Wesley Connector MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF WESLEY CHAPEL UMC JANUARY 2017 Carry It On Wesley Chapel started with a song. In October of 1816, Harriot Reynolds was in her cake shop on Pearl Street singing, How tedious and tasteless the hours, when Jesus no longer I see. Elam Genung was walking past the shop and upon hearing the song, walked into the cake shop and joined her. A Methodist prayer meeting was organized and soon Obadiah Childs hosted the Methodist gatherings weekly. On June 20, 1817, Reverend John Shrader held Holy Communion in the dining room of Hannah Ruff s tavern. After worship, twenty-seven people signed the charter to officially organize the first Methodist Church in what is now Floyd County, Indiana. The first church building was erected on Lafayette Street and dedicated as Wesley Chapel on November 25, 1817. The Apostle Paul writes to the Church in Philippi: I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:4b-6). Paul describes the past, present and future of the people s partnership with God to carry on the gospel message. At Wesley Chapel, we have the responsibility to carry it on. In the first days of Wesley Chapel Harriet, Elam, Obidiah, Hannah, and Rev. Shrader brought the gospel of Jesus Christ to the town of New Albany. Faithful servants have passed the gospel to us 200 years later. Carry It On continued ourselves once again to God and to the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. Paul s words call upon God to complete the work of the gospel in us. The Wesley Chapel of 2017 is set for the future. We took a leap of faith and built a new building at the intersection of Highway 150 and I-64 in 2013 that will meet the needs of future generations. Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world. Our vision is to become disciples who are rooted in the love of Christ and grow in grace. The goal of each disciple to become like Jesus by following the way of Jesus. We are celebrating with joy how God is growing the kingdom through the faithful servants of our congregation. Thank you for being partners with God to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and action. May God continue to work in us to Carry It On. Grace and peace, Pastor Tony Alstott Thank You Thank you from Jesus Cares at Exit 0 to everyone who donated items to be distributed to homeless individuals. All of the items will be sincerely appreciated by those who receive them. New Sermon Series January 1-29 Celebrate Vision: As we enter our 200th year, we will celebrate the mission of making disciples and the vision of being rooted in Christ and growing in grace.
