KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP THE TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME BACK SUNDAY Sunday, August 27, 2017 10:55 a.m. www.knollwood.org To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness--this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.

KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Matt Jamison One: The Lord be with you. Barnabas Group Sunday School Teacher All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Gnossienne No. 1... Erik Satie, arr. Marty Edwards Marty Edwards, guitar THE CHORAL INTROIT I Love You, Lord... Laurie Klein Kathryn Ashworth, Wendy Oakley, and Beth Sanders I love You, Lord, and I lift my voice to worship You, O my soul rejoice. Take joy, my King, in what You hear, may it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear. THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Matt Jamison One: The God of all creation welcomes you. All: We gather in gratitude to worship. One: This is a place of transformation, where deserts become gardens and grace is freely given. All: We open ourselves so that God s power and love might change us. One: Receive the good things the Lord offers. All: We praise the Lord for these gifts. ~G. Andrew Tooze THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Matt Jamison *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 701 God Is Here!... BEECHER CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Kevin Mauney Fifth Grade Sunday School Teacher Merciful God, our world is not the world you envision. We are confronted by problems that seem unsolvable, challenges that are overwhelming, and risks that are too frightening to take. Faced with these, we have often failed. We have not welcomed others as we have been welcomed. We have not extended grace as we have received it. We have accepted things as they are and not as you desire. Forgive us our paralysis and inaction. Give us the courage and wisdom to change our world. Let us be bold enough in Christ to welcome all your children as our own beloved brothers and sisters. ~G. Andrew Tooze * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2

Greg Scheer Kathryn Ashworth, Wendy Oakley, and Beth Sanders The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never. I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever. 3

Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth; and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me; and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. In death's dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spreadst a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! And so through all the length of days, thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house forever. THE SERMON... Bob Setzer, Jr. WELCOME HIM AS YOU WOULD WELCOME ME RESPONDING IN FAITH THE INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP If you desire membership in this congregation, you are invited to come forward and the pastor will greet you. If you prefer not to come forward, you may speak to one of the ministers after the service. As an open membership church, we honor your previous baptism in any other Christian community. If you have not made a confession of faith, we invite you to do so and receive Christian baptism. Church members are invited to commit themselves anew to God and to God s service in the world. *THE HYMN OF DISCIPLESHIP, NO. 369 Lord of All Hopefulness... SLANE THE PASTORAL GREETING... TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. We would ask that you record your visit by filling out the friendship pad in the pew; email addresses are especially helpful. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at www.knollwood.org. You can also receive our newsletter and email announcements by emailing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, 725-1343. Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Today s service will focus on WELCOME. Just as school children are welcomed for a new school year, we welcome each of you to the beginning of a new year of church activities at Knollwood as we worship, learn and play together. As part of this welcome emphasis, we offer blessing and thanksgiving for our Sunday School teachers. The three hymns today share this emphasis on welcome, as we sing these words together: Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd s flock and fold, I m gonna eat at the welcome table, and Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace. We express appreciation to Knollwood musicians Kathryn Ashworth, Wendy Oakley, Beth Sanders, Richard Vinson, and Marty Edwards for sharing their musical gifts this morning. Marty is also one of the instructors teaching Suzuki guitar here at Knollwood. For more information about guitar lessons, contact Marty at edwards0924@gmail.com or Bill Kossler at wkossler@triad.rr.com. Today s Call to Worship and Prayer of Confession were written by Knollwood member Andy Tooze, and the Litany of Blessing and Dedication was written by Diane Lipsett. The acolytes are Anderson Beliveau and Colette Causby and the crucifer is Annie Winkelman. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net #A-724940. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Martin L. Holton, Jr., and Clarence M. Kirk by Mark, Melanie, and Kirk Holton. The white rose on the altar is given by Knollwood Baptist Church in memory of Ruby Sheridan. It is a symbol of the love and esteem in which this community of faith held her. ABOUT OUR BANNERS In the Bible and in church tradition, the dove and fire symbolize the Holy Spirit. According to the four Gospels, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove at his baptism (Mark 1:10 and parallels). John the Baptist promised the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16). From Moses encounter with God by the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) to the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fire is a sign of God s riveting, transforming presence. The Pentecost banner depicts the fire of God s challenge and the dove of God s gentle loving care. The artist who designed and painted the Pentecost banner is our own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Building B. Children s Worship for 1st through 3rd graders meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month.
