Final Exam: January 23rd and January 24 th Final Exam Review Guide Your final exam will take place over the course of two days. The short answer portion is Day One, January 23rd and the 50 MC question exam will be on Day Two, January 24th. Complete the information below to help prepare you for your exam. Day One: January 23rd - Subjective Final Exam For the subjective part of your exam, be prepared to answer the following questions. Each question comes from one of the units we have studied this year. There are many different answers for these questions and your responses will be graded on clarity, accuracy, support and insight. (If you are struggling, you may want to use my hints to help get started). Use your textbook, class notes, assignments, the internet, etc. SEE ME IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS or NEED HELP 1. How can new ideas influence politics, economics and culture to shape history? This was a focus question for The Renaissance. Please explain and give support for your answer. Focus on humanism (Notes on the Renaissance and textbook, pages 28, 29) What did it focus on? What was the goal of the humanist? How did humanism change education? 2. Why do new ideas spark change? This was a focus question for The Ideas of the Enlightenment. Please explain using at least one example for support. How did the new idea of the Scientific Revolution, reason spark change? It was a time period of rebirth that linked the Middle Ages to the Modern Era by creating a shift from a religious centered world view to a secular world view. What was the Protestant Reformation? The Protestant Reformation was a widespread theological revolt in Europe against the abuses and control of the Roman Catholic Church. What were the push factors during the Age of Exploration? -God: Spread Christian religion Glory: for the country & the explorers Gold: gain spices from Asia What was the Columbian Exchange and how did it impact people living in Europe and in the Western Hemisphere? The Columbian Exchange refers to a period of cultural and biological exchanges between the New and Old Worlds. Exchanges of plants, animals, diseases and technology transformed European and Native American ways of life. Advancements in agricultural production increased mortality rates. Define imperialism and what are the primary causes and effects of imperialism? Imperialism is when a stronger country takes over a weaker country or the practice of extending a nation s power by gaining territories for a colonial empire. The primary cause for imperialism was economic causes: The search for raw material and like rubber, oil, tin for industry and the search for new markets to sell finished goods. Imperialism increased the wealth of the colonizing powers often increased at the expense of their colonies. Sadly, imperialism affected 90% of the continent of Africa. Social Darwinists viewed the mining of natural resources in these colonized lands as their right to take what they wanted. What are characteristics (beliefs) of capitalism? The Agricultural Revolution was a period of technological improvement and increased crop productivity. This led to a shift in population from rural to urban areas led to social changes in class structure, family structure, and the daily lives of people. List effects of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution led to rapid urbanization (growth of cities) and social and economic changes that resulted from the development of steam-power machinery and mass-production methods. As the industrial revolution became a global process, industrial nations developed a need to expand their markets, a need for industrial raw materials and advancements in communications and transportation. What and where are the Gunpowder Empires? The Islamic Gunpowder Empires The Muslim Empires are often referred to as Gunpowder Empires, an empire formed by outside conquerors who unified the regions that they conquered through the mastery of firearms.

Mogul (Mughal) Empire Which dynasty controlled China? Ming Dynasty Asian Empires around 1500 Which empire controlled Japan? The Tokugawa Shogunate. Japan had an emperor, but he did NOT have any real power. Japan was actually controlled by military leaders called Shoguns. Definitions Find the definition or description for each of the terms below. Renaissance- A time period of rebirth Imperialism- Process whereby powerful groups try to extend their power and increase their wealth by dominating weaker groups; rule by an emperor Spheres of Influence- was designed to provide trade access to China Mercantilism- They believed the prosperity of a nation depended on exporting more goods rather than importing Age of Absolutism- Took its name from a series of European monarchs who increased the power of their central governments Divine Right- Kings received their power from God and were only responsible to God. Socialism- An economic system in which society, often governments, owns and controls the means of production (The State) Capitalism- An economic system in which individuals rather than governments control the factors of production. Monotheism- The belief in one God Millet- religious nations where non-muslims could maintain their own religious traditions as long as it did not go against Muslim law.
