David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath 4pm: 1 st 4 th Grade Classroom Schedule Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 16 17 Main Point: God gives us strength. Key Passage: Philippians 4:13 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: One tag will go on the child, another will go on the clipboard, and one will be used for checkout. Just place the Pick Up sticker on the clipboard to check the child out. If someone is new to the church or not in our database they can fill out a guest tag. Please make sure that you get their phone number in case we need to contact them and any special instructions for the care of their child. One teacher lead orderly free play. 4:00 4:10 ACTIVITY SHEET / ARRIVING ACTIVITY: Activity Sheet: Distribute activity pages and instruct the kids to complete the challenge. (On the back of the coloring sheet) INTRO ACTIVITY: Line Up Explain to the group that you they will have to work together to line up based on a specific description, such as height, shoe size, length of hair, and so forth. To make it more challenging, do not allow them to talk as they line up in order. End the game by asking the kids to line up by age. Place the crown on the youngest child s head. Say: We do not normally think of the youngest person in a group as the leader. But God can use anyone, no matter their size or age. A lot of people were surprised in today s story when they learned who would be Israel s next king. 4:10 4:15 CLEAN UP / GO OVER RULES & CONSEQUENCES: Rules are on the wall by the door 4:15 4:50 KIDS LIVE: Have the kids sit together. Keep an eye on them and the door for more kids. 4:50 5:00 CRAFT: Craft: David s bag and sling shot Items needed: paper bag, rocks, three popsicle sticks, tape, yarn, crayons Instructions: (1) Give each child a paper bag and have them decorate it and write the memory verse on it. (2) Give each child a printout of the five rocks and have them color and cut them out. 3) Give each child three popsicle sticks. Have the children tape the popsicle sticks in the shape of a Y. They will tape it in the middle. Have the children wrap yarn around the middle to hide the tape. Have the children tie yarn around the top to resemble a sling. The children can put the rocks and sling shot in their bag. Say: David selected five rocks which he took into battle to defeat Goliath. However, God gave David power to defeat Goliath. God gives us strength. 5:00 5:10 BIBLE STORY REVIEW: Story: Read the bible story found in the Action Bible on pages 270-281. Say: David was a young man with no armor and no sword. But David knew that God was on his side. David trusted God to defeat His enemy for Him. We sometimes think we can deal with our sin on our own, but we cannot. God gives us strength. Gospel Project Unit 10.3

4pm: 1 st 4 th Grade Classroom Schedule 5:10 5:20 REVIEW & APPLICATION QUESTIONS Review Questions: Family Feud Style Game (Items Needed: Buzzer) Divide the group into two teams and have one person from each team come to Check-In desk with the buzzer on it. Tell them to put their hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question. Award team 10 points if the person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. Review Does God look at our appearances or our hearts? (our hearts) How did David serve Saul? (David played music to soothe Saul) Did David want glory for himself or for God? (He wanted to glorify God and prove God s power) Could the Israelites have defeated Goliath on their own? (No, they were too afraid to even fight Goliath) Who defeated our biggest enemy for us? (Jesus conquered sin and death for us) Say: God gives us strength. Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: God gives us strength. 5:20 5:25 UNIT MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. *Use the Memory Verse sheet located in the teacher aid section of the bin. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: Mother May I? Select a child to be Mother. Invite the rest of the group to line up shoulder to shoulder across the room from Mother. Invite children to take turns asking Mother if they may take a certain number of a certain type of step (regular, giant, baby, bunny hops, frog hops, and so forth). Mother will respond with Yes, you may or No, you may not. If a child forgets to ask Mother, may I? he must return to where he started. The first child to reach Mother wins the game and becomes Mother for the next round. Say: The Israelites demanded a king, and God chose Saul as Israel s first king. Then God rejected Saul as king because of his sin. God chose David to be the next king. God used David to defeat Goliath. God gives us strength. Gospel Project Unit 10.3

Draw a picture of or write about what you would do if you were king over a country. How do you feel knowing that Jesus is our King forever? How can you show you trust Him? David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath 1 Samuel 16 17 FOLD MAIN POINT: GOD GAVE DAVID POWER TO DEFEAT GOLIATH. FAMILY DISCUSSION STARTERS Why do you think God chose David a smaller, younger man? How did David know he could beat Goliath? Can you think of someone else who defeated a giant enemy on behalf of His people? God was going to give Israel a new king. God told Samuel to visit a man in Bethlehem named Jesse. God said one of Jesse s sons would be Israel s next king. Jesse s oldest son was tall and handsome. Samuel, he s not the one, God said. Do not pay attention to what he looks like. You look at what you can see on the outside, but I see the heart. One by one, Jesse s sons approached Samuel, but God had not chosen them. Jesse said, My youngest son, David, is in the field taking care of the sheep. Jesse sent for David. When David arrived, God told Samuel, He s the one! Samuel poured oil on David s head to show God had chosen him to be the king. At this time, the Philistines enemies of Israel got ready for war. King Saul got his army ready to fight. The Philistines had a great warrior named Goliath. Goliath shouted at the Israelites, Send me your best man, and we ll fight one-onone. But none of the Israelites wanted to fight Goliath. David saw Goliath and watched the Israelites run away in fear. So David volunteered to fight. David explained, God will keep me safe. David chose five smooth stones from a nearby stream. David was armed with only the stones and a slingshot. You come to fight with a spear and sword, David replied, but I come to fight in the name of God! God always wins His battles! David slung a rock and hit Goliath in the forehead. Goliath fell facedown, and David killed him. Christ Connection: David was not a big or strong warrior, but he trusted God. God gave David power. When God sent His Son to earth, Jesus did not look like a strong warrior either. But by dying on the cross and coming back to life, Jesus showed His power to save sinners. 5 2016 LifeWay

