Wishing all our readers a Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year A Pastoral Letter... Dear Friends, We are probably very familiar with the Christmas story, we have heard it many times before. Yet there is something amazingly fresh about it every time we hear of it. What is it about this simple Christmas story that brings us back to hear it year after year? And what is it s relevance to us today? The year 2010 has been a historic year in many ways. Who would have predicted by January that we were going to have the government plans for a reduction in welfare spending which is, directly or indirectly, associated with the rise in numbers of people who, at this Christmas season, are hungry, cold and lonely among us? Some are also feeling pain of life, ill, anxious or bereaved. It has been a year of increasing fear, of public sector job losses, anxiety and threats of violence. It has been a year in which people felt pressured, leading to breaking down of previously good relationship. And yet, it has been a year in which many of us, including St Michael s Parish Church members, have worked tirelessly to build up those relationships in the West Watford community, and offered a hand of friendship and reconciliation to those who are feeling isolated or are in need. And this is what this Christmas story is all about. The stories of individual and groups meeting together to listen, to talk, to understand and to build long healthy relationships. This is the amazing thing about this story of Christmas - God breaks with all our expectations, and does things differently. 2
God himself came down to the earth, as a tiny vulnerable baby, born in the squalor of a stable, and because we know that he came for our salvation, let us in heart and mind receive him in our families or where we will be on Christmas Day, and indeed continue to do so every day of our lives. I wonder how do we receive him? All of us in the Pastoral Team Fr Geoff, Violet, Martin and Fr George would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy blessed New Year. I do rely on what is sent in to produce SWORD each month. Something of interest you have done recently, a place you have visited, an anecdote to share, whatever you think may interest our readers, please send it to me. If you have any pictures to go with your article so much the better. Thanks also to the distributors who have taken the magazine out to people who do not or cannot visit St Michael s regularly. A big thank you to our advertisers for their support which helps us to off-set the cost of sending copies of SWORD to nursing homes, doctors surgeries, New Hope Trust, Peace Hospice etc. If you know of anyone who might like to advertise in SWORD please pass on my contact details to them. ST MICHAEL S MOTHERS UNION DIARY The Mothers Union will be joining in the 10 am Service of Holy Communion on Thursday, 20 January. Afterwards members will go to the Choir Vestry for coffee and a meeting when there will be a discussion about the items that Mothers Union members have been asked to make for patients in local hospitals. We hope to have some examples of items that have already been made. Our December coffee morning was a great success and we were very pleased to have a visit from Janet McInney, the new Chairman of the Deanery Committee. Altogether the morning raised 50 which will be donated to Mothers Union work. NEWS FROM MARIANNE REES - No. 7 AUSTRALIA (Sydney) I arrived back in Hervey Bay for a good night s sleep before I took another overnight bus to Airlie Beach. I was very lucky on the bus as I sat right at the back and behind my seat was a bed across the back which I dived onto when it got to 2am. I had definitely had enough of curling up across two seats. I arrived in Airlie Beach early at 8am and was able to check into my room, the weather looked pretty good and it was so much warmer than where I had come from. I checked in and slept for a little while before heading out to the beach and a walk around the town. Airlie Beach is a backpacker s heaven with the sun and many drinking places in the evenings, the best places which were normally packed were beaches and magnums popular hostels as well. As I headed over to the lagoon which is right on the seafront I bumped into Luke and Liam that I have been seeing up the coast - They were heading off for their sailing trip where they would stay on the boat for 2 nights. I had one evening in the hostel before I had to head off for my Whitsunday sailing trip. I decided to take a different boat trip to most people as I only had one day out sailing on Camira where we went to the famous White Haven beach, the sand is so fine on the beach you can clean your jewellery in it. The sailing trip was great you got lots of food, snorkelling and beach time as well as sailing through the Whitsunday s. Once the sailing had finished they dropped a few of us on Long Island where I spent two nights at the Long Island Resort. The resort was really good I enjoyed time on the beach, in the hot tub and took in some of the Island walks that were recommended. The weather has been really good, only every now and then there were some rain clouds which seemed to pass very quickly. After I had spent my time on the Island I headed back over to Airlie Beach to enjoy it for a few more days before heading on to the next destination. I left Airlie Beach on a really nice hot sunny day to travel on the bus for 9 hours up to Mission Beach, I arrived later than I had thought but the hostel was right next to the bus stop. It seemed like a very nice place to be everyone was sitting outside and chatting whilst cooking food. As I turned round to head to my room I bumped into my friend Luke who I have been seeing all the way since Bryon Bay I had a good catch up with Luke & Liam as they were leaving in the morning. Mission Beach is a small town with a great beach, from the beach you can see Dunk Island where lots of people head off on the ferry to go snorkelling. The most popular activity here is to do a skydive which I most definitely was not going to do as I m not so keen on heights. Since I have been in Mission it has been raining so I have just hung out with some of the other backpackers here, I had a great night with some other people from England (Jay, Alice, Freya, Sarah, Tim and Kelly) we played cards spoons, chase the 5
