He has come up to the temple at Passover time and he is very angry about what he sees there. So he brandishes a whip to drive the money-changers and sacrificial animals out of the temple. Stop turning my Father s house into a marketplace! he says with frightening authority. He, more than anyone, knows how important prayer is to relationship with God. In the cleansing of the temple, Jesus is saying that the temple was meant to be a place of prayer for all. He wants everyone to be able to be in the holy and awesome presence of God. Jesus, who cleansed the temple with great zeal, is now ready once again, to clean our hearts and minds, so we can also be more fully in God s presence. In today s world, the constant distractions, concerns and worries can so easily numb us to the presence of God in our lives and in our prayer. Lent calls us to invite Jesus to clear away the things that keep us from connecting more deeply with God. This week I ask you to spend some quiet time discerning what in your life needs to be cleared out to allow the sense of God s presence to surface more. Spend some time in prayer asking Jesus to help you to clear the way so that you can more fully be aware of God s presence in your life.
