The Importance of the Bible Introduction 1. What do we really know about the Bible? A. This may seem like a strange question, because we live in a land of Bibles. B. People who read the Bible founded this government. On our coins we find In God We Trust, yet what do you know about God and the Bible? 1) Someone said: I know that Grandma had a big Bible. She used to read it all the time. When she died, mother got it. She has a lot of newspaper clippings in it, and several flowers are pressed in it, but we never read it. It has some beautiful pictures in it; we look at them once in a while. 2) Another may say, I know some of the stories about Bible men, like Noah, Abraham and Moses. I had these lessons when I was a child, when Mother sent me to Sunday school. 3) Still another may say, We have a fine Preacher, Priest, or Rabbi, and I listen to him tell about the Bible, but most people can t understand it. The Importance of the Bible 1

2. The purpose of this lesson this morning is to cause us to want to read the Bible regularly, study it, and learn what it says. A. It is hoped that the shroud of mystery that has been placed over the Bible by men will be torn away, laying it bare before your eyes. B. We should approach the Bible as we do letters, books, or other messages, but with much more importance. Our Bible is a book of information, inspired by God Himself and therefore it should be approached with respect and a desire to learn the truth. Why Does Man Need the Bible? 1. The Bible gives the best insight of our past. It tells of man s origin. Many of man s theories contradict the Bible. 2. It gives the best light for the present. It tells us of our mission in life. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. 3. It gives the best light for the future. It tells of man s destiny Matthew 25:31-46 The Importance of the Bible 2

The Timeliness of the Bible 1. It will never be out of date. It is as modern as today s front page internet news posting. 2. God has placed everything in the Bible that He expects man to know in order to be saved and live life on this earth pleasing to Him. Nothing should be added or taken away from the Bible. Revelation 22:18-19 2 John 9-11 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. 3. It met man s needs then and it does so now. Man has not changed. We still eat, breathe and sin. Romans 3:23 Romans 1:16-17 The Importance of the Bible 3

The Bible Blesses Man 1. This blessed book teaches man about God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It tells us about them and what they want us to do. 2. The Bible completely furnishes us to every good work. It tells all that we need in order to get to heaven. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. A. We can never know, appreciate, or understand the blessings that we have in Christ if we do not know His word, the Bible. Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, We Will Be Judged By The Bible 1. Everyone who has a Bible holds the key to eternal life in their hands. The Bible, the Words of Christ, will judge us and therefore we must not reject it. John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 2. We learn from the Bible what will happen to those who choose not to know God or obey the Bible. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 The Importance of the Bible 4

Conclusion 1. The Bible has information and instructions that are essential for living this life, letting us know what we must do in order to be saved, to enter into an eternal life with God. A. Man needs the Bible! 1) We cannot afford to miss eternity. Nothing, absolutely nothing is more important on this earth, that should keep us from entering an eternal rest with our Father and Lord. 2. Jesus invites us to come to Him. It is our choice. He has prepared for us, now it is up to us to prepare for Him. Matthew 11:28-30 John 14:1-3 A. We prepare by reading, knowing, understanding, and practicing the will of God revealed to us in the Holy, inspired Bible. The Importance of the Bible 5
