Last Supper Preschool Lesson, p2 Let s Play Follow the Leader! Have you ever played the game called Follow the Leader? One person is the leader. The leader sets the example, and everyone else follows. They copy what the leader is doing. Would you like to try it? C mon! It ll be fun! I ll show you. I ll be the leader. (Have children follow you around the room, copying your different actions (jump, skip, reach, etc). Excellent! You all did great! In the true Bible story I m going to tell you, Jesus gives his friends some examples to follow. Jesus wanted his friends to copy him, in the same way that you copied what I did. But, first let's talk about Jesus and his disciples! Let s Meet Jesus and his Disciples! Does anyone know what a disciple is? (Let children answer). Yes, Jesus disciples were his friends who followed him around as he taught the people. They loved Jesus and wanted to be just like him, so they listened closely to his wise words. They knew Jesus loved people better than anyone else! And they saw Jesus do many miracles! They saw him make sick people all better. They saw him turn water into wine. And, they saw him do many other great things by God s power! They knew Jesus was sent from God! Some of the disciples even knew that Jesus is the Son of God! Do you want to meet Jesus 12 disciples? I ll introduce them to you! See if you can say their names after me. (Flip through the pages on the Disciple Accordion Craft, as you say each of their names. Give children time to repeat the name after you). Excellent! You all did a great job! After following Jesus around for three years, the disciples loved Jesus even more than at the beginning! (Hold open Disciples Accordion craft). But it was almost time for Jesus to go away, so Jesus told his disciples, The Passover is in two more days. I ll be taken away to be crucified. Being crucified means to die by being hung on a (Cross picture) cross by your hands and feet! It s no fun! It hurts a lot! But before Jesus would be taken away, he had some important things to show his disciples. Let s see what Jesus showed them. Tell Me the Story About Jesus Last Supper! It was almost time to celebrate the Passover Festival! To celebrate the Passover Jesus would be eating his very last supper with his disciples. He asked two of the disciples to go to a certain house and set everything up for the supper. What do you think they needed to do to get ready? (Let children answer). Yes, I think they probably set out the plates and cups. Maybe they put a nice tablecloth on the table. And they had to make sure there would be 13 chairs. So off they went. They got everything ready just like Jesus asked them to do. That evening all the disciples came to the house to eat the Passover Supper with Jesus. (Open Disciple Accordion craft). Let s count them to make sure everyone is here. (Ask children to count with you). That makes 12 disciples. Great! Everyone is here. Show Me an Example Jesus Gave the Disciples to Copy! (Washing Feet) Jesus would ve said a prayer to thank God for the food first. Then everyone began eating. But, during the supper, Jesus got up from the table and put a towel around his waist. He filled a tub with water. (Washing Feet picture) Then he started washing the disciples feet, one by one. Why would he do that? Well, at that time, people didn t have cars like we do now. They had to walk everywhere. And they wore sandals, so their feet got very dirty. It was the job of the servant to wash everyone's feet. But at the house where they were eating, there was no servant. So Jesus decided he would be the servant. He wanted to set an example for the disciples to copy. But Peter didn t get it. When it came his turn for Jesus to wash his feet, he said, No! You ll never wash my feet! Peter thought that he should be the one washing Jesus feet, because JESUS was the Lord! Jesus told Peter, You don t understand now, but you will. Then Peter

Last Supper Preschool Lesson, p3 Example to Copy (Washing Feet) Cont d tried to be funny and said, Then wash my hands and my head too! But Jesus patiently answered Peter. He told him that only his feet needed to be washed. So Peter settled down and let Jesus wash his feet. When Jesus was finished, he sat back down at the table to teach them. Here s what he said: (Read John 13:14-15, 17). Jesus was giving the disciples an example to follow. He was telling them that they should copy him! He was showing them how to love each other by doing kind things for each other. And Jesus told them that they ll be blessed if they do! To be blessed means that God does good things for you! Let s See Another Example Jesus Gives us to Copy! (Bread and Cup) But supper wasn t over yet. Jesus had more things to teach the disciples. (Cup and loaf. Point to bread). He took the bread and gave thanks to God. Then he broke it and gave a piece to each of the disciples. He said, Take it and eat. The bread is like my body, that s given for you! Each of the disciples ate their bread. Then he took a cup of grape juice and gave thanks for it. Then he gave it to the disciples and said, Everyone drink from the cup. (Point to cup). This is like my blood, which is poured out for you, so that sins can be forgiven. Each one sitting at the table drank from the cup of grape juice. Remember how Jesus had told his disciples that he would die on a cross soon? Jesus was teaching his disciples that when they would get together he wanted them to eat the bread to remember that he died on the cross for us (Point to cross). And when they drink the juice, to remember the blood that he lost for us. (Point to blood drops). That s why the adults have Communion during church sometimes. He was giving his followers another example to copy after he had gone back to heaven. Let s Hear What Jesus Prayed for the Disciples and For Us! Then Jesus said a wonderful prayer for the disciples. Jesus prayed and asked God to make the disciples more like him, through reading the Bible. And he prayed that God would protect them from evil. Then Jesus showed us how much he loves all of us too! He prayed for all of us who would follow him some day! Jesus prayed that we would know that God loves us, and that we would love others like God loves us! Isn t that a wonderful prayer! Let s have snack, then we ll talk more about what we learned. Circle Talk Time: Let s Talk About Ways to Love Each Other! We saw how Jesus washed the disciples feet. He did that because he loved them. It was a kind thing to do. Their feet needed to be washed. But people don t need their feet washed very often now. What other kind things can we do for each other to show them that we love them? Can you think of anything? (Let children answer. Then show the Love One Another Booklet. Flip through the pages as you talk to children about each picture): SHARING - Yes, by sharing. We can share the things we have our toys or food. What else could we share? (Let children answer). Very good. HELPING - We could show love to others by helping! What kinds of things could we help people with? (Let children answer). We could help mom or dad do jobs at home. CARING - How about caring? We could care for our little brothers and sisters. We could care for a family by giving them food or clothes that they need. We can also pray for each other, like Jesus prayed for us! SAYING KIND WORDS - How about our words? We could say kind words that help people. Things like, Thank you, or Welcome! or, Can I help you? We could also say, I love you, or I like you.

