THE SCIENCE OF THE FLOOD Lesson 09-01 Conditions Before the Flood Genesis 6:1-4 GEN 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. (Continued) 3

Genesis 6:1-4 3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 4

5

Genesis 6:3 - Dominated By Flesh GEN 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Before the Flood, man was dominated by his flesh. 6

120 Years Before The Flood Man was to have 120 years more before the flood would come. The 120 years prophecy of Genesis 6:3 may have been given through Methuselah who died in the same year as The Flood. 7

God Is Longsuffering In his first letter, Peter says that God is longsuffering before judgment, illustrating God s patience with pre-flood mankind. 1PE 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 8

God Is Longsuffering In his second letter, Peter reinforces the truth that God does not want anyone to perish: 2PE 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 9

10

Genesis 6:4 - Nephilim GEN 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 11

Nephilim - Giants Nephilim are the children born to the Sons of God and the daughters of men. Giants = Hebrew, nephilim from the root naphal (fall, or fallen ones). [163] The Greek Septuagint translated "Nephilim" as "gegenes" which means "earth born." This is the same word used to describe the mythical "Titans," who were partly celestial and partly of terrestrial origin. [161;163] 12

Sons Of God - Fallen Angels If we accept that the Sons of God are Angels (fallen angels), then: Henry Morris suggests that fallen angels could have manipulated genes to produce these offspring (Nephilim), much like gene splicing today. [167] The daughters of Men is literally the daughters of Adam. [161] 13

UFO s Demonic Activity? [161;163] Some, such as Chuck Missler, Mark Eastman, and I.D.E. Thomas, believe that modern UFO phenomenon may be related to demonic activity. If true, these demons are reportedly interested in human and animal experimentation, especially sexual experimentation. 14

UFO s Demonic Activity? [161] Many abductees report that the messages they receive are that the aliens are our creators and that: they are trying to advance our evolution through breeding experiments, and that mankind must unify with their assistance into a system of global governance and religion in order to survive future cataclysms. Abductees are mostly not churched and usually show an interest in the paranormal. 15

UFO s Demonic Activity? [161] If demonic activity is the correct interpretation in Genesis chapter 6, then, the serpent s seed was contaminating large numbers of the human race, especially the line of Cain, Adam s firstborn, with sexual union. 16

Anakim [161] And also afterward (Genesis 6:4) may refer to nephilim of Numbers 13, also known as the sons of Anak or Anakim. NUM 13:27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. 28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. 17

Anakim [161] The word Nephilim is used in Numbers 13:32 & 33 in reference to the men of "great stature, but it means fallen ones, earthborn (septuagent), or hero, or chiefman. 18

Anakim NUM 13:32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33 And there we saw the giants [nephilim], the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. 19

Demonic Activity In Canaan This type of demonic activity could have broken out again as evidenced by the giants found in the land of Canaan during the time of Moses. DEU 2:10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; 11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims. 20

Og, King Of Bashan DEU 3:11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man. 9 cubits = 13-18-3/4 feet. (The cubit may be as small as 17.5 inches, or as large as 25 inches; usually regarded as approximately 18 inches). 21

Activity Continuing? The activity of the fallen angels may have continued even after The Flood, and this activity may be increasing in these end times. [161] Maybe this is why Noah cursed Canaan after Ham sinned? Was it a prophecy that the Canaanites would pollute themselves with demons, like before the Flood? 22

Activity Continuing? GEN 9:20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: 21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. (Continued) 23

Activity Continuing? 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. (Continued) 24

Activity Continuing? 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 25

Activity Continuing? [161] Missler and Eastman write: Angels and demons seem to be quite different creatures. The Nephilim, the unnatural offspring, are not eligible for resurrection. The bodies of the Nephilim, of course, were drowned in the Flood. What happened to their spirits? Could they be the demons of the New Testament? 26

Men Of Renown Men of Renown - The nephilim may be the source of heroes or gods of Greek and other pagan mythology. [51] Throughout Greek mythology we find that intercourse between the gods and women yielded half-god, half-man Titans, demigods, or heroes which were partly terrestrial and partly celestial. [161] 27

Men Of Renown Ancient memories would have been corrupted in pagan society, from Prometheus who risked the wrath of the gods by bringing man the secret of fire; to Pandora and her box of trouble she opened, plaguing mankind. The gods of mythology were ever bringing mankind gifts of sensual love and trouble. Were these gods memories of demonic 28 activity of the past?

