September 27th, 2015 The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 Dear friends, Many of you will have shared in at least one, if not more, of all the events planned to celebrate our Parish s Golden Jubilee. We had concerts (from the St. Anthony s High School chorus and a classic piano recital by Tom Tirino, our Music Director), a musical play Man of LaMancha,, an indoor barbecue hosted by the Knights of Columbus, a LI Ducks ball game, and finally a splendid festive Mass in honor of Saint Matthew and a joyful and fun gala afternoon dinner dance just last weekend. I am particularly grateful to Dolores Tiernan who acted as General Chairwoman for all the various events and all the extensive planning. In addition, many of the Parish s staff and volunteers pitched in and assisted in all the aspects of this past year s celebrations and to them we all owe much appreciation and gratitude. However, something that stands out in my mind is the kindness and support from so many of you that I saw every time we had a special event. The Parish whose Golden Jubilee we have just celebrated is a very special place not only because of the things I mentioned above, but the perduring living Catholic Faith that has long been a distinctive feature of this Parish s half-century of existence. It is a joy to be part of the history and to help guide the future of this cherished community of faith, hope, and charity. God s blessings, Father Hewes

September 27th, 2015 The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone 864-3321 Fax 499-1530 Email: maryccd@smrcc.org LOOKING AHEAD Many families still have not registered their child/children for the upcoming Winter Program (September 2015 thru April 2016) grades two through eight, which begins tomorrow, Monday, September 28th. We cannot place your child without the proper paperwork. It is important that you return those bright orange forms as soon as possible so that your first and second choice does not become compromised. If you don t have the registration form, you can come into the Religion office and we will give you one. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office, on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 5:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $175.00 per child is due at that time. For safety reasons, ALL students, grades 1 thru 6, must be signed in and out by a parent or adult. Students in the 7th and 8th grades can be dropped off at the door by the Gym and come right upstairs to their classrooms BUT MUST BE SIGNED OUT EACH WEEK BY A PARENT OR ADULT. Situations in the past have caused us to insist on parent/adult sign out for these grades. This is for your child s safety and protection as well as ours, not to mention it is dark when the children are leaving the building and they do not always see or know where their parent has parked. GRADE LEVEL MASSES FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, October 4, 2015, 1st & 2nd grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 18, 2015, 3rd & 4th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 25, 2015, 5th & 6th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. These Masses do include all the Summer Program students as well. For those students attending grade level Masses listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9:10AM and remember your tithing envelopes as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to join us at these Masses. There will be hospitality downstairs in Msgr. Goggin Hall after all of these grade Masses. Please come, have a cup of coffee and meet other parents and parishioners. TEACHERS We love our teachers and we appreciate all that they do. The Religious Education Program is a success because of them. At this time, we are looking for new people (men and women) who would like to join our teaching staff. Also, our Special Needs program has grown over the past couple of years and we are in need of teachers who have experience in this area as well. If you are so inclined and would like to teach, please contact the Religion Office. Classes are cancelled on Monday, October 12th, for Columbus Day.

September 27th, 2015 The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 St. Matthew R.C. Church Friday October 2, 2015 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. October is Respect Life Month. To celebrate, the Diocesan Respect Life Office has invited all parishes in the Diocese of Rockville Centre to unite in prayer and participate in this special program for life. The program consists of having three different parishes (one in each of the three Vicariates) offer Eucharistic Adoration and Rosary for Life every day of the month. The program runs from October 1st through October 31st. Please join us in the Chapel! STAND UP FOR LIFE! The Long Island Coalition for Life s 18 th Annual Stand Up for Life event is Sunday October 4, from 2 to 3:30pm. Please join St Matthew s Respect Life Ministry on Rte. 110 at the south entrance of the mall as we prayerfully witness to the value of ALL life.

