PASTOR S NOTES In the Gospels, Jesus often refers to himself, saying, I am... A scripture scholar wrote that this statement is in line with the statement that Moses heard from God when he asked who God is. I am who Am, but that Jesus use of the phrase always referred to life, resurrection, hope and love, rather than suffering, anger, judgment or punishment. I am the bread of life I am the resurrection...i am the living bread I am the way and the truth and the life. As far beyond human understanding as God is for all of us, so also is the unconditional love God has for all. As immeasurable and incomprehensible as the suffering of Jesus is so also is the love that moved him to experience this total self giving. The best of our spiritual tradition calls us to strive to love completely, as we ourselves have been loved. I see this deeply embodied in families with all the challenges and all the manifestations of it, particularly with parents and spouses. I see it symbolized and realized in ministries and activities of parish life with many embracing the opportunity to be a source of life and love, of hope and faith to others. Because we are human, we will never be perfect at it but because we have been given the gift of life and embraced with God s unconditional love, we are able to continually strive to be light and life, hope and love. This is something that we are not only invited to do, but it is what God depends on us to do. This weekend some members of the Capital Campaign committees will speak at all the masses to give us a thumbnail sketch of the status of our campaign. While I am experiencing some anxiousness about it (I tend to be anxious about things in general), I am told we are doing well and are where we should be. I DO know that many of you have stepped forward and have made pledges that reflect genuine sacrifices you will accept over the next five years for the good of your parish and the benefit of the students of St. Agatha and the parishioners of Ascension St. Susanna. God bless all of you, who have been able and willing to do this, with your treasure, your time and your talent. God bless all of you who are in the process of discerning what the sacrifice is that you will be able to make over the next five years. In the mean time, I ll keep drinking Chamomile tea before bed! Here s a shout out to all of you folks over at Bethlehem Woods, our fellow parishioners. We are with you in spirit and welcome you with open arms when and if you are able to come over this way for liturgy. This weekend will be the concluding liturgy for our friends in the SPRED program and for all the catechists. They will be celebrating especially at the Noon mass. Thank you for your witness to the Gospel and your reminding us of God s presence in our lives in special ways. Some of you will remember Fr. Phil Cyscon and Fr. Larry Lisowski. They will be celebrating their ordination anniversary on Monday of this week. Two of the finest priests in this local church. Did you hear the exchange between Billy and his teacher? Teacher: Billy, why do you always get so dirty? Billy: Well, I m a lot closer to the ground than you are. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION We all know the song. We can probably sing it without the Gather Book opened. It s the song that sends us forth from our Eucharistic Celebration with renewed and refreshed spirits The people in darkness, have seen a great light. The Lord of our longing has conquered the night. Let us build the City of God. May our tears be turned into dancing! For the Lord, our light and our love, has turned the night into day! Building the City of God is what being Church is all about. The Church is a project that is never finished. We are constantly building the Church. Today s first reading from Acts recounts one of the earliest decisions of the community of Christians. The community is growing rapidly, and yet it is failing to fulfill an aspect of its mission, the feeding of its own, and the neglected pointed this out. Because the Apostles couldn t do everything, seven people were chosen to concentrate on the ministry of service. Through them, many more came to embrace the Gospel. The second reading from Peter reminds us of the dignity that is ours as the community of the baptized, and encourages us to claim that dignity. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises of him who called your out of darkness into his wonderful light. As we claim the dignity that is ours through baptism, we find ourselves building the City of God. We find ourselves chosen and sent forth. The Church is always missionary and always expanding. The Church continues to require new ministries to accommodate new needs, new language groups, new cultures. The Church is all of us recognizing that if we believe the words of Jesus: whoever believes in me will do the works that I do and will do greater ones that these then we will find ourselves in relationship with him. The relationship that is ours with Jesus gives us the courage and the strength that is needed to continue making Church happen with each other and for each other. Look around. We ARE building the Church. WE ARE building the City of God, for The Lord of all kindness has called us to be, a light for his people to set their hearts free.