29

World Conditions The condition at the time of the Flood matches perfectly with the condition of the world today. We are living in a wicked amoral society that prefers strange gods rather than the Lord of Glory. 30

World Conditions This is what Jesus said the world conditions would be at His return as seen in Matthew 24:37-39: MAT 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 31

Genesis 6:5-13 GEN 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the Earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. (Continued) 32

Genesis 6:5-13 7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (Continued) 33

Genesis 6:5-13 10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (Continued) 34

Genesis 6:5-13 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 35

Wickedness Of Man God saw that everything was good in Genesis 1:31, but now when he looked again in Genesis 6:5, every intent of the heart was only evil continually. 36

Changed Relationship God could delay no longer, for the danger was that the line of the Seed of woman would be corrupted, thus defeating God s plan. If God did not act, then mankind would be totally infected with the seed of Satan, leaving no Godly line in which the Messiah would be born. Man was responsible for his condition. Demons can only control those whose minds are rebellious or obsessed with illicit desires. 37

38

Noah Found Grace Noah found grace in this time of pervasive wickedness. We see this in Hebrews: HEB 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 39

Noah, A Sinner Saved By Grace Noah had this testimony, that he was merely a sinner saved by grace, God s grace, not Noah s. Genesis 6:8 is the first mention of grace found in the Scriptures. Its significant that we first find grace exercised when sin had reached it s climax. Noah was considered godly only when compared to the rest of the world. Noah was still a fallen man. 40

Noah Was A Type Of Christ Noah s name means comfort or rest. We see in Matthew 11:28 that Jesus gives us rest. God gave Noah work to do. Noah built an ark at God s instruction to preserve from judgment. Christ s work was to save the lost. JOH 17:4 "I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do." 41

Noah Was A Type Of Christ Noah was a carpenter fashioning salvation from God s wrath by his obedience in building the wooden ark. Jesus was a carpenter fashioning salvation from God s wrath by His obedience on the wooden cross. 42

Noah and the Ark GEN 6:10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (Continued) 43

Noah and the Ark 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 44

Noah and the Ark Then God instructs Noah to build an Ark: Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. (Continued) 45

Noah and the Ark 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. 46

47

Noah s Three Sons GEN 6:10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Shem = Appointed, Name or Renown. Some believe it means dark or the burnt one. Ham = May mean Warm or Hot. Some believe it means Black. Japheth = Enlarged. Some believe it means Fair, possibly in 48 the sense of beautiful.

Races Some believe that the possible meanings Dark, Black, and Fair refers to origins of the races divided by the color of their skin. In fact, anthropologists generally divide humans into three main categories: Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid, each itself representing different shades of the same color. We are all different shades of the same color, but we all bleed red there is only one race, the human race. [70;123] 49

50

Corrupt Earth GEN 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. Violence speaks of war pre-flood man used his technology to wage war. [117] Gen 4:22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron. 51

Corrupt Earth Human wickedness and depravity was universal. Except for Christ we are no different today. ISA 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 52

Corrupt Earth All flesh applies to the moral condition of man. Animals were involved because they were part of man s dominion and would be part of his judgment. 53

Corrupt Earth Men s wickedness was willful and voluntary. They had the Word of God from the instructions God gave in the Garden, the covering of Adam and Eve, Abel s sacrifice, Enoch s prophecy and rapture, Methuselah s name, and the witness and preaching of Noah. 54

Corrupt Earth The prophecy of Methuselah s name ( his death shall bring ), refers to the meaning of the names in Genesis chapter 5, the line of Seth. Seth was the son of Adam. Beginning with Adam the meaning of the names in Genesis 5 are as follows: 55

The Prophecy In The Genealogy Adam = Man Seth = (is) appointed Enosh = mortal Kenan = sorrow Mahalaleel = the blessed God Jared = shall come down Enoch = teaching Methuselah = his death shall bring Lamech = the despairing Noah = comfort or rest 56

The Prophecy In The Genealogy Putting it all together we see: Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow; the blessed God shall come down teaching his death shall bring, the despairing, comfort, or rest. 57

Corrupt Earth The Earth was corrupt - There may be some significance to the fact that Gen 6:11 marks the middle verse of Genesis chapters 1 to 11, that is between creation and the call of Abraham. The Earth had forgotten God, but God was still looking on the Earth. 58

Corrupt Earth HEB 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. God looks after us all. But, Richard Slyhoff had a plan to avoid the gaze of God. 59

