One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along a beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The Lord replied, My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you. I d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I d like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I d like to leave an echo, whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun. Of happy memories that I leave when life is done. 5 6 When I am gone, release me, let me go, I have so many things to see and do, You mustn t tie yourself to me in tears, Be happy that we had so many years. I gave to you my love, you can only guess, How much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, But now it s time I travelled on alone. So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must, Then let your grief be comforted by trust, It s only for a while that we must part, So bless the memories within your heart. I won t be far away, for life goes on, So if you need me, call and I will come, Though you can t see or touch me, I ll be near; And if you listen with your heart, You ll hear all my love around you, soft and clear. And then when you must come this way alone, I ll greet you with a smile and a I am home in heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last. Did you wonder how I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh, but Jesus love illumined Every dark and fearful glade. And he came himself to meet me, In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth s shadows, Pray to trust our Father s Will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remains, You shall rest in Jesus land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! 7 8

O Lord, thou gavest her/him to us to be our joy and consolation. Thou hast taken her/him away from us; we give her/him back to Thee without a murmur though our hearts are wrung with sorrow. O Gentlest Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the soul of Thy servant...; bring her/him from the shadows of exile to the bright home of Heaven, where, we trust, Thou and Thy Blessed Mother have woven for her a crown of unfading bliss. We lost a mother with a heart of gold, How much we miss her can never be told, She shared our troubles and helped us along, If we follow her footsteps we can never go wrong. We miss you from your fireside chair, Your loving smile and gentle air. Your vacant place no one can fill, We miss you mother and always will. She was a mother so very rare, Content in her home and always there, On earth she toiled, in heaven she rests, God bless you mother, you were one of the best. Each time we look at your picture, You seem to smile and say, Don t be sad but courage take, And love each other for my sake. O Sweet Jesus, for the sake of Thy Bitter Passion and the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother, have mercy on her soul, and let the Perpetual Light of Thy Countenance shine upon her. 9 10 O Gentlest Heart of Jesus ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in purgatory, have mercy on the soul of Thy servant, Bring him/her from the shadows of exile to the bright home of heaven where we trust Thou and thy Blessed Mother have woven for him/her a crown of unfading bliss. Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me. In Loving Memory of (Address... if required) Aged... Years. To those who believe in Thee, O Lord, life is but changed, not taken away. Eternal rest grant unto... O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her/him. May she/he rest in peace. 11 12

We lost a father with a heart of gold, How much we miss him can never be told, He shared our troubles and helped us along, If we follow his footsteps we will never go wrong. We miss you from your fireside chair, Your loving smile and gentle air, Your vacant place no one can fill, We miss you father and always will. O Sweet Jesus, for the sake of Thy Bitter Passion and the sorrows of Thy Immaculate Mother have mercy on his soul, and let the light of Thy countenance shine upon him. Amen. 13 14 Good was his heart, in friendship sound Loved and respected by all around. A beautiful life came to an end, He died as he lived, everyone s friend. We shall meet again in a brighter land Where farewell is never spoken. We shall clasp each other hand in hand, And the clasp shall not be broken. We miss thy kind and willing hand Thy fond and earnest care, Our home is dark without you there, We miss you everywhere. We have loved him/her in life, Let us not forget him/her in death. Jesus, Mercy Mary, Help In Loving Memory of who died on aged... years. O Sacred Heart of Jesus Who bled upon the cross, Have mercy on dear..., We offer You his/her loss. HAIL MARY, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. 15 16

Gone from our home his smiling face, His cheerful happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone happy days! Good was his heart, in friendship sound Loved and respected by all around, A beautiful life came to an end, He died as he lived, everyone s friend. Did you wonder why I worked so hard, To organise was fun. But with Jesus as my leader, He said your work is done. And He came Himself to meet me, In that way so hard to tread. And with Jesus arm to lean on, Could I have doubt or dread. Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still. Try to look beyond earth s shadows, Pray to trust our Father s will. We shall meet again in a brighter land Where farewell is never spoken. We shall clasp each other hand in hand, And the clasp shall not be broken. Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each other that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before - only better, infinitely happier and for ever - we will all be one together with Christ. 17 18 Along the road to yesterday That leads me straight to you Are memories of happy days Together we once knew. A silent grief that s in our hearts No human eye can trace For many a broken heart is hid beneath a smiling face. A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God could have spared you If just for a few more years. It was a sudden parting Too bitter to forget Those who loved you dearly Are the ones who can t forget. May the God of Love and Mercy Care for our loved one who is gone And bless with consolation Those left to carry on. Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on the soul of who died on... aged... years. Fold him, O Jesus, in Thine arms And let him henceforth be A messenger of love between our human hearts and Thee. 19 20

IRISH BLESSING May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. You suffered much in silence, Your spirit did not bend, You bore your cross with dignity, Until the very end, As we sat beside your bedside, And watched you fade away, Our hearts were full of sadness, We could not ease your pain. Silent thoughts of times together, Bring memories that will last forever. 21 22 A little flower, just lent, not given, To bud on earth and bloom in heaven. In Loving Memory of aged... years. No last farewells were spoken, You never said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. 23 24

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time or reason, Will change the way we feel, For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried; We want to tell you something, So there won t be any doubt, You re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to live without. 25 26 We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty to the end, Until we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking We knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will, Forget you... dear. God grant me the... Serenity to accept the things I cannot change Courage to change the things I can and Wisdom to know the difference. 27 28

What is Dying? The ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says, She is gone. Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw her. The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her and just at the moment when someone at my side says, She is gone, there are others who are watching her coming and other voices take up a glad shout, There she comes!, and that is dying. 29 30 31 32
