THE KI D OF PREACHERS EEDED TODAY Willie Alvarenga 1

THE KI D OF PREACHERS EEDED TODAY By Willie Alvarenga Purpose of Lesson: Show audience the kind of preachers we need today. I TRODUCTIO : 1. Preachers are so needed today: a. They proclaim the gospel of Christ to the lost (Ephesians 6:19; Mark 16:15) b. They instruct the brethren with the purpose of presenting every man perfect in Christ (Colossians 1:28) c. They equip the brethren for the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12) d. God has chosen the method of preaching to save them that believe (I Corinthians 1:18, 21) 2. God has used preachers throughout the years: a. Noah (II Peter 2:5) b. Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5ff) c. Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1) d. Hosea (Hosea 1) e. The 12 apostles f. Paul g. Etc. 3. In this world we have many preachers: some good and some not so good. 4. With this in mind, we ask a question: What is the kind of preachers we need today? 5. We certainly don t need a. Preachers who are lazy in the work of the Lord b. Preachers who have no compassion for the lost souls 2

c. Preachers who care little for the church for which Jesus shed His blood d. Preachers who preach only for the money e. Preachers who have no respect for the authority of the Scriptures f. Preachers who are not willing to suffer for the Lord g. Preachers who are only interested in higher education and not preaching the Word (may not have a PhD, but have a BCV and a B.A.) 6. We don t need this kind of preachers. Do you know why? Answer is simple: We already have too many of them. 7. It is the purpose of this lesson to describe the kind of preachers needed today. I. WE EED PREACHERS WHO WILL ALLOW GOD TO SPEAK THROUGH THEIR SERMO S. A. God commands us to do this: a. II Timothy 4:1-5 b. Jonah 3:2 c. I Kings 22:14 d. I Peter 4:11 e. Colossians 3:17 f. Titus 2:1 g. Jeremiah 1:17 h. Ezekiel 2:7 i. Ezekiel 3:17 B. There will be some who will not want to hear God s Word (II Timothy 4:1-5; Ezekiel 2:7) a. A gospel preacher preached at a gospel meeting. After his lesson, a lady came to him and said everything was good, except 3

one thing, to many Scriptures. The gospel preacher replied: Sorry sister for letting God speak in my sermon. C. We must allowed God speak in our sermons. D. It is time for us to go back to the Bible, and let God speak in our lessons. E. Thus Saith the Lord (more than 827 times in the Bible) F. It is written about 80 times G. How do we let God speak in our sermons? a. By using the Bible in our lessons (Poem about Bible is sermons) H. The apostles and Jesus always made reference to Scriptures, because they wanted people to know what God said on the matter at hand I. Peter on the day of Pentecost allowed God to speak in his sermon (Acts 2:14-36) a. Acts 2:17-21 (Joel 2:28-32) b. Acts 2:25-28 (Psalms 16:8-11 c. Acts 2:30 (Psalms 132:11; II Sm. 7:12-13) d. Acts 2:31 (Psalms 16:10) e. Acts 2:34-35 (Psalms 110:1) J. Paul always allowed God to speak in his sermons: a. Paul reason from the Scriptures K. Jesus allowed God to speak in His sermons: a. The people marveled at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority and not like the scribes (Mark 1:22; Matthew 7:28) b. Why was this the case? Answer: For I have not spoken of myself: but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak (John 12:49) 4

c. Also the answer is found in Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 (Deuteronomy 8:2; 6:16; 6:13). L. There will be times when people will not want to hear God s Word: a. M. Therefore, a successful gospel preacher is one who lets God speak in his sermons. N. And, like brother Guy. Woods once said, When you preach, be simple, logical, and brief. If you are simple, the brethren will understand what you preached. If you are logical, the brethren will understand what you preached. And, if you are brief, the brethren will appreciate you. Also, let us consider the following point: II. WE EED PREACHERS WHO ARE WILLI G TO SUFFER FOR THE CAUSE OF CHRIST. A. We, as preachers, will suffer. a. Jesus was a preacher and he suffered b. Peter was a preacher and he suffered c. Stephen was as preacher and he suffered d. Paul was a preacher and he suffered e. You are a preacher, and you will suffered f. This is the teaching of the Bible B. The Bible tells us that we will go through difficult times a. II Timothy 3:12 We will suffer b. Philippians 1:29 It is our privilege to suffer for Christ c. Acts 14:22 Much tribulation d. Acts 5:40-41 Peter and John suffered e. Acts 14 Paul stoned at Listra f. Acts 7 Stephen stoned to death 5

g. Acts 12 James kill by Herod h. I Peter 5:8 Satan is trying to destroy us i. II Corinthians 4:7-9, 16-17 Treasure in earthen vessels C. When this takes place, we need to have the attitude of the apostles and early Christians, who never gave up! They trusted in the Lord! a. Romans 8:18 b. John 16:33 c. Hebrews 13:5 d. Acts 16:25 e. Romans 8:36-39 f. II Timothy 4:16-17 D. When you face difficult times, do the following: a. Turn to God for help (Psalms 27:1; 121:1; 34:19; Heb. 13:5; Ephesians 6:10) b. Turn to the Bible for guidance (Psalms 119:105), for happiness (Jeremiah 15:16), for strength (Ephesians 6:17), for salvation (James 1:21; II Timothy 3:15), for wisdom (Deuteronomy 4:6) c. Turn to prayer and ask God to help you (Acts 4:28-29; Eph. 6:19-20; Jeremiah 33:2) d. Think about the reward that awaits you (Romans 8:18; Matthew 5:10-12) E. Therefore, a successful gospel preacher is one who trusts in the Lord, and not in himself. 6

Consider one last point: III. WE EED PREACHERS WHO ARE WILLI G TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO THE WHOLE WORLD. A. The last words of Jesus Christ before ascending to the Father was: Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15) a. This is exactly what the Lord requires of us! B. We need to keep in mind that the world can only be saved through Jesus Christ, for a. Acts 4:12 b. John 10:9 c. John 14:6 d. John 3:16 e. I John 5:11 C. The gospel needs to be preached to the whole world. This needs to be our priority. D. This is the only way how the church will grow numerically Through the preaching of the gospel a. Acts 2:41 b. Acts 4:4 c. Acts 5:14 d. Acts 5:28 e. Acts 6:7 f. Acts 8:4 g. Acts 8:12 h. Acts 17:6 E. There is no other way to church growth, but through the preaching of the gospel. F. Let us make the priority of Jesus our priority (Luke 19:10) 7

G. Let us make the priority of Paul our priority (I Corinthians 9:16; Romans 15:19) H. People need the gospel, lets preach it to them! Additional Points: 1. We need preachers mighty in the Scriptures (Acts 18:24) 2. We need preachers who will set a good example (I Timothy 4:12) 3. We need preachers who will be man of prayer (Mark 1:35) 4. We need preachers who will practice what they preach (James 1:22) 5. We need preachers who love the Lord (Mark 12:30) 6. We need preachers who will imitate Jesus (I Peter 2:22) 7. We need preachers who will oppose false teachings (II John 9-11; Romans 16:17-18) CO CLUSIO 1. We could spend more time talking about this subject. 2. As of matter of fact, we could make this lesson a series of lessons for several weeks. 3. In essence: a. Preach the Word b. Be willing to suffer for the cause of Christ c. Evangelize 4. May God help us to keep this lesson in mind. 5. If you do this, you will be a successful gospel preacher. 6. One last advice: a. When you preach: be simple, logical and brief. 7. God bless you in your ministry 8
