Lesson 1 June 4, 2017 Primary Learner s Manual The Shepherd The Good Shepherd Psalm 23 John 10:1-15 David strummed his harp to make beautiful melodies. He made up songs to praise God as his father s sheep grazed nearby. David took care of them. He was the youngest boy in the family and he was a shepherd. He led the sheep to good fields where they ate all the green grass they wanted. He took them to drink clear, fresh water from a still pool. David sang about God while the sheep and their little lambs rested. When it was time to go home, David led them on the best trails. He went before them to show them where to walk. He did not want them to get hurt or wander away and get lost. Sometimes David and the sheep had to go through a rocky ravine that had dark shadows where wild animals could hide. The sheep were not afraid because David was with them. They followed him. David protected the sheep. One time he killed a bear that tried to hurt his sheep. Another time he killed a lion. God blessed David all through his life. He wrote many songs about God. Some of them are in the book of Psalms in the Bible. A favorite is Psalm 23 about the Good Shep herd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd for His people. He loves us and cares for us as a shepherd loves his sheep and cares for them. Ac cepting Jesus as Savior makes you one of His flock. Then He becomes your Shepherd, responsible for your care. When a storm comes with lightning and thunder, we are not afraid. God is with us in the storm. When we are sick in bed, we trust God to take care of us. He does. God cares about you when you play with your friends. He takes care of you when you are at school. We can sing about God s love and care as David did. We praise and thank Him with singing. 3

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life,... nor things present, nor things to come,... shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus The Faithful Shepherd I am the Door of the sheep. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the Good Shepherd: the Good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. I lay down my life for the sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. from John 10 Psalm 23 1. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name s sake. 4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 6 Lesson 1
