NOVEMBER 2017 A BON SECOURS ASSISTED LIVING RESIDENCE. The Staff of Province Place of Maryview Wishes you and yours a very blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Elizabeth Cabusora Resident Care Coordinator Coping with Changes If we can look back a year ago, several things are not the way they are today - including changes in ourselves. Each day we get older, and as one would hope - wiser, how do we handle and grow from these shifts in life? I would like to make a few suggestions to maintain good health and a sense of well-being. We can start by focusing on what we are grateful for. We can appreciate what we have even more when we don t take things for granted (side note: please join us as we practice an exercise for this and many more in our Mindfulness with Liz sessions Tuesdays at 10:30 A.M.). Recognizing, acknowledging and expressing our feelings appropriately is healthy for our emotions. Expressing emotions means strength of character, not weakness as some may think. We also must learn how to accept things we can t change. Facing our limitations with dignity and humor is always better than forcing ourselves through a situation we know will not waiver. Looking at the positive or silver lining is the best optimistic way to manage ourselves through a stressful situation. Remember we all have the capabilities to deal with every situation- no matter how minor or serious it may be. Also, keep in mind that if it seems to get overwhelming or far too challenging, please reach out to someone as soon as possible. It is always best to be safe. Here at Province Place of Maryview, that also means reaching out to staff appropriately and timely so we can address your concerns and help make whatever situation it is better for you. I would like to mention an excerpt from the Serenity Prayer (thank you to staff who remind me this as well!): God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference I hope you enjoy my monthly messages. Thank you for taking the time to read it! Mo Minton and Rick Germain had a pre-singing Circle jam session one day. It s so much fun to just sit down and enjoy some music together!

Western Branch Academy Kindergarten students came by for their monthly visit. We made toy spinners out of old dvds, marbles, bottle caps and stickers! They worked great!! The joint effort was fun for everyone involved, as you can see from the faces in the pictures!

Sterling Riggs, AKA Elvis, crooned his way into our hearts at an October Happy Hour. He sang our favorite Elvis hits and some of Elvis best hymns. It was a great time! Singing Circle Rick laid out a new layer of music for the Singing Circle!! He brought in a Karaoke machine and we had an opportunity to sing the songs of our choice. We had another opportunity to sing at a Happy Hour later in the week!!! Residents, guests and staff alike had a great time singing!

The Portsmouth Master Gardeners program on peanuts was lead by Master Gardener Jessie Pruden. We taste tested various peanut butters and even got a packet of peanuts to snack on. Thank you Jessie for another great program! History Lady, Vanessa Cole again made history come alive for us she told stories of Halloween in Civil War times! Province Place of Maryview front desk hours are: Business Office Monday through Thursday 8:30 am until 5:00 pm Reception Monday through Thursday evening 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday 8:30 am until 5:00 pm Holidays and Weekends 10:00 am until 6:00 pm The front door to our community is locked before and after front desk hours. Please press the button on the black box before or after hours. A staff member will be with you to open the door.

We took a tour of the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach one lovely Sunday afternoon. We were only able to take in the World War II planes because the museum is so huge. Many WWII era cars were a part of the display so we were able to check them out! There was an added surprise at the entrance of the museum. Care to guess what we saw? Look on page 7 to find out!

Laura Lou Campbell and Trudy Roberts helped Volunteer Rick Germain and Staffer, Vivian Minggia make an old-time favorite - Apple Brown Betty. We served it warm with vanilla ice cream! Yumm! We celebrated Oktoberfest with some great German music! Russ and Adam of the Happy Dutchmen Band played the accordion and trombone and sang some German tunes. The Happy Dutchman Band plays all over the Tidewater area and in Busch Gardens! Yes! A Dinosaur Park!!! At the entrance to the Military Aviation Museum!! Friends and families of our residents: Please be aware of those around you as you leave the building. We have some residents who have Wander Guard bracelets on to protect them from leaving the building and becoming lost. Please do not allow residents to follow you out of the building if the door alarm is sounding. We appreciate your attention to this safety matter. We love our residents!
