Etymological origin of forgiveness Etymology: The study of the historical linguistic change for words. Aphiemi (Greek origin): Send forth Send away Put distance between Charizomai (Greek origin): Grant generously and freely Bestow a favor unconditionally

Definition of Forgiveness Oblivion Expression used to apologize Lessening the force or intensity of the penalty deserved Forgetting the offense Responding to an offensive act by turning the other cheek

Forgiveness When we err how precious it would be to erase our own mistakes!

To forgive is to Have no concern for the offense or fault committed by another person Free someone from an obligation or punishment Reduce resentment and increase benevolence and love towards someone who has been unfair Reconciliation to regain mutual trust

Resentment binds us to the past preventing us from enjoying the present. When we hold a grudge against someone who has done something to us or who we think has hurt us, we are giving that person power over us, which they usually did not ask for. Let us examine our memories with compassion and understand that those painful situations of our experience, though unpleasant, gave us a great lesson and made us see and think about things in other ways. To live in the present and understanding that time does not go back is the rule of thumb to feeling free and enjoying every moment that life gifts us. Elías Benzadon

Forgiveness is an act by people who have reached an authentic maturity. Jean Piaget

The two debtors Matthew 18:23-35, Luke 7:40-43 Forgiveness James 3:1,12 We all offend many times. Watch your words. James 3:1,12

Benefits of forgiveness Gives us inner peace Reestablishes communication and produces harmony between the parties Heals our wounds Frees us from the chains that binds us to the past

The example of Jesus Teachings of Jesus in the Lord s prayer

Why do we need forgiveness? Forgiveness is grounded in love God loved us first Is manifested in love towards one another Forgiveness holds us accountable It frees us from guilt in order that we may love

TYPES OF FORGIVENESS Forgiving ourselves Forgiving others Forgiving God There are situations that cause disappointments There are attitudes and deeds committed by us that humiliate us, denigrate us and embarrass us These kinds of failures require self-forgiveness

Does it take time to forgive? It must be immediate, continuous and definitive One must understand the other person and show love It involves understanding painful facts in a new way

We both need forgiveness Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Acts 3:19

To obtain forgiveness one must show it To be forgiven, one must forgive. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37

Confession It is essential to forgive others So watch yourselves. If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Luke 17:3

The condition for forgiveness and the cleansing of sin: Confession 70 TIMES 7 How often should I forgive? Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Matthew 18: 21-22

The healing power of forgiveness Forgiveness can be a source of health, according to Dr. Javier Schlatter, author of Wounds in the Heart: The Healing Power of Forgiveness. There are studies that show that people who show a positive attitude towards forgiveness have less mental pathology, use fewer psychotropic drugs and have a higher tolerance threshold to pain and suffering.

What is the origin of bitterness, wounds and lack of forgiveness? A wounded heart does not only contaminate the person who holds a grudge, but all of those around them as well.

When should we forgive? Seek to forgive immediately If you fuel anger, you tempt Satan to tempt you Do not allow the day to end without resolving the conflict and saving your relationship

Forgiving is a process

5 steps to forgive Denial Rage Bargaining Acceptance Depression (it s my fault)

Lack of forgiveness is like a poison that we ingest daily drop by drop and which finally ends up harming us.

Are you chained and enslaved? Whoever does not forgive is chained to the past and remains a slave to their own pain and resentment. You must not remain a prisoner of your past.

Without forgiveness there is pain, resentment and bitterness Forgiveness is a step towards FREEDOM Forgiveness is the key to spiritual liberation, a barrier we must cross to totally free our souls.

My decision Forgive others as Jesus has forgiven me
