Mary: Praying & Living the Joyful Mysteries 27 February 2015 + The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father Hail Mary Hail Mary Hail Mary

The 1 st Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation of Our Lord (Luke 1:26-33, 38) Image: The Annunciation by Henry Ossawa Tanner Song: Let It Be Done Unto Me by Danielle Rose (From the perspective of the Angel Gabriel) The Lord sent me to Mary As she was praying in the sun. I said, Hail Mary, favored one, The Lord is with you. Mary, it is true. She did not understand. She said, Shall I touch the sky With these small hands? A peasant girl from Galilee Destined to become the Queen of Peace. And all the heavens and the earth Stand still in silence, Waiting for her soul to reply. She is free to choose God will never abuse the sacred Yes She cannot be denied... Let it be done unto me! With one small yes the world will be redeemed. What was impossible is now a possibility. Let it be done unto me! Mary, do not be afraid. Behold, you will conceive a son Through whom the world is saved. Humility will be your throne, And in your womb our God will find a home. Oh, Lord, how can this be? I have not given any man my body s purity! The Spirit will come down, Like once barren Elizabeth Can now with child be found! She said Yes to the Father, Yes to the unknown, Yes with all her strength, Yes to God alone. The first Holy Communion Took place that blessed day. Christ came into her body When Mary chose to say... 2. Mary, open us to the joy of unimagined possibilities Hail Mary 3. Mary, show us the joy of our freedom to respond Hail Mary 4. Mary, open us to say YES in our own lives Hail Mary 5. Mary, help us surrender our worries to the Holy Spirit Hail Mary 6. Mary, open us to the joy of trusting in God s promise Hail Mary 7. Mary, excite us with the joy of bringing Christ to others Hail Mary 8. Mary, stretch us so we can embrace plans bigger than our own Hail Mary 9. The 2 nd Joyful Mystery: The Visitation (Luke 1:39-45) Image: from The Nativity Story Song: Jesus Within You by Danielle Rose (From the perspectives of Elizabeth and Mary) I had not seen you for a long time When the fragrance of your voice filled the air. Oh, you bring out the child in me. Your presence is a prayer. Blessed are you; blessed is the fruit of your womb! Who am I that God should come to me in you? A child leaps from deep within me, Reaching toward the Truth... I see Christ. I see Jesus within you My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. I rejoice in He who blessed me, God my Savior. Oh, from now on when you remember me, remember God s great mercy. He has looked upon my soul, little and lowly, He has turned a one-room house into a palace for a king. God has done great things for me; His name is holy... You see Christ You see Jesus within me Look how God has chosen to reveal his soul in each of his own children--you and I, young and old. We must cherish Jesus presence in every human life. The first to worship Jesus was John, the unborn child. Blessed is the presence of Christ found within you. Lord, these tears of joy reveal my gratitude. Blessed are you who believed That what God spoke to you was true... I see Christ, I see Jesus Infant Jesus, Crucified Jesus, Risen Jesus, Beautiful Jesus Within you. 2. Mary, show us the joy of bringing your Son to others Hail Mary 3. Mary, quicken us in service to our sisters and brothers Hail Mary 4. Mary, help us bring life and energy to those around us Hail Mary 5. Mary, show us the joy of young and old embracing Hail Mary 6. Mary, comfort and strengthen us with the joy of trusting in God s faithfulness Hail Mary 11. Mary, help us carry Christ within us to everyone longing for God s Love Hail Mary

The 3 rd Joyful Mystery: The Nativity of Jesus (Luke 2:6-12) Image: Cathedral to Massive Stars by Bro. Charlie Wanda, SM Song: Star of Bethlehem by Danielle Rose (From the perspective of the Star of Bethlehem) I am only one among the millions. Look at all the different stars up in the sky. What can I do for my Lord Jesus? He was born in Bethlehem this starry night. Then the Lord said unto me, O Little Star of Bethlehem, I want you to be the one to show the way. I will magnify your soul So the whole wide world will know That the King of Peace was born on earth today. And I was chosen to shine the light, To show the way to our Lord Jesus Christ! And the magi from the East they were wandering. They were searching to find Jesus in the night, When they saw me, little star, at my rising. They saw streams of love come flashing from my life. So I led them on through darkness To behold the newborn king, Then I stopped over the place where Jesus lay, with the gift of my small light, the magi became filled with joy. They found Mary with her child and bowed in praise. I cannot give you gold or frankincense or myrrh. I do not have a glorious gift to sacrifice. I am only one small star, but I ll lead children from afar To behold the child who made the stars of night. We are chosen to shine the light, To show the way to our Lord Jesus Christ! 2. Mary, show us the joy of God s nearness & tenderness Hail Mary 3. Mary, amaze us with the joy of God s Word made flesh Hail Mary 4. Mary, humble us with the innocence, purity and humility of God s presence in our midst Hail Mary 5. Mary, help us to be stars, pointing the way to Jesus Hail Mary 6. Mary, be a star for us, pointing to God s plan in our lives Hail Mary 7. Mary, help us know the delightful joy of shining God s light Hail Mary 8. Mary, lead us to the modern day mangers in our cities where there is still no room in the inn Hail Mary 9. Mary, teach us to offer our little gifts to the child, knowing he will multiply and increase them Hail Mary 10. Mary, open us to communion and community with unlikely people in unlikely places Hail Mary 11. Mary, help us know the joy of bearing witness to Jesus Hail Mary

