March 28, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO The Archdiocese of San Francisco announces that Pope Francis has today appointed Fr. Robert Christian, O.P., as auxiliary bishop. Fr. Christian is a Friar of the Western Dominican Province and currently serves as Master of Students of the province. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said, I am overjoyed to welcome Fr. Christian back to his native San Francisco. We first met while studying in Rome some forty years ago and we are now all blessed that Bishop-Elect Christian joins us to serve our priests, religious, deacons and all the people of the Archdiocese. Robert Francis Christian was born in San Francisco in 1948 to Robert Francis and Gloria Jean Christian. He was raised in St. Brendan Parish and attended St. Brendan and St. Vincent de Paul grammar schools. In 1966 he graduated from St. Ignatius High School and from Santa Clara University in 1970. That year he entered the Dominican Novitiate in Oakland. Fr. Christian was ordained in 1976 at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Oakland and started his teaching career immediately thereafter at Dominican College. After later receiving his doctorate in theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in Rome he began a long teaching career there as professor of theology. He is presently a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity and a member of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission. Bishop-Elect Christian said I am delighted to minister in the area where I was born and raised, and where I have numerous relatives and friends. I know I can count on the prayers of many people, and I am eager to serve the people of the City and Archdiocese that I call home. His episcopal ordination is planned to take place at St. Mary s Cathedral by the beginning of summer. 2

Summer Priestly Discernment Camp for Teens Sunday, July 8 Wednesday, July 11 A camp for young Catholic men of the Bay Area to deepen their faith, learn more about all vocations, and better discern God s call in their lives. Open to rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and to 2018 graduates. Information and registration Eloquent Publishing would like to give your parish Faith Time for free for six months (March-August 2018)! Faith Time is a newsletter in the form of a digital resource that can be used in your Faith Formation programs it can be forwarded to parents or printed as handouts. It is already reaching thousands of families in Catholic parishes nationwide! This Easter Season brings lots of opportunities for us to be Missionary Disciples. Pope Francis urges us to welcome those who come to us. With First Communions, Confirmations, Baptisms, weddings and other gatherings we engage with so many people who are not Catholic or fallen away from the Church. Our role is to have a welcoming spirit, materials with information on our parish and what we do and invite them to join us. Faith Time covers interesting topics that include Catholic questions, meditations, global church highlights, saints of the month and Catholic social teaching in action. To preview of a copy of Faith Time, please visit: eloquentpublishing.com or email Alyssa Soucek at alyssa.soucek@eloquentpublishing.com to receive a free trial of Faith Time for March-August 2018 via email. In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (Mt 28:19). All the baptized, whatever their position in tle Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization, and it would be insufficient to envisage a plan of evangelization to be carried out by professionals while the rest of the faithful would simply be passive recipients. The new evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized. Please help one of our own catechists. My name is Laurrie Digneo. I am 58 years old and in need of a kidney. I have been a Faith Formation instructor for over 32 years and presently teaching at St.Elizabeth Church in San Francisco. If you are willing and able to donate a kidney for me I will be forever grateful. My blood type is A positive. Please contact Sister Celeste at the Archdiocese of San Francisco if you can help me. Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. So teach your students and families how to invite, engage in the stories of Catholic Faith life and witness to Jesus Christ Risen today. Easter Blessings come because we have been signed with the cross of Jesus our Savior and washed in the waters of Baptism. We share at the table of the Lord. The Holy Spirit calls us forth to show God s love and mercy. Easter is our time of proclamation. 5

Chinese Catechesis Class CCC For 5 months, a group of Chinese Catholics got together once a month for half a day at the Pastoral Center to study more about Jesus Christ. These people came from different parishes in the Archdiocese. The class was offered by Faith Formation Department of the SF Archdiocese in November 2017 and was the continuation of the first class called The Chinese Catechesis Class (CCC). This first CCC lasted for 8 months, from October 2016 to May 2017. The subjects covered in the first CCC were those from the basic California Catechist Certification course. Not of the 58 people who registered in this class intended to become catechists, but all of them came to the class with the hope to refresh their knowledge or to deepen their understanding on our faith. When they finished this class, the majority of them wanted to continue, and hence the second class. The title of the 2nd class was Who is Jesus? Throughout the course of these 5 months, the class explored the deeper meaning of Jesus different title: Son of God, Son of Man, I AM, and The Messiah. And it concluded with presentations from different groups within the class on Who is Jesus to me? Here are some pictures from the class 9

Ten parishes throughout the archdiocese participated in our Mission Dolores Retreat. 147 candidates for Confirmation joined with their leaders and the Archdiocesan Youth Confirmation Team for the day. 10

Assessing Latinamente the Preparation of Latin@s for Lay Ecclesial Ministry Download a Spanish version Executive summary What: Research study survey of Latino/as trained (or currently in formation ministrypastoral o theological programs) for any ministry in the US Catholic Church. Who is invited to answer the survey: any US-born or foreign-born Latino/s Hispanic presently doing or preparing for any ministry in the Catholic Church. Why: 1. Current figures indicate that the majority of Catholics in the United States will be Hispanic-Latino/as. 2. There is no Latino-specific data collected so far on the lived experiences of Latino/as in ministry in the US 3. Formation programs can benefit from input collected. This study will contribute to the ongoing conversation on lay ecclesial ministry in the United States, by focusing on the under-explored perspectives of Latino/a lay ecclesial ministers. The data may serve to inform the content and process of formation programs for the training and preparation of Latino/as for ministry, especially with Latino/a communities. A study like this will contribute to the conversation on a population that will give rise to new LEMs, their preparation, and participation in the professionalization necessary in the US Catholic Church. The input collected is the key to having meaningful and relevant results. The overall goal is to foster greater understanding of the realities of Hispanic Latino/a lay ministers and to contribute to the ongoing conversation on lay ecclesial ministry in the United States in light of the V Encuentro Process.