Last Supper Preschool Lesson, p4 Let s Say a Rhyme To Help Us Remember! Here s a quick way to remember these ways to love one another: Let s be like Jesus, and copy his ways. Let s be like him, all of our days: We can say kind words, and help one another, Share our things, and care for each other. Now we have some activities to help us remember to love each other like Jesus did! Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you.) Give children a chance to pray also. Let Me Pray Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much! Thank you for giving us examples you want us to follow. Thank you for showing us how to love each other. Please help us remember all that you showed us, and copy you every day. In Jesus' name we pray.

Last Supper Toddler Lesson, p2 Let s Play Follow the Leader! Have you ever played the game called Follow the Leader? One person is the leader. After following Jesus around for three years, the disciples loved Jesus even more than at the beginning! But now, it was almost time for Jesus to go away, so Jesus told his disciples, In two more days. I will be taken away to die on the cross! (Cross picture) But first, Jesus had some things he wanted to show his disciples. Let s see what he showed them. Tell Me the Story About Jesus Last Supper! It was almost time to celebrate a Festival! Jesus would be eating a special supper -- his very last supper with his disciples. He asked two of the disciples to go to a house and set the table and get everything ready for the supper. So off they went. They got everything ready just like Jesus asked them to do. Later that day, all of the disciples came to the house to eat the Last Supper with Jesus. (Open Disciple Accordion craft). Let s count the disciples to make sure everyone s here. (Ask children to count with you). That makes Jesus and his 12 disciples. Great! Everyone is here. Show Me an Example Jesus Gave the Disciples to Copy! (Washing Feet) Do you think Jesus said grace before they ate? (Let children answer). I do too. Then everyone began eating. But, during the supper, Jesus got up from the table! He wrapped a towel around his waist, and filled a tub with water. (Washing Feet picture) Then he started washing the disciples feet, one by one. Why would he do that? Well, at that time, people didn t have cars like we do now. They had to walk everywhere. And they wore sandals, so their feet got very dirty. When Jesus was all done, he sat back down at the table to teach them. Here s what he said: (Read John 13:14-15). Jesus was telling the disciples that they should copy him! He had showed them how to love each other, and be kind to each other. And he was telling them to do things like that.

Last Supper Toddler Lesson, p3 Let s See Another Example Jesus Gives us to Copy! (Bread and Cup) But supper wasn t over yet. Jesus shared a loaf of bread with the disciples (Cup and loaf picture). They each eat a piece of bread. (Point to bread). Then he shared a cup of grape juice with them. (Point to cup). They each drank from the cup. Then Jesus told them that he wanted them to eat the bread and the juice often, and to remember him when they did. That s why the adults have Communion during church sometimes. Jesus wanted his followers to copy that too. Let s Hear What Jesus Prayed for the Disciples and For Us! Then Jesus said a wonderful prayer for the disciples. Jesus prayed and asked God to make the disciples more like him. And he prayed that God would protect them. Then Jesus prayed for all of us who would follow him some day! That s right! Jesus prayed that we would know that God loves us, and that we would love each other like God loves us! Isn t that a wonderful prayer! Let s have snack, then we ll talk some more. Circle Talk Time: Let s Talk About Ways to Love Each Other! We saw how Jesus washed the disciples feet. He did that to show them that he loved them. It was a kind thing to do. Their feet needed to be washed. But people don t need their feet washed very often now. Let s talk about some other kind things we can do to show people that we love them! (Show the Love One Another Booklet. Flip through the pages and read the words as you talk to children about each picture. Give children a chance to answer after each question). SHARING - We can share things that we have. What could we share? Toys, food, books. Very good. HELPING - We could show love to others by helping them! Do you know what this boy is doing? What else could we do to help people? We could help mom or dad do jobs at home. CARING - How could we care for people? We could care for our little brothers and sisters. We could care by giving clothes or food to a family who needs them. SAYING KIND WORDS - What other kind words could we say? Thank you, Welcome!, Can I help you? Let s be like him, all of our days: We can say kind words, and help one another, Share our things, and care for each other. Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you.) Give children a chance to pray also. Let Me Pray Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much! Help children glue the Dry Erase rectangle onto the lower part of the foot. Children color foot a skin color with regular crayons. Help children form a loop with ribbon, and tape near top of page by foot (for cloth to go through). Show them how to use the Dry Erase marker on the rectangle and wipe it off with the cloth. Talk about the concepts of the lesson during craft time. Caution: Give crayon to parents to transport home in case there are younger children in the family.
