February 2018 February puts us into Lent in which we practice prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This is a gifted time for each of us to center ourselves on what is right. Daily we are called to do a little more to build our storehouse of virtues. I think that we often forget we are sinners. I was reading something from St. Therese yesterday who said we must look at ourselves and our defects and not at the other persons. We can only change ourselves and no one else. How hard this is. Eileen Kennedy-Moore & Christine McLaughlin in the book Growing Friendships: A Kids Guide to Making and Keeping Friends offers some insights of when it is time to let go of resentment and to forgive someone. I found the points helpful to me too and want to share them. 1. If it only happened one time, and it probably won t happen again, let it go. others, sometimes for such horrible things that have happened that bring tears to our eyes. During Lent I pray that I can build the strength to forgive in the same way. If we start with the small things then the others will not tear us apart. 2. If your friend didn t do it on purpose, let it go. 3. If it wasn t that bad, let it go. 4. If your friend is really sorry, let it go. 5. If it was just a mistake, and the friend is usually kind, let it go. 6. If it happened more than a month ago, definitely let it go. Holding onto resentment is emotionally costly. Forgiveness is the right thing to do because God asks us to forgive. We deserve not be weighted down with bitterness. Life is not easy. We have all heard that life is not fair. Well, life hurts us sometimes too. People hurt us and on the other side we hurt others. The love and pain that come to us help us to learn lessons about how to live and be in this world, with our families and with our friends. This is not about condoning evil but embracing that God is more powerful. We see stories all the time regarding people forgiving National Conference of Catechetical Lead. 2 Virtus update 2 Catechizing Today s Adolescents 3 Respect Life Essay Contest 3 RCIA Team Workshop Triduum flier 4 NCEA ACRE Review Meeting 5 Chinese New Year Liturgy & Dinner 6 Liturgy of Word for Children flier 7 RCIA Adapted for Children flier 8 Youth Confirmation Retreats 9 Adult Confirmation Prep Classes 10-11 Cursos de Formación en la Fe 12 Quinceañera Preparación 13-14 Nuestro Retiro 15 Calendar 16-17 1

To increase the professional growth of all of our Parish Catechetical Leaders the office has been able to purchase membership for everyone with the National Conference of Catechetical Leadership. This is the only professional catechetical organization and offers consistent updates and resources in the field. You will be receiving the newsletter online every week as well as a discount on the national meeting, adult faith formation resources and many more. This is an opportunity for you to grow more in your ministry. As soon as everything goes though you will be asked to go online and register. It should happen in the very near future. Virtusonline.org Many have been asking what are the requirements for our safe environment program as we change from Law Room to Virtus. The process is taking time and we ask that you be patience. We are in the first phase meaning that parish administrators have been trained on the record keeping section. Another part of this step is to asked to have all of your catechists and helpers fingerprinted. The cost varies from place to place. Some UPS stores and other places are offering it for $35.00 and some places for as much as $75. It is the parish decision to pay for the cost or have the individual pay. The administrators in the parish have forms and you can find it listed on sfarch.org/ooff site. The fingerprinting must be for the Archdiocese of SF. Even if someone has been fingerprinted for another program, if it is not with the archdiocese it cannot count. The next phase will be working with the children and youth. No decision has been made at this point. I think that within the next few months we will be getting information on what to do in this area. You can go on the Virtus website and get some more information about the program offered. Remember if there are questions you can call Karen Guglielmoni at 415-614-5578 or the Office of Faith Formation 415-614-5650 for help. 2

NCEA-ACRE Assessment We have just finished putting together the results of the NCEA-ACRE Assessment of our Confirmation Candidates the past year. This assessment is very important in building the program curriculum so that candidates know their faith and live it well. Each parish program is asked to do this assessment within the first year. Remember that Confirmation Preparation is two years. I have been impressed with our students work. The Office will be doing a review of all who did the assessment and what it says on how we develop our programs. Now we have two years worth of information. If you want a copy of what has been put together for parish program director/coordinator you can contact Sister Celeste for a copy at arbucklec@sfarch.org or 415-614- 5652. On February 22 the Office will present an overview of the results of our candidates NCEA-ACRE for both years, the insights into program faith formation needs and ideas for improvements. We will welcome others insights for programming as we develop a solid base for our candidates. Join us on February 22 at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center from 10:00-12:00 or 6:30-8:30 PM. RSVP is required since we will be sending out the results by email to participants before the event.