Ace and Donkey after which we wandered down the beach and sat with an Aussie couple who had made a fire for a while hearing about the best places in Australia. The weather got a lot better so I headed to the beach for some sun on my last day in Mission Beach. The next stop was Cairns where I arrived on a beautiful day my hostel was right on the waterfront next to the lagoon beautiful to look at from the lounge area. I met up with Tasha and Zorha in the evening to try out the famous Gilligan s bar where I only planned on staying for a few, but no more friends turned up and I went to the Woolshed as well met more people who were in the Australian Navy luckily I had set a lot of alarms so I didn t miss my pick up for Cape Tribulation. I was ready to leave by 7.30am for Cape Tribulation, on the tour we headed off for a scenic coastal drive to the Daintree River we went on a cruise down the river and saw 4 crocodiles - 2 females, 1 baby and a huge male. After the cruise we went for a rainforest walk at Jindalba where our guide pointed out trees, mangroves and wildlife. I arrived at the accommodation and it had started to rain rainforest = rain. The next morning I headed off early for a half day snorkelling trip where I got to snorkel for the first time over the Great Barrier Reef, the ride out to the reef was like a roller coaster with water features as the wind was so bad and I got stuck at the front of the boat even so it was amazing to swim with turtles and many different fish. In the afternoon we headed off to Mossman Gorge which was a beautiful river running through the rainforest as well as heading up to Alexander lookout for a fantastic view from here you could see out to where Steve Irwin had passed away when he got killed by the Stingray. After the afternoon tour I got dropped in Port Douglas where I was staying for 3 nights. Port Douglas is a wealthy tourist town full of resorts where Australians head to get some tropical weather and a lot of travellers that work, I was in a great location right in the town and near the beach. The local nightlife was in one bar called Ironbar the backpackers headed there after working and got busy by midnight. I also went to the Sunday market which was fantastic I bought some cheap bracelets and some fantastic artwork of the area and the Great Barrier Reef. I also went to the Marina and saw some nice yachts and the steam railway. After Port Douglas I headed back to Cairns where it was still raining and spent a couple of days, one of which I went diving out on the reef with a hired camera to take some photos. Arrived in Darwin to 32 degrees and hot sunshine, I had a walk around the city to see what there was to do and found some nice shops and pools. I walked down to the beach where nobody was and decided to walk back again as I didn t fancy swimming on my own you never know where those crocodiles hide. I had booked a self drive to Kakadu for 2 nights 3 days and went to meet the other girls in my group. Joanna, Josie, Myriam 6
and I had a briefing about the best parts to see, where to camp and how to use all the equipment and then drove to Woolworths to stock up on food supplies. As I was the only one who had a driver s license I had been nominated to drive the whole time through Kakadu this was a little stressful as I haven t driven for 4 months. Once we were set to go we went out for some free dinner in The Vic to get to know each other a little better before setting off together at 7am. We set off nice and early and took a 4 hour drive to Kakadu national park, first destination was the Morline rock hole. We were so pleased once we had reached it as it was beautiful and peaceful our agent had planned our trip with us giving us some local information on best spots to see that the tour companies would not take you to. It was a nice rock pool with a waterfall was very deep in areas and we were all a little crocodile anxious as the signs always say swim at your own risk. After lunch we set off to Gunlom, the journey here consisted of driving on unsealed roads with lots of bumps for 45 minutes first part of my driver training. We got to Gunlom and set up our tents as we were camping here for the night, the bottom pool was big with a familiar setting that you would see in Asia big tall rocks surrounding a pool. After relaxing there for a while we took the hike to the top pool which was definitely worth the exercise at the top there were numerous pools with the most amazing view out over Kakadu. We were not keen to try and walk down in the dark as it was quite difficult and we were all scared of snakes. A local told us that someone had stood on a snake in the campsite and was bitten it was their own fault for wearing flip-flops but still. We got back cooked, played cards and did some camping as we had no idea how to make a fire we sat around the torch and admired the stars in the sky. On the second day I drove us to Twin and Jim Jim Falls this has to be the best day of all. The drive to Twin falls was by far the most adventurous driving I had ever done I had to drive on unsealed roads, through sand, navigate the biggest off road holes and drive through a river that was 0.5 meters high the adrenaline rush was amazing. I won t lie I was really scared of the river but the novelty had worn off on the way back through I got it on video for proof. After all the eventful driving we got one of the best rewards at Twin Falls we walked through to the river, took a boat cruise to a section of rocks where we had to walk for 400meters over rocks to finally meet the small beach that had the most spectacular view of the waterfall. Unfortunately we were not able to swim here as they could not guarantee there would be no crocodiles. As we were leaving the car park we had some technical difficulty with the boot of the car it was stuck, so as we were 4 girls helpless we asked one of the adventure tour guides to help us and there he went and opened the boot as if we had just made it up highly embarrassing, after that we bumped into him again at Jim Jim Falls, I m sure he was flattered. 7