Richard Slyhoff s Plan [168] Before Richard Slyhoff died in 1867 he had a plan. Rather than to get right with God he would be buried beneath a large leaning rock to shield himself from the devil. Once the dead rose and the Earth trembled the plan was that the rock would fall on his grave, thus hiding him from Satan, keeping him safe forever. Therefore God could not find him on judgment day and give him over to the devil. (Continued) 60

Richard Slyhoff s Plan [168] In the nearly 130 years since Slyhoff s death, however, the rock has moved some 8 to 10 feet from his grave due to the erosion of storms. If the Earth were to tremble today the rock would fall somewhere else. Alas, poor Slyhoff has no place to hide. 61

Revelation 6:15-16 We see the same plan in Revelation 6:15-16: REV 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the 62 wrath of the Lamb:

63

The Earth Destroyed GEN 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Besides all flesh, the Earth is also to be destroyed. 64

The Earth Destroyed Some scholars have suggested that the flood was to be local, however the Hebrew word eth means with. Local flood advocates are forced to mistranslate eth to mean from. (i.e. I will destroy them from the Earth. ) 65

Not A Local Flood The flood was not to be local, the whole Earth is indicated to be destroyed. 2PE 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: GEN 9:11 And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. (Continued) 66

Not A Local Flood 12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: (Continued) 67

Not A Local Flood 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. (Continued) 68

Not A Local Flood 17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. If the Flood was only local then the Rainbow Covenant has failed, since many local floods have occurred bringing destruction to mankind. 69

5 Minute Break 70

THE SCIENCE OF THE FLOOD Lesson 09-02 Noah and the Ark 71

72

Genesis 6:14-16 The Ark GEN 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. 73

Dimensions of Noah s Ark [69] 74

Dimensions of Noah s Ark [69;70;122] There were several lengths for the cubit ranging from 17.5 inches to 24 inches. Assuming, conservatively, that the cubit referenced here was the smallest, 17.5 inches, we can determine the size of the Ark as follows: The Ark would have been approximately 437 feet long by 73 feet wide by 44 feet in height. The length would have been nearly 1-1/2 football fields. 75

Capacity of Noah s Ark [69] The volumetric capacity would have been approximately 1,400,000 cubic feet. This is enough capacity to carry 522 standard railroad livestock cars. Since we know that each railroad livestock car can carry 240 sheep, therefore the Ark could have carried 125,280 sheep more than enough to carry two of 76 every kind, living or extinct.

Capacity of Noah s Ark [111;169] A recent book, 1421, The Year the Chinese Discovered America, reports evidence for a vast Chinese fleet that circumnavigated the earth during 1421-1423, mapping the Americas before Columbus voyage in 1492. It is reported that the largest Chinese ship (junk) 77 in this fleet was 480 ft in length by 180 ft wide.

Capacity of Noah s Ark [169;170] If true, this gives evidence that such large wooden ships are feasible, and that the Chinese had large ships of that size in the early 1400s while Columbus sailed aboard his small The Santa Maria flagship, the Santa Maria. 75 ft in length by 25 ft 78 wide.

Only Kinds Needed Only one male and one female of each kind need be transported, (e.g. a dog is a dog). You wouldn t need pairs of poodles, pairs of spaniels, pairs of wolves. You would only need a pair of canines. 79

Only Kinds Needed Is there any doubt that the capacity of the Ark was sufficient, even allowing that seven of clean kinds were to be carried. They could have even carried dinosaurs since there was no requirement to carry adults. They could have even carried eggs! 80

Some Kinds Would Not Survive Some kinds would not survive after the flood because of changes in atmospheric conditions, possibly due to loss of some kind of vapor canopy (if present), possible decrease in the ozone layer, or other conditions resulting in less atmospheric pressure, less oxygen, and less luxuriant vegetation available for food. 81

Gopherwood Gopherwood - Some believe gopherwood to be cypress. [87] The gate of St. Peters in Rome was made of Cypress and lasted 1000 years without deterioration. [87] I ve heard others mention that that gopherwood may have been a type of plywood that was impregnated through and through with a resin ( pitched inside and out ) that would have made it extremely tough and durable. 82

Gopherwood I ve also heard reported that some Canadians have made something similar that is nearly as strong as steel, and have made gun barrels from it. Whatever gopherwood was, it was wood made resistant to water and decay. 83

Gopherwood [157] According to a supposed eyewitness account by an Armenian, George Hagopian, who said he saw the Ark as a boy with his uncle in about 1902, The whole ark was petrified, turned to rock. Hagopian s recorded interview was preserved in a recording and subjected to a stress analysis which showed that he was telling the truth. 84

