May 6, 2018 A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT, AN ETERNAL JOY One of the political journalists wrote recently that every American president is, in reality, a temporary president. He (and surely soon she ) holds that honorable position for a short while, a temporary moment, then the mantle of responsibility is passed to the successor. And surely there is no better definition of a United Methodist minister than that. He/she is a temporary minister, one who will hold the sacred position for a while, a short while really, then pass along the leadership to a successor. We United Methodists have been that way, have operated like that, since our very beginning. And while we are not always on the road, one of the powerful symbols is still the itinerant minister on horseback, traveling to the next preaching station. We United Methodist ministers are travelers. A foundational phenomenon of our denomination is that we preachers are in place and impact a church for the duration of our assignment, but it is the character of the church that endures and prevails. It is the faith and endurance of the congregation, and its generosity, patience, mission, and evangelistic fervor that determines the nature of the church, year after year, minister after minister, in good weathers and in bad. My time with you will end soon and I will join that impressive cadre of men who have served our Lord here. Another will take my place, but the well-being of the church is in your hands and your hearts. In that knowledge, I rest and am at peace. Welcome her as you have welcomed me. Embrace and encourage her as you have embraced and encouraged me. Continue to be a beacon of peace and acceptance in this community and in our world. In the grand scheme, our assignment here has been temporary. But for Bobbi and me, this has been a significant time. Our lives have been changed here and we are better for having walked this way with you. The assignment has been temporary but for us, it has brought eternal joy. For that and so much more, we are grateful.