The 4 th Joyful Mystery: The Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:25-32) Image: Simeon and the Christ Child by Rembrandt Song: Simeon s Joy by Danielle Rose (From the perspective of Simeon) You know that I love you, But when shall my heart be consoled? Yes, he is coming, says my Lord of Hosts. He s purer than light made of gold. In the temple I wait for him. I ll not see death till he appears, Till I gaze on the face of salvation. Look, he is coming! My savior draws near. I hold him in my arms I have met Jesus bless the Lord! Take my life, for my eyes have seen the light, The glory, the joy of your child. The Spirit dances upon my face I have touched God s living Word. Joseph and Mary, I bless you with grace As you present your son now with joy to the Lord. The proud will fall and the poor will rise. He will be hated for love. Mary, your heart will be pierced seven times, Revealing the thoughts of the Father above. 2. Mary, help us to see the glory of God in our ordinary lives Hail Mary 3. The 5 th Joyful Mystery: The Finding in the Temple (Luke 2:41-50) Image: Statue by Joseph Aspell Song: The Finding by Danielle Rose (From the perspective of Joseph) Twelve years ago it all began with an angel in my dream. I took Mary as my wife, and we united in our holy virginity. Simeon and Anna announced his destiny. Who am I that God should be obedient to me? One day a carpenter s son will be nailed to a tree. Three days ago I held my child s small hands, God s hands that made the morning. I am father to a king who has not come to rule the world. But now my child is gone; what have I done wrong? God left me without warning! Why would God cause me such distress? Have I failed to live in faithfulness? Where did you go, Jesus? I ve been searching for days, calling out your name with every prayer I pray. See the tears of a father in search of a son. I m so afraid I did not know quite how to love. Trouble is, I didn t notice right away that you were gone. I went searching for your presence among friends and family never has one day felt so long. I did not find you there, so I turned right back around. Oh, where can my beloved child be found? In the streets and squares of Jerusalem, where is my beloved now? Desperate for grace, I went with Mary to the temple to pray. We were astonished to find Jesus teaching elders, who looked with wonder at his face. I ran to embrace him. Son, why have you done this to us? We have been looking for you! We have been so anxious! Jesus turned and said, Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that in my Father s house I d be? You are the earthly father of the Heavenly Father s Son. I will hide in your home till my hour comes. Jesus spoke in words I could not comprehend. All I know is that my son was lost and has been found again. I love him as my child, but revere him as my God. I m the chosen father of the Lord s own perfect love. What joy it is to find God s perfect love. 2. Mary, help us to know the joy of seeking and finding God Hail Mary 3. Mary, help us be like Joseph--trusting in dreams Hail Mary 4. Mary, help us to be like Joseph--taking you into our lives Hail Mary 5. Mary, open us to seeing the light at the end of all tunnels Hail Mary 6. Mary, help us to find Jesus in our own lives--in the ordinary Hail Mary 7. Mary, help us to find our own way and path to God s house Hail Mary 8. Mary, give us confidence to be who God has created us to be Hail Mary 9. Mary, help us be continually renewed as we discover again and again how much God loves us Hail Mary 10. Mary, help us realize that Jesus never leaves us Hail Mary 11. Mary, give us courage to seek and find God s will for our lives Hail Mary

Hail, Holy Queen Image: Founders Hollow in upstate New York Song: Hail, Holy Queen by Danielle Rose Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy: our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we might be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. Marian Prayer of Pope Francis Mary, Virgin and Mother, you who, moved by the Holy Spirit, welcomed the word of life in the depths of your humble faith: as you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One, help us to say our own yes to the urgent call, as pressing as ever, to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Filled with Christ s presence, you brought joy to John the Baptist, making him exult in the womb of his mother. Brimming over with joy, you sang of the great things done by God. Standing at the foot of the cross, with unyielding faith, you received the joyful comfort of the resurrection and joined the disciples in awaiting the Spirit so that the evangelizing Church might be born. Obtain for us now a new ardor born of the resurrection that we may bring to all the Gospel of Life which triumphs over death. Give us a holy courage to seek new paths, that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man and woman. Virgin of listening and contemplation, Mother of Love, Bride of the eternal wedding feast, pray for the Church, whose pure icon you are, that she may never be closed in on herself or lose her passion for establishing God s kingdom. Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Mother of the Living Gospel, wellspring of happiness for God s little ones, pray for us.