Resting Places [88] The Ark was to have rooms, literally nests. Nests are resting places. In John 14:2 mansions may literally be resting places. JOH 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 85

Ark [70] Ark - Hebrew tabhah is not the same word as used for ark of the covenant. This Ark (tabhah) is also used for ark of bulrushes in which Moses was preserved as a baby in Exodus 2:3. It seems to be an ancient word for box which floats on the water. 86

Ark [70] The building of the Ark must have been somewhat of a local joke for sometime, since according to Genesis 2:4-6 it had never rained before and they had never witnessed any flood. Noah simply was proceeding by faith, believing God for things not yet seen, for the salvation of his household. (HEB 11:7) 87

88

God s Plan Of Salvation Trees [88] Just as Christ the Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8), God had a plan of salvation for His people long before the first drop of rain fell. God revealed His plan to Noah. The Ark was made of wood, trees were cut. 89

God s Plan Of Salvation Trees [88] The trees for the Ark had to die so that man could live. The tree of the cross was to die so that man could live eternally with God. Christ was our tree. 90

God s Plan Of Salvation Decks [88] The Ark was to have three decks, representing our threefold salvation of spirit, soul and body. 1TH 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 91

God s Plan Of Salvation Pitch [70;88] The Hebrew word Kopher, translated pitch, is equivalent to the Hebrew Kaphar, meaning, to cover. The noun form means a covering. This word is interesting, as it is also the regular Hebrew word for atonement. This is the first mention of atonement in the Bible. 92

God s Plan Of Salvation Pitch [70;88] The pitch served as a covering for the Ark, to keep out the waters of judgment, just as the blood of the Lamb provides a perfect atonement for the soul. 93

God s Plan Of Salvation Window [70;88] The window for light and air was one cubit in height extending all around, and may have included a means for collecting water. The window was placed above. They were to look up at God, not at destruction below. COL 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 94

God s Plan Of Salvation Door [88] The door was in the side just as Christ s side was pierced to provide an opening to His heart. There was one door in the Ark just as there is only one way to salvation. JOH 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 95

God s Plan Of Salvation - Door JOH 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. Noah with his household went through the door and came out again to find pasture. 96

God s Plan Of Salvation Not Local As previously mentioned, there have been many that believe the flood to have been a local flood; but, a local flood would not have required such a large Ark. Not only that, if the flood were to be local, then God would only need to warn Noah to flee to another region taking the local fauna with him as necessary. 97

Preparations For The Flood Let s now look at preparations for the Flood: GEN 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. 18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. (Continued) 99

Preparations For The Flood 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. 21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. (Continued) 100

Preparations For The Flood 22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. GEN 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. 2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. (Continued) 101

Preparations For The Flood 3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. 4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. 5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. (Continued) 102

Preparations For The Flood 6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth. 7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, 9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had 103 commanded Noah. (Continued)

Preparations For The Flood 10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. (Continued) 104

Preparations For The Flood 13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; 14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort. (Continued) 105

Preparations For The Flood 15 And they went in unto Noah two and two of all flesh, wherein of life. 16 And they that went in, went female of all flesh, as God had him: and the LORD shut him in. into the ark, is the breath in male and commanded 106

Genesis 6:17 - Flood We see in verse Genesis 6:17: GEN 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. The Hebrew word mabbul, translated flood, is used only one other place in the Bible Psalm 29. 107

Genesis 6:17 - Flood PSA 29:10 The LORD sitteth upon (enthroned at) the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever. Psalm 29 must refer to the flood of Noah. 108

Flood [70] The word mabbul, (flood) is related to an Assyrian word meaning destruction. So we have destruction brought about by waters. The word waters in Genesis 6:17 is plural signifying more than one source. The phrase flood of waters, according to Morris, could be translated the hydraulic cataclysm. 109

Flood [70] Like the Old Testament, the New Testament uses a unique word for the Flood of Noah, kataklusmos. Kataklusmos is used instead of the usual Greek word "potamos" which means flood. (See: Matt 24:39; Luke 17:27; 2PET 2:5, 3:6). The flood of Noah was therefore a unique event. 110

Genesis 6:18 Covenant [70] GEN 6:18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. Covenant - Hebrew berith. This is the first mention of the word covenant in the Bible. God promises a covenant. 111

Covenant The Noahic Covenant will be detailed in Genesis 9:9-17 where the sign would be the rainbow. Eight people were to be preserved on the Ark. 112

Genesis 6:19 Enough Room GEN 6:19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. As we have seen, there would have been room for more than 125,000 sheep on the Ark. 113

