Historical notes as we come to worship today on customs of the Pilgrims: The first pilgrims set sail from The Netherlands in the summer of 1620. In the earliest days worship began with the sound of a conch shell being blown or a by a drummer. Worshippers would usually process into the church out of a need for protection. The meeting houses had no heat for the services that typically last three or four hours. The Pilgrims sang a cappella using the words of the Psalter. Organs were not used until the18 th century. When hymns were first introduced they were led by a music director who lined them out by singing a line at the time with the congregation repeating. For worship, men and boys were seated on the right side, facing front, and women and girls on the left. The Bible was usually processed in and placed at the front or on the pulpit. The sermon was considered the high point of worship by the Pilgrims and the minister would preach often for two or three hours. A man was appointed to keep people awake by using a long pole to rap the sleepers awake. No one was permitted to leave until the service ended. In the earliest days, the congregation stood for all prayers with the opening prayer usually lasting fifteen minutes. Sometimes persons stood with arms raised above the heads. Kneeling was not acceptable by the Pilgrims because it was considered an idolatrous Roman practice. Free prayers were the most common form of prayers. The Lord s Prayer was not used.

We praise you that you have ever fulfilled your promise that, while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest shall not cease. We bless you for the order and constancy of nature, for the beauty of the earth, sky, and sea, and for the providence that year by year supplies our need. We thank you for your blessing on the work of those who plowed the soil and sowed the seed, and have now gathered in the fruits of the earth. And with our thanksgiving for these blessings, accept our praise, O God, for the eternal riches of your grace in Christ our Lord; to whom, with you, O Creator, and Holy Spirit, be all glory and honor and worship, for ever and ever. ANTHEM 11:00 a.m. Thank You, Jesus Kids sing - Accompanied by Meredith Farrell PRAYER OF YEARNING O God, as our heavenly Father and our Mother you have lavished on us gifts of life abundant. But we confess that we have often used your gifts carelessly, and acted as though we were not grateful. When we enjoy the fruits of the harvest, but forget they come from you, Then in your great mercy, Forgive us and help us. When we are full and satisfied, but ignore the cry of the hungry and those in need, When we are thoughtless, and do not treat with respect or care the wonderful world you have made, God our Maker have mercy on us, Forgive us and help us. Grant us thankful hearts and a loving concern for all people Through the love and grace of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First United Methodist Church Affirmation of Welcome As a community of the people of God, we are called to minister to all people of the world, knowing that the world is often an unloving place of alienation and brokenness. Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness, as we are challenged by the Gospel to be agents of healing within our society. We stand in affirmation with the apostle Paul that in Christ "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female." Christ has made us one. We acknowledge that this reconciliation encompasses all within the community of faith who exhibit any and all differences in the human condition including, but not limited to: race, gender, ethnicity, age, culture, physical and mental ability, educational level, economic status, personality, marital status, sexual orientation and gender identity in response to the often hostile social climate with respect to diversity within our society and the resulting feelings of alienation from the Church, we wish to make known our caring and concern. It is for this purpose that we affirm the following: all persons share the sacred worth that comes from being unique individuals created by God; all persons are welcome within the membership of this congregation upon making affirmation of faith; and that as members of this congregation, all persons are invited and encouraged to share in the sacramental and general life of this congregation.
