THE DIVINE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION THE FESTIVAL OF PENTECOST, MAY 15 th, 2016, 9:00 am Jesus promised that it was to our advantage that He go away and send the Holy Spirit for His Church (John 16:7). That advantage became immediately clear on PENTECOST as the Holy Spirit empowered the preaching of repentance and forgiveness, and employed the use of Holy Baptism and THE LORD'S SUPPER to build the Body of Christ, His Church (Acts 2). The Holy Spirit is still acting for our advantage, as Christ comes to us with His true Body and true Blood in The Sacrament of Holy Communion today. Because doctrinal oneness is central to the common reception of THE LORD'S SUPPER, we practice Close Communion. Penitent, believing members of sister Missouri Synod congregations are welcome to commune at this altar. Other guests desiring to commune are asked to speak with the pastor before the service. Gradual for The Day of Pentecost (read by the lector) I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. A This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse, p. 205 (Stand) Holy Gospel John 14:23 31(Responses spoken) A The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 23 Jesus answered him, If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father s who sent me. 25 These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, I am going away, and I will come to you. If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. A C This is the Gospel of the Lord. LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT SUNDAY'S (MAY 22 nd ) READINGS Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 Acts 2:14a, 22-36 John 8:48-59 The Triune God Reveals Himself in Christ Jesus The divine Word of the Father is also the holy Wisdom Who was beside Him, like a master workman,: Who was daily His delight, rejoicing before Him always (Prov. 8:30). This Word became flesh and suffered death in order to bestow life by the preaching of His Gospel to the children of man (Prov. 8:4). He honors the Father, and the Father glorifies Him by raising Him from the dead, so that all who keep His Word will never see death (John 8:56). Though Christ was crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men, God raised Him up, loosing the pangs of death (Acts 2:23, 24). As He received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33), so it is by and through the Son that God the Father pours out the Holy Spirit upon His Church.
