Before Reading: (5-7 min.) Day 1 Pp. 5-15, chapters 1-3. Look at the front cover. What do you think this book will be about? Read the blurb on the back cover. Do you have some more ideas now? As we begin this story, we will learn about Julian and his family. As you read, find out who is in his family, and how he feels about his family. Also, find out what Julian is trying to plan for his father s birthday. *New or important words (V): mysterious (9); signaling, arranging (11) This book contains lots of dialogue. As you read, pay attention to who is talking to help with comprehension. Readers think about the plot of the story. (setting, characters, problem, solution) How does Julian feel about his family? What does Julian want to do to make his father s birthday special? What do Julian and Huey do first to try to figure out what their father really wants for his birthday? Are they successful? How do you think Julian feels when his father says he likes a star best of all? Have you ever gotten a special gift for your father/mother? Explain.

Before Reading: (5-7 min.) Day 2 Pp. 16-33, chapters 4-5. As you read today, you will find out the ways Julian tries to find out Dad s secret dream. Would you try these things with your father? You will find out where Gloria has been, and how she tries to help out now that she has returned. *New or important words (V): eggbeater, equipment (17); concentrate (18); antenna (22) Readers make connections. (Text to self, text to text, text to world) Even though Julian has a good idea, what is the problem with getting Dad a special gift? Why does Julian think Dad must have a secret dream? How does Julian think he can use brain waves? Was he successful? What is Gloria s idea for finding out Dad s secret dream? Explain how the friends try out her idea, and the result. Write down your prediction of what will happen next.

Before Reading: (5-7 min.) Day 3 Pp. 33-47, chapters 6-7. Today, we will read about how Julian, Huey, and Gloria will carry out the mission to get snakes for Dad s birthday present. Read to find out how they prepared for catching the snakes. Will they be successful? We will also find out how they decorated for the party. Was your prediction from last time correct? *New or important words (V): poisonous (35) Readers revise predictions as they learn about new events. What do the children do to prepare for snake hunting? How do they feel when they see their first snake? Why is Julian afraid to use his stick? Does their snake catching plan work? Were they snakes they caught poisonous? How do you know? Why do they keep the snakes a secret from Julian s mom? Describe the decorations the children made for Dad s party. Have you ever had experience with snakes? Explain.

Before Reading: (5-7 min.) Day 4 Pp. 48-62, chapters 8-9. Today we will finish the story. We will read about the party, and see how Julian s dad feels about his special gift. Is his reaction what you expected? How does Julian get the name dream doctor? Think about the theme of this story. What message is the author conveying to us? *New or important words (V): Readers infer the theme of the story. (author s message) Why did Julian s dad say the decorations were unusual? Do you think Julian s father really likes the party? How do you know? What is Dad s reaction when he opens the present from Julian, Huey, and Gloria? Is it what everyone expected? How did the children make such a horrible mistake about Dad s secret dream? How did Julian s dad show that he wanted to overcome his fear? Why did Julian s dad call him a dream doctor? What do you think is the theme or message of this story? Do you have a fear of something? Can you think of a way to overcome it?
