INTRODUCTION The papers of Eugene Morrow Violette contain papers collected by a professor of history in Missouri and Louisiana concerning land claims in the Louisiana Territory, 1806-1808; transcript of the inquest of the 5th Circuit Court of Missouri into charges against Joseph Smith, Jr., and other Mormons in Missouri, 1838; papers concerning the Missouri and Mississippi Railroad; and miscellaneous note cards. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by E. M. Violette on 1 June 1923. There is no accession number for this collection. FOLDER LIST f. 1-8 Transcript of testimony given at the court of inquiry of the 5th Circuit Court of Missouri, 12 November 1838 into the charges of high treason, murder, burglary, arson, robbery, and larceny against Joseph Smith Jr. and a large group of Mormons in Daviess and Caldwell counties. The testimony includes descriptions of meetings of the Danite Band; the incident at Gallatin, 18 October 1838; the battle with the militia under Captain Samuel Bogart, 25 October 1838; and statements of the Mormon leaders. The Mormons did not testify in their own defense. f. 9-10 Letters, protests, and summons of the Land Commission in St. Louis, related to claims in the Louisiana Territory, 1806-1808. f. 11-12 Papers of the Missouri and Mississippi Railroad, particularly those related to bonds issued in Macon County, Missouri, and the county debt. Articles of agreement between Iowa Railroad Contraction Company and Missouri and Mississippi Railroad, 1871. f. 13-15 Note cards listing, alphabetically by county, the churches in various Missouri counties. Also miscellaneous information about counties. Note cards listing publications in Missouri, particularly German publications. Gives some information about them.
