PILGRIMAGE OF THE PEACEMAKERS Matthew 5:9 HOLY LAND & EGYPT 13 to 26 February 2016 Led by Archbishop Stephen Brislin Guided in the Holy Land by RIMON MAKHLOUF Accompanied by GÜNTHER SIMMERMACHER fowlertours.co.za

The PILGRIMAGE OF THE PEACEMAKERS is a special journey to the land of Christ which will include the great sites of Our Lord in the Holy Land as well as encounters with Palestinian and Jewish organisations working for peace. We will explore the roots of the conflict and see the situation first-hand to enable us to pray for justice and peace. In Cairo we will honour the 21 Coptic Martyrs slain by ISIS terrorists by visiting Coptic churches and meeting with local Christians to learn from their experiences and offer them our solidarity. The PILGRIMAGE OF THE PEACEMAKERS is a journey of prayer for peace and of solidarity with our fellow Christians and all people of peace in the Holy Land and Egypt. Led by Archbishop Stephen Brislin, Catholic top guide Rimon Makhlouf, and Southern Cross editor and The Holy Land Trek author Günther Simmermacher, it will be a pilgrimage in the footsteps and in service of our Lord Jesus Christ. Grafitti on the Separation Wall in Bethlehem Saturday, February 13: We meet at Johannesburg International Airport to depart on our flight to Tel Aviv. Sunday, February 14: We arrive in Tel Aviv and begin our Pilgrimage of the Peacemakers with Mass in the lovely St Anthony s Church in Jaffa. We proceed to the coastal city of Haifa, which is regarded as a city where Jews and Palestinians live together in relative harmony. We visit the Shrine of Our Lady on Mount Carmel, where the Carmelite Order was founded and where there is a South African connection with the late Fr Elias Friedman OCD, founder of the Association of Hebrew Catholics. Overnight: Mount Carmel Monday, February 15: In the morning we explore Haifa and visit Saffuriyya, an Arab village whose population was removed to make way for a national park, which was located at the ancient Greek city of Sepphoris, where experts believed St Joseph and Jesus worked. We then go to nearby Nazareth where we visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, with the grotto of Our Lady, St Joseph s church and Mary s Well at the Orthodox St Gabriel Church, where Our Lady drew water from the town s only source. In Cana, site of Our Lord s first miracle, married couples can renew their wedding vows. Overnight: Nazareth (Hotel Plaza 4* or similar) Tuesday, February 16: Today we explore the Sea of Galilee, around which most of Jesus public ministry took place. At Capernaum we can see the remains of Peter s house and of a fourth-century synagogue built on top of the one in which Jesus probably preached (the foundations of which we can still see). At Tabgha a church recalls the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, and the nearby chapel of Peter s Primacy marks the place where Christ entrusted the Church to St Peter. We drive up Mount of Beatitudes, on the slopes of which Jesus delivered his famous sermon. A highlight of the pilgrimage is the boat-ride on the Sea of Galilee on a recreation of a first-century fishing vessel, a time for fun and for prayerful reflection. In Tiberias we visit the Crusader church of St Peter s. Overnight: Nazareth Wednesday, February 17: After breakfast we drive through Samaria, which is mostly West Bank territory. We see the city of Jenin and drive by one of the many Palestinian refugee camp. Along the way we learn about the settlements Haifa s Bahai temple on the slopes of Mount Carmel Mary s Grotto in Annunciation Basilica, Nazareth Mount of Beatitudes Boat on the Sea of Galilee

