From The Pastor A Moral Choice for Paris? In an article for Commonweal, June 2, 2017, entitled: Climate of Folly: Why Are Catholic Politicians Backing Trump on Paris, Anthony Annett covered a conference on Laudato si which took place at the Vatican in September last year. In it he quotes Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon, Myanmar, as follows: Unless rich countries agree to reduce the global warming, more people will die. This to me is a criminal genocide, when the poor and the weak are exposed [to] violent nature created by unrestricted use of fossil fuels by rich countries. This may be of special interest to us because our own Bishop McElroy will very soon be hosting Cardinal Bo who will visit the diocese. Annett says that in the United States, climate change is often seen as a niche concern of the elites. Environmental activists are mocked for their apocalyptic tone. But Cardinal Bo is not an American, an elitist, or an environmental activist. He is a bishop who lives the values of the Gospel, and who sees on a daily basis what the environmental crisis is doing to his people. This is how churchmen from the developing world talk. But Americans are sheltered from this reality. They do not see the effects of climate change on the lives of the world s poorest people not in the distant future, but right now. Arnett goes on to say that by using a word like genocide, Cardinal Bo is signaling that this is about as morally serious as it gets. By this reckoning, undermining the Paris Agreement is signing the death warrants of untold numbers of people, the vast majority of them poor. Some of these people are alive today; some have yet to be born. But make no mistake: if you support Trump on this, you are formally cooperating with evil. Arnett finds the reaction of some high-profile American Catholics, like Paul Ryan, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum quite shameful in that they have come out in support of Trump s decision because, by doing so, they are explicitly repudiating the encyclical Laudato si, whose publication was timed to influence the negotiations that led to the Paris Agreement. He then goes on to say, If you repudiate Paris, you repudiate Francis. You also turn your back on the rest of the world and on the scientific consensus. And he sums up with: If you support Trump on leaving the Paris accord, you are formally cooperating with evil. Arnett s language is much stronger than the USCCB s who called the withdrawal deeply troubling. But, he says that strong words are also used by some Vatican officials: Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, chancellor of the pontifical academies, called Trump s decision a disaster, a great evil, and a slap in the face. Arnett feels that the U.S. bishops should listen more to what their counterparts in the developing world have to say about this issue, and to speak more like them. They need to appreciate that climate change is a major prolife issue, and must be treated as such. They need to appreciate that, because the United States has an enormous carbon footprint, it bears much of the blame for the current state of affairs, and therefore much of the responsibility for leading global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Arnett offers more strong words about Americans beliefs: too many Americans have bought into a ruinous ideology that disdains responsibility for global problems. Too many believe that as Americans they have the right to treat the bounty of nature however they see fit. At the same time, too many American politicians have been bought for thirty pieces of Koch-stamped silver. Finally, Arnett calls Trump s decision to withdraw from Paris a moral catastrophe. He says that if there is any benefit from this, it is that it has become even clearer than before that we face a stark choice between the values of Pope Francis and those of Donald Trump. He calls on the church s leadership to admonish Catholic politicians and institutions providing cover for such recklessness even if this means losing some financial contributions. What do you think of our withdrawal from the Paris Accord? Is it cooperating with evil? Home Masses We have begun Home Masses. Pleased contact the office if you wish to host a Mass. Our financial year ends next week. Over the course of this year our monthly expenses have been a lot higher than our income. Just to give you an idea, our music, our utilities and the cleaning of the hall each cost us over $2,000 per month. But over May and June, since the diocese has stepped in to cover the school shortfalls which BSP was formerly covering, our bank balance has risen from $5,400 to $5,800 better than a deficit, but less than stable and not very good for our 764 families. On average, we receive $5,150 in envelopes and basket each Sunday which averages out to $6.74 per family the price of a Whopper meal or downtown parking for an hour. Really! What a blessing it would be if we fed the basket two whoppers next year! FINANCIAL UPDATE 2017 June 18 weekend $5,141.50 Thank you for your continued support. Quarters & Cans Collection Next weekend is our monthly Quarters & Cans Collection. All quarters, designated monies and all Non-Perishable Food Items will be given to Catholic Charities College Area Center. What they receive is used immediately. The Center serves over 600 families each month, 35% are children. Each week 325 families come to the doors because they do not have enough food. Your donation makes sure they can serve everyone with food, hygiene products, and support. The Center gives education about food resources, emergency food, food stamp application & recertification assistance and advocacy services. Thank you for your heartfelt support! Sat. Sun. Mon. Catolicos de Convercion On Saturday June 3 rd Pope Francis stood arms outstretched and hands raised in Rome s Circus Maximus along with 60,000 charismatic worshippers who were dancing, singing and speaking in tongues. This meeting of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal took place to mark the 50 th anniversary of its founding and the coming of age for a group that for 40 years has been on the fringes of Catholic life. The presence of the pope also marked it as a major institutional affirmation from the movement. BSP also had its own semi-charismatic celebration this past week (Friday June 16 th ) in the parish hall where a whopping 170 Latino men, women and children gathered to dance, sing and praise the Lord. Even Fr. Jon had his arms outstretched praising the Lord. Ghanaians say, A forest in which you can get lost is no small forest! It was both exhilarating and inspiring. It demonstrated a tremendous Christian spirit among the Latino members of our BSP community and it was a great fundraiser for the church. The group calls itself Catolicos de Convercion and it was organized by Orlando Lopez and his family. We wish to thank them for helping us to embrace our multicultural identity. Events like this go deeper than simply preferred liturgical styles. They are key to understanding Francis papacy and his openness to the spirit. The Pope wants a Spirit-filled Church ready to follow a bold, daring path, without rigidity, unencumbered by old ways of doing things.