Genesis 6:19 Enough Room [69;170] John Woodmorappe did a study to determine if the Ark described in Genesis was adequate. He determined that the Ark need only carry about 16,000 birds, animals, and reptiles, including dinosaurs, to preserve each kind. He also determined that the Ark could have provided enough room, even for the millions of insect species, plus the required food. 114

Genesis 6:20 Animals Came GEN 6:20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. Marine life need not have been included for obvious reasons. 115

Genesis 6:20 Animals Came [70] God would cause the animals to come to Noah of their own volition. Because of uniformity of climate and one land mass the animals would have been uniformly distributed and would not have needed to come from great distances to enter the Ark. 116

Genesis 6:21 Food [70] GEN 6:21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. Possibly many of the animals could have hibernated during the Flood and would not have required food. Hibernation would cause the animals to cease food intake and excretions, helping to ease the burden of provisions on 117 board the Ark.

Food The food on the Ark was probably used by many of these animals as they left the Ark at the end of the Flood. Meat was not used for food until after the Flood. The Ark would provide shelter from the storm of God s wrath as well as sustenance. 118

119

Genesis 6:22 - Obedience GEN 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. God is longsuffering. All this time Noah did what God had asked him to do by faith, obedient and without complaint, preaching righteousness to a wicked generation. 120

Obedience Genesis chapter 6 verse 8 said: But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. It was by God s grace that Noah was saved, and it is by God s grace that we are saved. 121

Obedience As is today, the whole world was disobedient and rebellious while Noah walked with God. 1PE 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 122

Obedience 2PE 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 123

Obedience LUK 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 124

125

Genesis 7:1 - Come Into The Ark GEN 7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. All thy house - Compare this with Acts 16:31. ACT 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 126

Genesis 7:1 - Come Into The Ark The word was come, not go, into the ark. God would be in the ark with them. 127

Come Into The Ark This is the first time the word come is found in the Bible. God didn t push; they were free to choose Him or the world. It's an invitation. God still says come. The choice is ours. 128

Come Into The Ark MAT 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Noah was in the ark, but we are in Christ. Noah means rest. It is now Christ who is coming to us, and we respond come. 129

Come Into The Ark REV 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 130

Genesis 7:2-3 Additional Animals GEN 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. 3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. 131

Genesis 7:2-3 Additional Animals In addition to the two each of chapter 6 verse 19, there were to be an additional amount of each clean animal, probably those intended to be domestic and sacrificial animals. 132

Additional Animals For Sacrifice [70] We should note that after leaving the ark Noah made sacrifices of every clean beast and bird in Genesis 8:20. GEN 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. This should adequately explain the need for additional animals and birds. 133

Additional Animals For Food It is also noted that after the flood the clean animals would be needed as food. GEN 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. (Continued) 134

Additional Animals For Food 3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. 135

Greater Proliferation [70] Of the additional five, four were probably to allow for greater proliferation of animals useful to mankind and, as we have noted, for food. The remaining one of the additional five, the seventh, would be for sacrifice. 136

137

Genesis 7:4 - Final Preparations [70] God next tells Noah to get ready, make the final preparations. GEN 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth 138

Genesis 7:4 - Final Preparations [70] Rain in our present world for forty days and nights, surrounding the entire globe, would be impossible given our existing atmospheric conditions. There would not be enough water in the atmosphere. 139

Final Preparations [70] In Genesis 7:4 All living things = Hebrew Kol yeyum, means all existence" or all that grows up. This implies that not only animals and humans, but plants and trees would be destroyed as well. They would be uprooted and buried to become coal beds, or would decay and disappear. 140

Final Preparations [47;70] In the laboratory it takes only 20 minutes to make coal. 141

Final Preparations There is a stand of Bristlecone Pine trees in the Inyo National Forest, California thought to be the oldest living things on Earth at an estimated 4600 years old. [171] This age fits comfortably with the approximate date range for the flood. 142

143

Genesis 7:5-7 - Entering The Ark GEN 7:5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. 6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth. 7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. 144

Genesis 7:5-7 - Entering The Ark Noah went into the ark - This marks the end of the antediluvian or pre-flood age and the beginning of the postdiluvian age. 145

Genesis 7:8-9 - Cohabit GEN 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, 9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah. Animals and man cohabit together without harm. 146

Natures Changed Notice the parallel to the change that comes to believer who is in Christ: 2CO 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 147

Natures Changed Just as the saved are changed, so the natures of the animals were changed to allow them to cohabit on the ark for the duration of their salvation from the flood. 148