Jim Jim Falls was also a beautiful waterfall falling into a large plunge pool that we went for a swim in. It took all our effort to walk 1km over huge rocks to reach it but again the reward was worth it. The drive back was long and slow through the off roads and eventually we made it back to a campsite where we stayed for our second night. The tent pegs would not go into the hard ground and as usual it was not particularly windy until midnight and the wind went crazy we had to try and tie the cover to the poles as they were blowing away in the wind. On the last day we had the long drive back to Darwin but we stopped at Nourlangie which was an aboriginal rock art site and also Ubir. (They filmed some of Crocodile Dundee at Ubir) It was great to see some of the drawings on the rocks that could be thousands of years old with all different meanings. We also took the hike to the lookout where we were able to see across kakadu and over to Arnam Land this is where you are not allowed to enter unless you have a permit as it is owned by the Aboriginals. Once we got back to Darwin after I had driven over a 1000km we headed to The Vic for a last dinner together this turned out to be a late night dancing to a great live band. It was an exceptionally busy evening as it was the weekend of the Darwin Cup Horse racing so everyone was dressed for the races. The Drama students from Wesley College Melbourne will be performing "Romeo and Juliet" It will be action packed and will definitely shake the church rafters. It is also free. (although a donation to church funds would be welcome) They will be in Watford for a week being hosted by St Michael families. As part of their UK and French tour will also be performing to students at both WBGS and WGGS. 12
Watford Schools Trust is an interdenominational group working with churches and Christians in the Watford area. We are affiliated to Scripture Union and our Vision is to give every school child a clear understanding of the Christian Faith. We are recruiting a Chairperson and new Trustees to support this important work. We meet approximately 6 times a year and are looking for people with a heart for spreading the Good News in schools. ECUMENICAL CAROL SINGING IN WEST WATFORD The evening of Wednesday 15th December was chosen as the time when our three churches - St Michael & All Angels, Trinity Methodist and West Watford Free Church should work together to deliver some Christmas cards and sing carols on the Holywell Estate. So, after meeting at West Watford, led by Garth Woodhead, Margaret Millar and Geoff Calvert 14 of us set out into the cold evening air on the route planned by Garth. Dennis Beach and Alan Cockram played postman while the rest gathered round the light under various lampposts. This was not a money collecting exercise. We did not knock on doors but just moved from one place (lamppost!) to another with our messages of good will to all. At each stop we sang a well known carol from our leaflet and once we had found a common starting note soon got into our stride. Passers by looked and listened, curtains began to be drawn aside, windows opened, doors opened, friendly greetings were exchanged. We stopped outside the houses of 2 or 3 people well known at West Watford Free Church who had recently been unwell and were thanked most warmly. Mercifully the weather was reasonably good to us although the rain started to come down more as time went on and we were getting very cold. We were quite thankful when it was time to return to WWFC where Renee and her helpers were ready with hot drinks and tasty snacks for us. The Holywell Estate is a large part of our parish and this was a first try for our three churches to work together in this way and we all agreed it had been a success. In our small way we shared the message of Christmas with many people with whom we have little other contact. It was good, too, to meet together afterwards in an informal atmosphere when we were able to just enjoy one another s company. We hope that this is just the first of our joint efforts of outreach to our community and that more will join us next time. The story is told of a mother putting away the nativity set after Christmas when she noticed that the Baby Jesus was missing. She asked her 4 year old son if he knew where Jesus was. He replied Yes, but He doesn t want me to tell anybody. Why not? She asked. Because He doesn t want you to put Him away with the decorations, he said. What wisdom from the lips of a child! 15
From UCB Prayer for Today: Pray that Jesus will will be central. January 1st - 8th. New beginnings. A new year; a new day; new life in Jesus; new beginnings in family, friendships and employment. January 9th - 15th: Our community. Pray for neighbours, not just those who are easy but also for a love for the ones who we have a problem with. Pray for your own witness among those around us. January 16th - 22nd: A week of prayer for Christian unity. Keep us firm in the Apostle s teaching. Live in unity; share with those in need; live for the Kingdom; have a heart for those around us and make us kind in His service. January 23rd - 30th: Pray for men who are struggling in church; that churches would be more man friendly; for those with unbelieving partners or husbands; for more spiritually mature men to be raised up to mentor the younger men; men would be inspired by Jesus. Bottle tops: Thank you to everyone who has been saving and bringing along their plastic bottle tops. This has now come to an end as the nearest collection point is Portsmouth. They will now have to go in the recycling along with the bottle. Tail piece: When you are slumped on the sofa with your tummy telling you that it is groaning after Christmas lunch/dinner, and you reach into the bowl of fresh fruit - contemplate on this: The Clementine is a hybrid of tangerine and the Seville orange developed in 1902 by Father Clement Rodier, a French missionary in Algeria (Oran). This festive fruit, only eaten in quantities over Christmas is usually seedless and has a distinctive tangy taste. It is a great source of vitamin C. Why not try substituting Clementine juice for lemon essence to create a Clementine drizzle cake in the new year? Thanks Alan, sounds delicious.