DOMESTIC ABUSE BRINGING CHILDREN TO CHURCH Few things are more important than bringing children to church for our Eucharistic celebration. God bless all of you who do this. It is the best way for them to learn and experience our gathering as a community, our prayer of thanksgiving and our being sent to do God s work in the world. It certainly brings joy to my life when you bring your children with you. Of course, I understand if you have to take your child out into the vestibule for any reason. Sometimes they get anxious and just need to get up and move around and that s just fine. The Eucharist is a profoundly sophisticated ritual which takes time and patience to assimilate and integrate into our lives. Look at how it has deepened over time in our own lives as adults! The fact that you parents are able to get everybody up and moving in the same direction at the same time astounds me and I am sure that it pleases God! Keep coming back! Fr. We Gather in Faith...We Give with Love Capital Campaign Giving From Our Hearts Outreach Helping Ascension St. Susanna Parish Harvey This week we continue to focus on the Giving From Our Hearts/Outreach portion of the Capital Campaign. We began the implementation of our five year Parish Prophetic Plan in the Spring of 2012. The Plan reestablished our commitment to "respond to basic human needs within our parish and beyond." Our participation in the "To Teach Who Christ Is" campaign that is being conducted at every parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago presents an opportunity to deliver on that commitment. At our request that our parishioners know exactly where funds raised in this effort are used, Cardinal George has agreed that we will allocate funds raised to our sharing parish, St. Agatha's, as discussed in last weeks bulletin and a maximum of $159,000 will be directed to Ascension St. Susanna's Parish in Harvey for its capital projects, specifically to tuck point, repair and preserve the century old historic church. The beautiful building serves as a peaceful sanctuary in an impoverished, crime ridden but determined South Suburban Neighborhood. Through leadership provided by Pastor, Fr. Thadeo Mgimba and Fr. Jim Flynn, and despite very limited resources, the dedicated parishioners manage to support a number of organizations within the parish including a youth and adult choir, a bible study group and a food pantry that provides meals to over 250 people a month.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP Those who are suffering the loss of a loved one are cordially invited to join a Grief Support Group, Thursday evenings, May 22 June 26, from 6:00 7:15 pm, in the SFX rectory. We will address such topics as: crazy is normal ; understanding what grief is and how it affects us; strategies for surviving grief and stress; dealing with feelings; naming and embracing where you are along the journey; and remembering and celebrating our loved ones who have moved beyond our reach. RESPECT LIFE There is an abortion facility which is called the ACU Health Center located at 736 North York Road, just south of Ogden Avenue in Hinsdale. A group of committed volunteers (grandmas, grandpas, men, women, college age and high school students) gather outside the ACU clinic early each Saturday morning, as well as on other days and at other times, to pray for the women, men, babies, clinic workers and doctors. They also offer counsel, asking women and men to choose life for their unborn children. Frequently, lives are saved. Please pray for all those impacted by abortion, especially the babies. From Boston s Cardinal O Malley s homily at Mass on the border of U.S. and Mexico The hard work and sacrifices of so many immigrant peoples is the secret of the success of this country. Last year about 25,000 children, mostly from Central America arrived in the US, unaccompanied by an adult. Tens of thousands of families are separated in the midst of migration patterns. More than 10 million undocumented immigrants are exposed to exploitation and lack access to basic human services, and are living in constant fear. They contribute to our economy by their hard work, often by contributing billions of dollars each year to the social security fund and to Medicare programs that will never benefit them. The author of Hebrews urges us to practice hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. He urges us to be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment. We have presently over 30,000 detainees, most of whom have no criminal connections. The cost of these detentions is about $2 billion a year. We have fallen into the hypocrisy of the Priest and Levite whom Jesus described in the parable of the Good Samaritan: we see our brother half dead on the side of the road and perhaps we say to ourselves: Poor soul and then go our way. It is not our responsibility, and with that we feel reassured, assuaged. The culture of comfort, which makes us think only of ourselves, makes us insensitive to the cries of other people living in a soap bubble, indifference to others. (burbujas, pompas de jabón). Our country has been the beneficiary of so many immigrant groups that had the courage and the fortitude to come to America. They came fleeing horrific conditions and harboring a dream of a better life for the children. They were some of the most industrious, ambitious and enterprising citizens of their own countries and brought enormous energy and good will to their new homeland. Their hard work and sacrifices have made this country great. Saturday wedding times are 1:00, 3:00 and 6:30 p.m. Rehearsals are usually scheduled on Friday evening. Some Fridays and Sundays are also available, but these days and times are limited. We do not schedule weddings during Lent. We are glad to review possible dates with the bride or groom. Please schedule the church before you sign a contract with a banquet facility. FOOD PANTRY The St. Francis Food Pantry is open every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The pantry serves clients who live in the 60525 and 60526 zip codes.
