Tenebrae Wednesday, March 28th, 8:00 pm Sacred Heart During the Paschal Triduum, matins and lauds are combined in a solemn evening celebration that includes psalms and readings while candles are gradually extinguished. The growing darkness symbolizes Christ's death and the hopelessness of the world without God. Holy Thursday March 29,5:00 pm St. Joseph,7:00 pm Sacred Heart The Holy Thursday Liturgy is an evening celebration. The Gloria is sung for the first time since Lent began six weeks ago, and as it is sung the bells are rung as we glory in the Cross of Christ. So gathered, the assembly has three stories to hear: The Passover meal, Paul s account of the Lord s Supper, and the washing of the feet. The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows, marked by a simplicity which reminds us that the principal moment of these three days is yet to come, the Resurrection. Following Communion properly under both kinds on this night the remaining Eucharist, enough for the Communion Service on Good Friday, is transferred in procession to the Place of Repose. Good Friday March 30th, 7 pm Sacred Heart There is never Mass on Good Friday, but instead a Solemn Celebration of the Lord s Passion and Holy Communion. The service itself is a preparation rite of silent prayer, with the clergy prostrated before the bare altar, followed by a Liturgy of the Word: scripture, homily and intercessions. The Passion is read from the Gospel of John. This is followed by the veneration of the Cross. The rite concludes with the simplest of Communion Services. The Liturgy ends, as it began, in silence. Holy Saturday March 31st, 8:30 pm Sacred Heart The liturgy on Holy Saturday is held at night, and is called Easter Vigil. It is the greatest celebration of the liturgical year, recalling and reliving the joy of Christ s Resurrection. The celebration incorporates rituals of darkness and light, of water blessing, and lots of Scripture reading. But the highlight is the Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion of the Elect, those people who have been preparing to become Catholic. Easter Sunday April 1st, 8:30 am, 10:30 am Sacred Heart, 12:15 pm St. Joseph The day on which Christians celebrate Jesus Resurrection from the dead; considered the most holy of all days and the climax of the Church s liturgical year.