The spot of Jesus birth in Bethlehem The Mount of Temptation Calvary in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Olive trees in Gethsemane Steps on which Jesus walked on Mount Zion built by Israel in the territory. In Nablus we visit Jacob s Well, where Jesus had the encounter with the woman at the well. We see the Palestinian capital Ramallah from an observation point. In Taybeh, the last fully Christian village in the region, we meet with the parish priest and then have lunch with the town s Sisters. Overnight: Bethlehem (Nativity Hotel or similar) Thursday, February 18: In Bethlehem we visit the ancient Basilica of the Nativity, which marks the place of Jesus birth. At Shepherds Field, where the angels announced the birth of the Messiah to the shepherds, is one of the Holy Land s loveliest sites. We stop at Separation Wall, which totally encircles Bethlehem, and have a meet with WI AM, the Palestinian Conflict Resolution Centre. Overnight: Bethlehem Friday, February 19: We visit Bethany, the modern West Bank town of al-eizariya (Place of Lazarus), where Jesus stayed with his friends Mary and Martha, and see Lazarus tomb. We then drive to visit the Qasr El Yahud baptismal site on the River Jordan, which for many years was off-limits to pilgrims, where we renew our baptismal vows at the spot where Jesus was baptised by his cousin John. In Jericho we visit the Franciscan Terra Sancta School, which educates many of the local children. We also see the situation in a Palestinian refugee camp near Jericho. Near the oasis city we view the Mount of Temptation in the desert where Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights. At the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, we can float on the mineral-rich water. We then visit the Association of Volunteers in International Service (AVSI) to learn about their development work in Palestine. Overnight: Bethlehem Saturday, February 20: This is the day we follow the Stations of the Cross, the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The Way of the Cross culminates in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, our faith s most sacred site. Here you can touch the rock where the cross stood and pray in the tomb from which Our Lord rose from the dead. We also visit the lovely St Anne s Church, a Crusader church on the site of the home of Saints Anne & Joachim, parents of the Blessed Virgin, and the Pools of Bethesda, where Our Lord cured the lame man. After viewing the Old City from an observation point on top of the Mount of Olives we visit the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of All Nations with the Rock of the Agony. We then meet with the ecumenical human rights and justice organisation Sabeel. Overnight: Bethlehem Sunday, February 21: After Sunday Mass in a local Catholic parish, we go to Mount Zion where we visit the impressive Dormition Abbey, where Our Lady fell asleep, the Cenacle (Upper Room) which commemorates the Last Supper, and the Church of St Peter in Gallicantu, where Jesus was tried by the Sanhedrin and where Peter denounced Our Lord three times. See the steps on which we know Jesus actually walked! In West Jerusalem we visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial, followed by a meeting with B tsalem, the Israeli Information Centre for Human Rights. We hope to arrange a meeting with a high-ranking Catholic leader before closing the Holy Land leg of our pilgrimage. Overnight: Bethlehem Monday, February 22: In the morning we depart for our flight to Cairo. After lunch and Mass we have time at leisure in our luxury hotel. Overnight: Cairo (Méridien 5*)

Tuesday, February 23: Today we visit of the Coptic (Christian) quarter of Cairo with the 7thcentury hanging church of El Moallaqa, the seat of the Coptic pope and the site of several reported apparitions of Mary. The nearby Ben Ezra Synagogue is the only vestige of the old Jewish quarter; according to local tradition, it is located on the site where baby Moses was found. The 4th-century church of Ss Serguis and Bacchus (or Abu Serga) is one of Cairo s most historic churches. Tradition has it that it was built on the site that housed the Holy Family during the Flight into Egypt. We visit the famous Egyptian Museum in Cairo with such great treasures as the Gold Mask of Tutankhamun. South-east of Cairo we visit the cave church of St Simon the Tanner at Mokattam. For dinner we enjoy a Nile Cruise with dinner and entertainment, including a bellydancer and a genuine dervish. Overnight: Cairo Wednesday, February 24: Today we drive to Anafora, a beautiful Orthodox Retreat Centre just outside Cairo. We visit the monasteries of Wadi el-natrun, one of the three early Christian monastic centres, located in the desert. We stop at the Coptic monasteries of Suryan and St Pishoy, founded in the 5th century, the most famous of the desert monasteries. Returning to Cairo, we meet with Christian Catholic community of Cairo, who will apprise us of their situation. Overnight: Cairo Thursday, February 25: We explore the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. We visit Al Moez Street, one of the oldest streets in Egypt, an eloquent witness of historic Cairo with the various monuments spread along both sides of the street. We then experience the sights and smells of the Khan el Khalili bazaar. After a final dinner we make our way to the airport for our flight home. Friday, February 26: After an unforgettable pilgrimage we land in South Africa, physically tired but spiritually refreshed, remembering the words of Psalm 125:1: They who trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed but abides forever.
