Processional Carol Once in Royal David s City Soloists only: All: Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor, and meek and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. And, through all his wondrous childhood, he would honour and obey, love and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he. For he is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us he grew; he was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew. and he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; for that Child who seemed so helpless is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing round, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high; when like stars his children crowned, all in white shall wait around. Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), Music: Irby (Henry John Gauntlett, 1805-1876) Welcome, Bidding Prayer and the Lord s Prayer

Scenes from Holy Trinity Church Hildersham Murals The Annunciation The Magnificat (all) MY soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.
Carol (All) O little town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Words: Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) Music R Vaughan Williams(1872-1958) Sixth Lesson Jess Logan St Luke tells of the Birth of Christ St Luke 2. 1, 3-7

Carol (all) While shepherds watched their flocks While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around. "Fear not," said he, for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind; "Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind. "To you, in David's town, this day is born of David's line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign: "The heavenly Babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid." Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song: "All glory be to God on high and on earth be peace; good will henceforth from heaven to me begin and never cease." Words: Nahum Tate (1652-1715) Music: Winchester Old, arranged William Henry Monk, 1823-1889) Eighth Lesson Keith Day The Wise Men are led by the Star to Jesus St Matthew 2. 1-11 Choir Carol The wise men came by starlight Words: Paul Wigmore Music: Swedish Melody arranged John Barnard
Carol (all) As with gladness As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold, as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee. Please remain standing As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before thee whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy-seat. As they offered gifts most rare at thy cradle rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin's alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee, our heavenly King. Holy Jesus, every day keep us in the narrow way, and, when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where thy need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. In the heavenly country bright need they no created light; thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there for ever may we sing alleluias to our King. Words: William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) Music: C Kocher (1786-1872) Ninth Lesson - Revd. Dr Julie Norris St John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation St John 1. 1-14