September 27th, 2015 The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 8 RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Matthew s will renew the Spiritual Adoption Program in September. The members of St. Matthew s parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 3,600 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to adopt. You may adopt a child individually or as a family. Even though you will not know the baby for whom you will be praying, you will be asked to name the child, thereby giving the baby the humanity he or she deserves. You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of prayer is great. You will receive monthly reports through the parish bulletin describing your baby s development. Posters at the Respect Life Bulletin Board in the breezeway will also update you on the monthly progress of your child whose date of birth we will celebrate on Father s Day in June of 2016. Keep track of the size, too, with the ruler on the right edge of the posters! Best of all, it s free -- the only commitment requested is a short daily prayer! There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God has given you? For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions on the Respect Life bulletin board in the breezeway or call Lisa at 499-6684 DAY ONE Developing Baby At the moment the father s sperm and mother s egg unite, a new and unrepeatable human being comes into existence, complete with his own unique set of DNA. Although he is only one cell, everything about this little person is already present: color of eyes, blood type, the height he will grow to be, color of hair everything! He will play a role in his family and his community a role only he can play! Nothing is added after conception to make him a complete human being. He already exists; all he needs is nourishment, a safe, warm environment, and most of all love. His parents don t even know he exists yet. Pray for them to safely bring their baby to birth so he can fulfill the mission God has for him. Spiritual Adoption Prayer Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you to save the life of, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in Your presence and in the sight of all. Amen

September 27th, 2015 The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time 9 Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world missions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our September Universal: That opportunities for education and employment may increase for all young people. Evangelization: That catechists may give witness by living in a way consistent with the faith they proclaim. Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as proposed by the Holy Father. Amen. "Today also, conscience is confused with personal opinion, subjective feelings, and selfwill." Blessed John Henry Newman 6/29/15) Whom do we obey, God or government? Pope Francis has repeatedly said that marriage must be a union of one man and one woman... Understanding this can help us as we welcome, respect, and care for gay people, on the one hand, and oppose same-sex marriage on the other hand. (irishcatholic.le; cruxnow.com, "Certainly every citizen of this land, regardless of their sexual orientation, deserves to be respected in their person and civic life. But enshrining same-sex marriage in our constitutional system of governance has dangers that may become fully evident over time," said Cardinal Sean O'Mally, Boston. A Washington State florist was sued under a state law that denies religious liberty to businesses when it comes to participating in same-sex marriages. Barronelle Stutzman is being sued both professionally and personally - meaning that her retirement savings and personal assets are at risk - when she turned down a longtime customer who asked her to produce a flower arrangement for his "wedding" to another man. She instead recommended other area florists. "Government is supposed to protect freedom, not intimidate citizens into acting contrary to their faith and conscience," said her ADF Legal Counsel Jeremy Tedesco. At this point in the recovery process, many Sandy Survivors find themselves handling post-disaster stress. The Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART), a new ministry of Catholic Charities, has trained, licensed social workers and a licensed clinical social worker available to assist clients impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The program addresses the ongoing stress clients and their families are continuing to experience as they recover from the affects Sandy had on them, their homes, their communities and their personal relationships. These trained therapists are able to support and counsel clients dealing with various forms of the postdisaster distress that have resulted in anxiety, depression and severe stress. Clinical therapy, trauma counseling and referral to supportive services are available to clients of all ages, in home or at the DART office. These services are available free of charge. We are happy to announce that Catholic Charities, Diocese of Rockville Centre, is now a registered charity with AmazonSmile. As most of you know, AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that allows customers to enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that now when you shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases back to Catholic Charities. Please make sure when you first visit the AmazonSmile site you select Catholic Charities Diocese of Rockville Centre as the charitable organization you wish to support when prompted and then you may begin to shop. 0.5% might seem like a small amount to be donated back to Catholic Charities but the amount adds up fast when many Amazon shoppers designate Catholic Charities as the charity to benefit. Go to http://smile.amazon.com for answers to all your questions and to register. Thank you for supporting Catholic Charities!
