April - May 2018 HOLY PASCHA 674
"Brother," "Father," "Vladyka" It is difficult for a person entering the church for the first time to find a suitable way to address his neighbor. Indeed, how to address a candle seller - "woman," "Miss," "ma'am?" How to address a priest - "sir," "Mr.," "dude?" If you think about it, there is no difficulty. Christians are one family, where everyone is a relative to each other. Relatives do not need conventions. "Brother" or "sister" - the best address for the laity. We are all children of One God and the descendants of Adam and Eve. Father this is how we address priests as celebrants of the Sacraments, through which people are born to a spiritual life. Usually after the word Father a name is added, for example, Father Peter. A deacon can be called Father Deacon, the Rector of the church (monastery) is called Father Rector. One should not address clergymen as Holy Father (Reverend Father), as is accepted in Catholic countries; it is not necessary. One s sanctity is recognized upon their death. The clergys wives, as well as elderly women, should be addressed matushka. Bishops, Metropolitans, Patriarchs should be addressed Vladyka (Master) because of hierarchy. Sometimes one needs to address clergymen in writing. Priests and archpriests should be called "Reverend Father;" bishops, "Your Grace;" archbishops and metropolitans, "Your Eminence" or Your Beautitude ; the Patriarch, "Your Holiness". Sectarians who do not have priesthood reproach the Orthodox for allegedly violating the words of Christ: "And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven." (Mt 23: 9). But it is clear that "do not call" makes sense if you interpret it as "do not worship," otherwise the Lord's words can be turned into nonsense. In the 1st century, the Evangelist John the Theologian addressed the Christians children in his Epistles. The reciprocal appeal was obviously appropriate. It's not a matter of words, but an inner attitude towards it. Protodeacon Andrey Kuraev writes about it: "Even the most convinced Baptist calls his father a father and does not mind when his little son says 'Dad.' Here, the same way as with the icon: we can worship and serve only God. But it is possible and necessary to honor those due to whom we receive the gift of life." HOLY TRINITY May 28 th HOLY SPIRIT DAY May 29 th Sisterhood Patronal Feast day June 4 th Apostles fast begins From the desk of Fr Nazari, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, CHRIST IS RISEN! We finished our 40-day journey through Great Lent and our time of the joyful sadness of Holy Week, and once again we are blessed to enter into the glorious celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This is the celebration of life, this is the celebration of victory over sin and death, this is the celebration of our entry into the Kingdom of Heaven. For 40 days we journeyed together with all the mothers and fathers of the Holy Church who with their own lives defended the purity of our Holy Faith, and whose holy memory we celebrated during the Sunday of Orthodoxy, with the Holy defender of hesychasm St. Gregory Palamas, with the author of Penitential Canon St. Andrew of Crete, with St. Mary of Egypt, with St. John of The Ladder, and with all the other venerable and righteous fathers and mothers who are also together with us celebrating the Holy Day of the Lord s Pascha. Christ is risen from the dead and gave us life; Christ is risen from the dead and broke the spear of death that pierced through the human heart; Christ is risen from the dead and men and angels earthly and celestial rejoice today because we are alive in Christ." May our Lord enlighten every one of us individually, bless our families and parish communities and grant us inner peace and love for each other. CHRIST IS RISEN! We thank all of you who came and donated items for our blini luncheon which was a success. Thanks to all the hard workers, too! We couldn't have done it without you. Thanks again and God bless. Marina Burgmeier, President Charity Committee Our April charity collection will benefit the Gobezie Goshu Home, a charity designated by his eminence Archbishop Benjamin. This project is located in Adwa, Ethiopia. It provides housing and food for the elderly of Adwa, supports 900 school children, provides care for around 275 invalids, and provides necessities for 25 prisoners. Our May charity collection will go to the St. John of Kronstadt Home, an assisted living facility here in the Hollywood area. Several of our own parishioners are residents there. The home provides an intermediate level of care for residents who cannot live independently, but do not yet need around-the-clock skilled nursing services like those provided in a nursing home. Please give generously to these Orthodox charities. Marie McEntire, Chairman BAPTISMS: Victor Krylov.......February 21 st Damian Sushkov.... March 3 rd Milla Werts.... March 4 th Many years!
