Pipe Organ Dedication Concert Preview When I consider the journey which brought us to this event I am consumed with gratitude. Far-off gratitude for mentors, teachers, ministers and colleagues who nurtured in me a love and appreciation for the great music of the Church and for the pipe organ in particular. Up-close gratitude for the extraordinary saints of this congregation who made this dream a reality. Upon my arrival some twenty years ago, I immediately began hearing woeful tales about our former instrument. It will not be long for this world, many proclaimed. Others suggested the museum from which parts were being purchased to keep it going had depleted its supply and we had better do something fast. Thanks to Jason Alden for breathing life into our beloved organ until the time was right for a new instrument. A committee possessing an epic proportion of gifts, passion and determination was appointed some seven years ago, brilliantly led by Sheila George Bright. They were equal parts activists, philanthropists, fund raisers, arm twisters and miracle workers. They took a noble and honorable path to provide an instrument for Royal Lane Baptist Church that is just right. It was at times a circuitous and complicated road but they persisted with grace and dogged determination. Every decision was made with a sound and well-developed sense of Royal Lane s worship philosophy and a desire for this instrument to be dedicated to the Glory of God. Dan Garland, the artists and technicians of Garland Pipe Organs, Danny Wesley Ray and Jason Alden were the absolute perfect team to bring this vision to fruition. I remain a veritable font of gratitude and count it a great honor to have journeyed with each of you on this holy adventure. Harry Wooten With pipes of tin and wood disclose that song the world has blurred, the hymn of life and love that flows from God s renewing word. Then boldly open wide the swell and with a trumpet call announce the news we thirst to tell: that Christ is Lord of all. Thomas Troeger, from Borrowed Light Welcome Steve and Jim Bush who joined RLBC on April 15, 2018 The next issues of The Mosaic are scheduled for May 16 & June 6, 2018. The deadline for submissions will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the date of publication.

Missions Matters Royal Lane has a long history of answering God s call to love through service. Missions Matters will appear in the Mosaic on a regular basis. It will highlight our continuing commitment to missions and other matters where we reach out to the community. This will be a place where we will tell our stories and perhaps help you find what matters most to you. Spreading the Warmth Do your little bit of good where you are. It s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world. Desmond Tutu Christine Nicolette-Gonzalez says it was a God thing. In the summer of 2012, she learned to knit. The stress of caring for others led to her own health crises. Knitting was relaxing and soon she had given many knitted scarves to friends and family. On a cold December day, she brought 5 scarves with her to the hospital to visit her mother-in-law. She impulsively began to distribute them to others saying, I made this for you. The stories they shared with her inspired her to found Spreading the Warmth. Since its founding scarves have been given out in six states and as far away as Chile and Australia. If you are interested, there are many ways you can volunteer. Some of these are: Donate yarn Tag scarves with the STW message Teach others to knit or crochet Drive others to share scarves on cold days The knitters would love for you to join them at Second Saturday Knit nights. Each event is held upstairs at the Whole Foods Market on the SE corner of Preston and Forest in North Dallas. Each meeting is come and go from 6:30-9:00 p.m. You can talk to Christine at church, email her at spreadingthewarmth@sbcglobal.net or visit their website at www.spreadingthewarmth.us.

Alliance. Being the Alliance of Baptists An alliance is a union or association formed for mutual benefit and for good work. This means that the denominational network of churches called the Alliance of Baptists is aptly named. We are a group of quirky, passionate, justice-seeking, fun-loving Baptists joined together to do good things in the world in the power of Christ. This was apparent in the theme for the Annual Gathering this year in Dayton, Ohio. Our focus was Earth: Beloved Community. Scholars and scientists and preachers brought words of welcome and warning, beckoning us to partner with and renew creation rather than dominate it. The music of the majestic organ, the community voices, and the African drums thumped the rhythm of God s heartbeat through vibrant worship. And, in the end, we found ourselves learning, loving, and living God s alliance with us in this good world. Alliance. I am grateful and impressed with Sarah Macias, who planned a masterful conference, one of the best and most meaningful events I ve ever attended. And Sandy and Doug Washington brought their love of Royal Lane and their lovely presence to the Alliance Gathering as well. This shows that Royal Lane has a unique alliance of people seeking to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. Royal Lane, too, is striving to become a beloved community. Alliance. Over the past several weeks, I have found great alliance among our pastoral staff as they have cultivated leadership, creativity, and enthusiasm. Laura Keller and Tim Schaefer were excellent proclaimers of God s tender, yet piercing message and I remain grateful for a deep bench from which to call when we need a fresh word. And of course, Harry Wooten weaved the visions and themes together in beautiful ways. This month we celebrate that Harry has abided with Royal Lane for twenty years. His presence as Minister of Music and Worship is a strong and holy alliance that continues to nourish us. I want you to recognize and remember that we have a wonderfully talented and gifted staff at Royal Lane who serves God and you with tireless passion. Alliance. We have a great opportunity to cultivate our interfaith alliance with our Muslim neighbors. Many churches, including Wilshire and First Methodist, are hosting Ramadan dinners in cooperation with the Dialogue Institute of Dallas. Royal Lane already has a meaningful connection to the Institute as we partnered together in a bake sale to raise over $2,000 for the victims of hurricane Harvey. They also provided Noah s Pudding in the Family Hall as a special treat of hospitality. Now, we are excited to be one of several churches in Dallas to host a Ramadan Dinner on Friday night, May 25, in our Family Hall. It is a time for families of all sizes, young and old, to learn more about this special time of year in the Muslim faith. Our Muslim friends will provide the food and give us an informative presentation about Ramadan. This is what it means to be friends, neighbors, learners, and world citizens. Alliance. Pastor Mike
