Sidney Sussex College Chapel Michaelmas Term 2015
Michaelmas: A Sonnet for St Michael the Archangel by Malcolm Guite Michaelmas gales assail the waning year, And Michael s scale is true, his blade is bright. He strips dead leaves; and leaves the living clear To flourish in the touch and reach of light. Archangel bring your balance, help me turn Upon this turning world with you and dance In the Great Dance. Draw near, help me discern, And trace the hidden grace in change and chance. Angel of fire, Love s fierce radiance, Drive through the deep until the steep waves part, Undo the dragon s sinuous influence And pierce the clotted darkness in my heart. Unchain the child you find there, break the spell And overthrow the tyrannies of Hell. From Sounding the Seasons: Poetry for the Christian Year, Canterbury Press, 2012. Used by kind permission of the poet. 2

Cover Art: An Icon of the Archangel Michael The 29 th of September in the Church s calendar is the feast of St Michael the Archangel ( Michaelmas ), the celebration that gives this term its name. Traditionally Michael has been held to be the protector of God s people, and a staunch opponent of the powers of evil. In Western art he is often depicted in battle against a serpent or dragon as a representation of the Devil.
