The Ordo lists the papal prayer intentions each month. Parishes are encouraged to publish the papal prayer intentions in their Sunday bulletins. To better know the concrete problems that trouble the Universal Church, especially those of the missions, the Holy Father asks that his monthly intentions be the object of knowledgeable and responsible prayer on the part of the people of God (Ordo). Lord our God, through the power of the Holy Spirit your Son healed our infirmities and diseases. When he sent forth his disciples to preach the Gospel, he commanded them to visit and heal the sick. Grant that all those who have answered the call to work in the medical field may receive with kindness those entrusted to their care and see in their patients the face of Christ. May he strengthen you by his grace, so that, in serving the sick with tender charity, you may serve Christ himself. And may almighty God bless you,

Proper Use of Video Technology during the Liturgy New technology, especially the use of video projectors and screens, is slowly gaining greater acceptance in the parishes here in the Diocese of Palm Beach. I have witnessed many different styles and would like to offer these suggestions based on guidelines published at the Orlando Liturgical Conference. 1. Technology used incorrectly or inappropriately can become a superfluous distraction which interferes with the Liturgy. a. The size, shape or design should not detract from the Church building and should not conflict with the surroundings. b. Colors, sound or projection should not take away from liturgy. Enhancing a liturgy and overpowering a liturgy are two different notions. 2. Location of Screen a. The primary focus of the assembly should be where the ritual action takes place, not the projection screen. b. Fully extended screens should not block the view of the altar, ambo, presider s chair or the main crucifix. 3. Backgrounds and Color a. Background graphics should be avoided since they make the text (and music) more difficult to read. b. Background color and text color should be strongly contrasting to improve readability. c. Garish or multiple colors should be a avoided so as not to become a distraction. Please take into account the art and environment of the church building when going over the available color palette. It may look good on your computer screen, but quite distracting and awful projected on the wall/video screen. 4. Motion and Transition a. Please do not host Karaoke hour during Mass no bouncing balls, moving cursors, animated pictures, flashing texts, etc. All of this distracts and draws attention away from the liturgical action. b. Transitioning from one slide to the next should be simple and discreet. It is not necessary to have elaborate dissolves, fly ins and fly outs, spinning or exploding texts or words being beamed up to the Mother Ship. All this again distracts from the liturgical action. 5. Projection of Text a. Fonts should be simple and easy to read. Be consistent in your font style throughout the liturgy. b. Prayers spoken by the Presider should not be projected. c. The Congregation is encouraged to listen to the Proclamation of the Word so for the Liturgy of the Word, the readings should not be projected. An exception to this would be during a bilingual/multi-lingual liturgy. 6. Projection of Music a. If hymnals or songbooks are available in the pews, a simple slide reference to the name of the song and its number in the book is sufficient. b. Both lyrics and musical notation should be projected.
7. Projection of Art Work a. The use of simple and appropriate artwork or pictures should be limited to pre and post liturgy projection. Artwork and pictures displayed during the liturgy are distracting and clearly move one s focus from the liturgical actions taking place. b. Animated artwork or pictures should never be used in a presentation. 8. Projection of Pre-recorded Videos a. Video homilies approved by the Bishop may be shown during the normal homily time. Other videos should be shown before Mass or possibly after the Prayer after Communion. Video announcements shown at the end of Mass should be short and simple. b. Videos connected to weddings, funerals or other special occasions may be projected prior to or after the Mass, but not during the Mass. 9. Copyrights a. Any necessary copyright permission must be obtained and all copyrights must be respected. This includes music, liturgical texts, artwork, and computer software. b. Video projection and/or live streaming of music often requires a separate copyright license from a printed music license. 10. Challenges to bear in mind a. Projection of parish announcements and/or video projections before and after Mass is permissible; though kept to a minimum so as not to intrude on private prayer taking place. b. To avoid having people constantly looking at a television or video screen, project only what is necessary to help the congregation participate fully in the liturgy. c. If the equipment is cheap or outdated it will be prone to malfunction during the liturgy and serve as a distraction. Quality and longevity of equipment is essential. Remember the adage: If you re going to do something, then do it right.
The Holy Year will open on 8 December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This liturgical feast day recalls God s action from the very beginning of the history of mankind. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God did not wish to leave humanity alone in the throes of evil. And so he turned his gaze to Mary, holy and immaculate in love (cf. Eph 1:4), choosing her to be the Mother of man s Redeemer. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive. I will have the joy of opening the Holy Door on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope. On the following Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Rome that is, the Basilica of Saint John Lateran will be opened. In the following weeks, the Holy Doors of the other Papal Basilicas will be opened. On the same Sunday, I will announce that in every local church, at the cathedral the mother church of the faithful in any particular area or, alternatively, at the co-cathedral or another church of special significance, a Door of Mercy will be opened for the duration of the Holy Year. At the discretion of the local ordinary, a similar door may be opened at any shrine frequented by large groups of pilgrims, since visits to these holy sites are so often grace-filled moments, as people discover a path to conversion. Every Particular Church, therefore, will be directly involved in living out this Holy Year as an extraordinary moment of grace and spiritual renewal. Thus the Jubilee will be celebrated both in Rome and in the Particular Churches as a visible sign of the Church s universal communion. Misericordiae Vultus, 3; April 11, 2015 Year of Mercy Diocese of Palm Beach Bishop Barbarito has asked the local deaneries to discuss parish based programs and initiatives that the pastors deem most effective for preaching about mercy and also being instruments of mercy. The November newsletter will have the details of what the deaneries/parishes have proposed.
