& West Freeborn Lutheran Churches Hartland, MN Sunday Morning Worship times: service is each Sunday at Sunday School begins at 10:15 a.m. West Freeborn service is each Sunday at 10:30 am. Please come early for coffee before the worship service. Sunday School begins at 9:15 a.m. From: Pastor Mark Hillmer How an Intentional Interim Works In the past (more than twenty years ago) when a pastor resigned or retired, a church would contact one nearby pastor to be its vacancy pastor to do the necessary pastoral duties and another (usually a retired pastor) to hold services. These people would hold the reins of the church until a new pastor arrived. The idea was to have a short vacancy and to find a new pastor as soon as possible. We now call that an unintentional interim. An intentional interim in one based on the idea that when a pastor leaves, the vacated church has an opportunity for self-examination and planning for the future. The old-time vacancies were as short as possible; intentional interims normally last about a year. The mechanics of an intentional interim, besides dealing with the normal pastoral duties, look something like the following. The church council selects a group of about 4-7 people to form a task force which works for 4-6 months studying where the church has been, evaluating its current situation and planning for the future. This Transition Task Force (TTF) may break up into committees like, Self-Study, Staffing Needs and Mission-Vision. The TTF writes its findings into a report which it presents to the council. The council then selects a call committee with the knowledge and consent of the church membership, depending on constitutional stipulations. The call committee (often made up of two council members, two TTF people and two or more atlarge congregational members) then proceeds with the calling of a new, full-time, regularly-called pastor. The interim pastor is an active member of the TTF but has nothing to do with the call committee. The above details can vary, depending on the needs of the congregation and the decisions of the council. The call committee fills out a Congregational Profile (provided by the Synod), receives nominations from the Synod office (congregational members may also submit candidates), interview candidates and recommends a name to the council which passes it on to a congregational vote.
