University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship May 6, 2018 8:30am 5th Sunday After Easter <<I N V I T E D >> Instrumental Prelude: When Morning Gilds the Skies arr. Dale Wood Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Opening Hymn #3: Holy God, We Praise Your Name Holy God, we praise your name, Lord of all, we bow before you; All on earth your scepter claim, all in heaven above adore you; Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign. Hark! The loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; Cherubim and seraphim in unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heavens with sweet accord; holy, holy, holy Lord. Lo! the apostolic train join your sacred Name to hallow; Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow; And from morn to set of sun, through the Church the song goes on. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name you; While in essence only one, undivided God we claim you, Then, adoring, bend the knee, and confess the mystery. Welcome & Greeting Time Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Scripture Reading: John 4:6-29, 39 (p. 864) Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?" 13
Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." 17 The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, "I have no husband'; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!" 19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." 26 Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking to you." 27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, "What do you want?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?" 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29 "Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?" 39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I have ever done." Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon Hymn #559: Make Room within My Heart, O God Bryan J. Leech Make room within my heart, O God, that you may form in me The image you have shown in Christ, my very life to be. Inspire my thought, O lofty One, to reach the highest plane, That I may know the mind of Christ, and him as greatest gain. Direct my will, O King of kings, subject it to your own, That every impulse, action, word, may make your kingdom known. Effect my prayer, great Trinity, eternal Three-in-One, Combine each part of me to praise the Father, Spirit, Son. Nehemiah 8:1-12 (p. 379) 1 all the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel. 2 Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. 3 He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. 4 The scribe Ezra stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand; and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah,
Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the law, while the people remained in their places. 8 So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our Lord; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, "Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved." 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. << WE RESPOND>> Hymn of Response #560: May the Mind of Christ My Savior May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day, By his love and power controlling all I do and say. May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph only through his power. May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, That I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea, Him exalting, self abasing this is victory. May I run the race before me, strong and brave to face the foe, Looking only unto Jesus, as I onward go. May his beauty rest upon me as I seek the lost to win, And may they forget the channel, seeing only him. Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
