11-12-2017 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Wisdom 6:12-16 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Matthew 25:1-13 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don In today s Gospel, five foolish bridesmaids go out to meet the bridegroom without bringing any extra oil for their lamps. (The bridegroom in this story represents Christ.) When the bridegroom finally arrives at midnight, the foolish bridesmaids have to run off in the opposite direction to purchase more oil. By the time they get back, the door to the wedding celebration is locked. And the groom says to them I do not know you. A parable is a story told to teach a lesson. Today s parable is stated to provide us with the answers to why we need the gift of wisdom and why we need to be prepared daily for Christ s coming. Being ready is not about activity or preparation. We make ourselves ready by recognizing how God is at work in our lives. This week spend some time in quiet refection of this passage. Discern ways Jesus comes into your life. How do you welcome Him? One way to respond to Christ s invitation is to grow in your relationship with God through prayer. Determine ways you can increase your prayer life. Ask God for the grace of a heart that is not easily distracted but fully alive to Jesus presence in your world. Ceil and Steve have served our church for over 32 years as pianist and guitar/bass player in our music ministry. We appreciate all they have done to enhance our music as we sing our praises to the Lord. May God bless them abundantly and know that our prayers are with them always. We will truly miss them! A PRAYER FOR VETERAN S DAY God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm s way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. 4
