphia, PA and Carol Cirwithen of Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law, Calvin Ward of St. Louis, MO; twenty-six grandchildren; a myriad of greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, god-daughter, Angela Geralds; special family, John and Deborah Geralds of Teaneck, NJ, Leonard Lovely of Paterson, NJ, Samuel and Shirley McDonald of Paterson, NJ, Andrea Randion of Paterson, NJ, Raymond and Willa Taylor of Mechanicsville, VA; and the members of the Paterson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. As I sit in heaven and watch you everyday, I try to let you know with signs I never went away. I hear you when you re laughing, and watch you as you sleep. I even place my arms around you to calm you as you weep. I see you wish the days away, begging to have me home. So I try to send you signs so you know you are not alone. Don t feel guilty that you have life that was denied to me. Heaven is truly beautiful, just you wait and see. So live your life, laugh again, enjoy yourself, be free. Then I know with every breath you take You ll be taking one for me.

Look For Me In Rainbows Time for me to go now, I won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise when all the world is new, Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you. Time for me to leave you, I won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky. In the evening sunset, when all the world is through, Just look for me and love me, and I'll be close to you. It won't be forever, the day will come and then My loving arms will hold you, when we meet again. Time for us to part now, we won't say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky. Every waking moment, and all your whole life through Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you. Just wish me to be near you, And I'll be there with you. Conn Bernard (1990) Vicki Brown Acknowledgement We the family of Theodore R. Downing, Jr. would like to thank everyone for the words of comfort, prayer, cards, food, and calls during our time of sorrow. It has been of great reassurance and comfort to know that you too shared and cared. May God continue to richly bless each of you.
