Holy Humor Sunday at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church Page 1

2nd Sunday of Easter (Year C) 10:30 A.M. Sunday, April 3 rd, 2016 Today s Texts: Acts 5:27-32 Psalm 150 Revelation 1:4-8 John 20:19-31 (The worship service begins with the prelude. Let us silently prepare our hearts and allow others the same opportunity.) *We invite you to rise in body or in spirit Prelude: An Easter Meditation Charles Callahan Words of Welcome and Announcements Introit: Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain Arthur S. Sullivan *Call to Worship One: This is the time to rejoice! All: What better time than now! One: This is the day to laugh: What did the cabbage pastor say to the people? Pastor: Lettuce pray! One: How many choir directors does it take to change a lightbulb? Choir: No one knows, because no one ever watches the director! One : How many Presbyterians does it take to change a light bulb? All: Change? Presbyterians don t believe in change! One: What s the greatest joke ever? All: The one God played Easter morning on death! *Prayer of the Day Dour-faced in the presence of stunning sunsets; stricken with chronic severity while surrounded by gurgling babies; frozen-souled when touched by the warmth of grace; if we are made in your image, it's no wonder people think of you as a grouchy old geezer, God of Joy. So, breathe on us... fill our souls with: laughter which chases away the long faces; chuckles which wipe frowns off our brows; great guffaws which shatter hardened hearts; fill us, Breath of sidesplitting shrieks, so we can celebrate the last laugh on death. Page 2

*Hymn Christians We Are Made for Laughter HYMN TO JOY Words by Jo Cassiday-Maloney Christians, we are made for laughter, born to giggle and guffaw! Even in the great hereafter mirth is interspersed with awe. So don t hold back, let it fill you, let your muscles do their thing! Don t you worry, we won t drill you! Just let go and laugh and sing. This is how our great God made us faces, lungs, and hearts for glee And it s how God would parade us, showing forth most joyously All the love and all the gladness, such a great capacity For the joy that drives all sadness out of every you and me. We are people with a Savior who was not above a joke, Play with words was his behavior, he loved puns with all the folk. Joy Christ showed us, joy Christ showers everywhere on everyone Turn your face up like the flowers, catch the joy and have some fun! Christ was dead and now he s risen! Isn t that a cause for glee? Love has shattered all the prisons we have built so carefully. Now unfettered, free as breezes, giggles, snorts, and glee abound! Even when our laughter wheezes, we praise God with every sound. *Invitation to Confession *Prayer of Confession You know better than we do, Amused God, what important people we believe we are. Believing we have to be serious all the time, we miss out on the joy of your creation. Choosing to feast on the pain of the world, we skip the picnic offered in paradise. Clinging to the despair which is our best friend, we ignore Jesus, who can bring us home to your heart. Forgive us, Heart of Joy, and make us open to the startling, and upside-down, ways in which you work. Fill us with Easter's laughter; fill us with your healing joy; fill us with the love poured into us through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Page 3

When Jesus was around, lives were changed, the sick were healed, the sorrowful began to laugh with joy. The good news is that this joy is now given to us. Through the Holy Spirit, we are gifted with joy. We are sent forth to bring good news to the oppressed, to bring healing to the broken, to anoint everyone with the oil of gladness. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven. Amen. *Gloria Patri Glory to God, No. 581 *The Peace Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we also ought to forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Please greet those around you Prayer for Illumination Spirit of all Joy and Laughter, fill our hearts with mirth at the reading of your Word. Open our hearts to the gladness that can only be found in the truth of the resurrection. Amen! ( Dsus ) ( D ) Fsus F.. on us. Page 4

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Page 5

This is the day that you have made, O Lord - the first day of the week, when you created light out of darkness by the power of your Word and Spirit, when you created life out of death, raising Jesus from the grave. On this first day of the week we await the coming of your new creation, when we will be glad and rejoice forever, singing: Ps. 118:24; Isa. 65:17-1 You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ our Lord. With thanksgiving, we remember his words: I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you. We remember how he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. We remember how he took the cup after supper, saying, Page 6

This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, remember me. As death came through Adam, resurrection has come through Christ. Christ our Lord is coming again to reign and to put all enemies under his feet. Praise to you, Lord Jesus: God of grace, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and juice. Make us one people, one body in Christ, as we seek to show your steadfast love and proclaim the good news of salvation. Make a place for us at your heavenly banquet so that we may eat and drink with thanksgiving when all things are fulfilled in your holy realm. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Hear us as we pray as you taught us to pray, saying: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; Page 7

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Communion of the People All are invited to this feast. The servers will bring you bread and juice and you are invited to partake as soon as you receive them. Please let our servers know if you require gluten-free bread and it will be provided for you. Prayer after Communion *Hymn No. 246 Christ Is Alive! TRURO *Responsive Benediction The cross, we will take it. The bread, we will break it. The pain, we will bear it. The joy, we will share it.
