ALTERNATIVE GIVING OPPORTUNITIES THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON This year your Mission team will be starting a new opportunity for giving to those less fortunate and in need. Look for the GIVING TREE in the welcome center. Mission will display different ornaments on a small Christmas tree. You can pick what ministry you would like to contribute to and how much you would like to contribute. The missions include church pews and desks for Malawi, Hurricane Relief for Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, and the Living Waters Filtration System for Haiti. Please talk to Caroline Poiche or come to our info table in the Welcome Center for more information. December Special Offering - Christmas Joy Offering The special offering envelope for December supports the Christmas Joy offering. 50% of this collection supports the Presbytery Christmas Joy offering which provides assistance to current and retired church workers in their time of need and develops our future leaders at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges. The other 50% will be donated to the Bethany Hurricane Relief Fund. The mission team is currently working with hurricane victims in Texas and plans to assist in Florida and Puerto Rico as well. TAX REFORM AND YEAR-END CONTRIBUTIONS Significant U.S. tax reform is targeted for December 2017. As proposed, the tax reform could significantly impact charitable giving due to proposed increases in the standard deduction. For some individuals and families, it may be advantageous to accelerate contributions that were originally planned for 2018 into 2017. If you choose to accelerate contributions, please plan to communicate such to the church finance office in conjunction with your year-end contribution. Also, many families and individuals may see their tax burden reduced in 2018. If you ve always wanted to give more to the Lord s work at Bethany, but haven t been in a position to do so, a 2018 tax reduction might be a good opportunity! As the end of the year approaches, please keep in mind that contributions for 2017 must be received at the church no later than December 31, 2017. IRS rules provide that a check placed in the church offering plate in January 2018 cannot be recorded as a 2017 contribution, even if the check has been dated in 2017. Contributions postmarked in 2017 and received in 2018; however, can and will be credited to 2017. If you have questions, please don t hesitate to contact: - Mark Wolstoncroft Treasurer (412) 527-8212 wolstoncroft@gmail.com - Kim McCann Accountant (412) 221-5132 finance@bethanypresby.org Kim is generally in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday until 2:00 p.m. However, she will be away the week of December 16 th. The Men s Advent Breakfast following the Cantata this past Sunday was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who stopped down for a bite to eat before or after each performance. We are happy to continue this men s ministry and will be starting up a men s prayer group to study the Bible in the New Year.