The Gospel Project: 10.3 Elementary MC Guide David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 16 17 Main Point: God gives us strength. Key Passage: Philippians 4:13 Lesson: Go over Classroom Rules: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: Remind kids that the people of Israel demanded that God give them a king. Samuel was upset. The people were rejecting God as their king. But God agreed to give the people a king. God chose Saul as Israel s first king. Point out on the giant timeline last week s Bible story, God Rejected Saul as King. Remind kids that Saul did not obey God completely. God rejected Saul as king because of his sin. Saul did not stop being king right away, but God had a plan for someone else to become king. Our Bible story today tells us who became king: David Was Anointed and Fought Goliath. Do you know what anoint means? Anoint means to pour oil over. Let s listen to the Bible story to find out why someone poured oil over David. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: God gives us strength. Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: Raise your hand if you have heard the story of David and Goliath before. When you first hear the story, you might think that the story of David and Goliath is about how we should be brave like David. But what if you don t feel brave? What if you are like the Israelites and feel terrified? Remember our main point today: God gave David power to defeat Goliath. I love this! Did David defeat Goliath because David was an excellent soldier? Did he keep his sheep safe from wild animals because he was a professional shepherd? No! God did that! God gave David power. Can God give you power like He gave David? Yes. God gives us power against our greatest enemy sin. God gives the Holy Spirit to those who trust in Jesus. By His power, we can resist temptation. Apart from Jesus, we are weak and afraid. None of us would step up like David. Even if we tried, we would fail on our own. David reminds us of Jesus, the greatest hero, who came to save us. When we look to Jesus, He gives us salvation and eternal life. God gives us strength. Show MainPoint (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Application: Let s watch our discussion starter video and see what it might have to do with our story. Play the Discussion Starter Video: Our victories do not come by our own strength; God empowers us through His Spirit. Most of all, we already have the ultimate victory through His Son, Jesus. We are like the Israelites who were afraid to fight. Jesus did not look like a strong winner, but He won the victory for us.

Unit Memory Verse: David was able to defeat Goliath because of the strength God gave him. God gives us strength. Show U10.2_MemoryVerse Repeat after me Philippians 4:13 Show MainPoint Let s review our Main Point one more time. (Have them repeat the MAIN Point!) Dismiss kids to class: Bible Story: Video Saul was the king of Israel, but he disobeyed God. So God was going to give Israel a new king, a better king. God told Samuel to visit a man in Bethlehem named Jesse. God said one of Jesse s sons would be Israel s next king. So Samuel visited Jesse and his eight sons. Jesse s oldest son was tall and handsome. This must be the one God chose to be king, Samuel thought. Samuel, he s not the one, God said. Do not pay attention to what he looks like. You look at what you can see on the outside, but I see the heart. One by one, Jesse s sons approached Samuel, but God had not chosen them. Do you have any more sons? Samuel asked. Yes, Jesse said. My youngest son, David, is in the field taking care of the sheep. Jesse sent for David. When David arrived, God told Samuel, He s the one! Samuel poured oil on David s head to show God had chosen him to be the king. The Spirit of the Lord was with David, and Samuel went back home. Now Saul was bothered by an evil spirit. Saul s servants thought Saul might feel better if he listened to beautiful music. One of Saul s officials knew that Jesse s son, David, could play the harp. David came to Saul and whenever Saul felt troubled, David played his harp and Saul felt better. At this time, the Philistines enemies of Israel got ready for war. King Saul got his army ready to fight. The Philistines had a great warrior named Goliath. Goliath shouted at the Israelites, Send me your best man, and we ll fight one-on-one. But none of the Israelites wanted to fight Goliath. They were afraid of him. David s brothers were in Israel s army, and David brought them food. David saw Goliath and watched the Israelites run away in fear. So David volunteered to fight. You don t stand a chance against Goliath, Saul argued. I have killed wild animals, David explained. God will keep me safe. Saul offered his armor to David, but it was too heavy. David took off the armor and chose five smooth stones from a nearby stream. David was armed with only the stones and a slingshot. Goliath made fun of David because he was just a boy. You come to fight with a spear and sword, David replied, but I come to fight in the name of God! You have insulted Him, and God always wins His battles! David ran toward Goliath. He slung a rock and hit Goliath in the forehead.
