Fifth Sunday of Easter - Cycle C Deacon s Corner LOVE MAKES OUR WORLD GO ROUND Who is my neighbor? The Gospel writer explained that the reason behind the question was because he wished to justify himself. In other words, he wanted to obey the law of God, without giving up racial prejudice. He could accomplish that purpose by giving the word neighbor a restricted meaning. If it applied only to members of his own race, he had no obligation to love anyone outside the Jewish community. That approach had the effect of rendering the law virtually meaningless. With skillful manipulation, a person could keep this commandment with little or no effort. But the life and teachings of Jesus closed that door of escape forever. His love was without limits. It went beyond the established borders of race and religion, class and culture, family and friends. It included a Roman soldier and a Jewish zealot, a wealthy young man and an impoverished widow, a corrupt tax collector, who happened to be a Jew, and a good man who happened to be a Samaritan. And the most incredible thing of all was that his love crossed that ultimate and final boundary, to include even his enemies. No one had ever thought and lived like that in the history of the world. His kind of love was so far outside the norms of human behavior that it did not seem real. But it found lodging in a few hearts and began to spread. Within a generation after his death, chasms of separation were being bridged all over the Roman Empire. People of every nation, class and culture were coming together in a fellowship of faith. Paul captured the spirit of the movement, when he wrote: There does not exist among you, Jew or Greek, slave or freeman, male or female. All are one in Christ Jesus This was the effect of the new commandment that Jesus gave to his disciples. Everyone was included. No one was left out. It is new in terms of whom we are to Love. A teaspoon of sugar (Love) makes. Deacon Mike 18

Reflections Sunday, April 24, 2016 DON T WAIT Perhaps a bit too nostalgic, whenever I return to the Sea Cliff area I go past the house where I spent my life after the fourth grade. When moved from another house in that idyllic square mile community when I was ten, so for the next sixteen years or so that is where I would have hung my hat had I worn one. So many pleasant memories come back to me during each brief stay, and when I pass a particular house I might recall someone who was at least a small part of my life. That was the great thing about Sea Cliff: among the parish, the Scouts, the Little League, and the lone beach in the summer, my brother and I knew almost everyone within our age groups. Each visit, however, brings one regrettable memory. Julie Lynch was a dear friend of my mother who lost her son in an accident around Christmas one year. For whatever reason, Aunt Julie seemed to go out of her way to be kind to me. I was at Providence when my mother told me that Julie had cancer. Later that year I arrived home for the summer and was working at Grumman. Banking was different in those days; they closed at 3 o clock but were opened on Monday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. One Monday, I rode to the bank to deposit my check and passed Julie s house. I saw that she was raking. I immediately knew that I should stop and simply say hello. I did not. And that was the last time I saw her. Was getting to the bank that night so important? I am starting learn some of life s lessons. Finally. And while I have strong procrastination tendencies, I find myself making more of an effort to contact those I know whom, for whatever reason, I feel I should. I will not necessarily be knocking on doors with a box of candy or a bouquet of flowers. It may be a card, a call, or an email, but it might be a face to face as well. Too many people have been so good to me that I want them to know how much their presence in my life has helped me to find (I think I hope) the path that God has made for me. I know that I cannot do it alone; I need help. And He has blessed me with many helpers along the way. It s time for me to at least acknowledge that. How about you? Any helpers in your life? PRAYER Generous and Loving Father, Your boundless love and protection are gifts for which we give You much thanks. Give us the Grace we need to recognize, appreciate, and follow those You have placed in our lives to help us find our way to eternal salvation and happiness with You, Our Blessed Mother, All the Saints in heaven, and those who have been in our lives and who are with You now. This we ask in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Stewardship... Stewardship Sound Byte We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who give witness with a corporal work of mercy - welcoming the stranger - by sharing their gifts of hospitality with others through ministries such as greeters, ushers and welcome committee. 19
