Emmanuel College Chapel Michaelmas Term 2017

Emmanuel College Chapel The Chapel exists as a centre for Christian life and worship. It stands in the centre of the College as a reminder of the spiritual dimension to life, whether we are conventionally religious or not. All members of the College and their friends are very welcome at its services, and are invited to share in its activities. Regular Services Sunday 11 am The Eucharist The Eucharist is the distinctive act of the Christian community. In it the scriptures are read and expounded and the central events of Jesus death and resurrection are re-presented in bread and wine. After the service members of the congregation go into Hall for brunch. Sunday 6 pm Evensong Evensong is service of words words sung, prayed, read and preached. It is the traditional service for evening and is led by the Choir. It includes a sermon, often given by a visitor to the College, designed to promote thoughtful reflection on the Christian Faith and the issues that it raises. The service is followed by drinks in C2, where there will be a chance to meet the preacher. Thursday 6 pm Sung Eucharist A meditative service led by the choir. There is a short sermon and the service lasts about 45 minutes, finishing before the end of informal hall. Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer Morning Prayer is said each weekday at 8.30am and Evening Prayer is said at 6pm (except on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Compline Compline is an atmospheric candlelit service for late evening. It will be sung twice this term on Wednesday evenings at 10pm.

The theme of the sermons at Evensong on Sundays this term is Questions, questions The Christian tradition contains a wealth of resources for grappling with the questions that face any age. Our preachers this term will consider a variety of questions that strike them as significant in our own day. Thursday 5th October, 6pm Welcome Service A Eucharist to mark the beginning of the new academic year and in particular to welcome new arrivals to the College. The service will be followed by a buffet to enable people to get to know one another. Everyone is welcome! Thursday 26th October, 6pm Corporate Eucharist for All Saintstide At All Saints we celebrate all those people in whose lives God has been visible. Their example encourages us in our discipleship and their fellowship sustains us in our journey of faith. The service is followed by a buffet to which all are welcome. Friday 27th October, 7pm Mozart Requiem by Candlelight St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square The Choir will be joining forces with the Brandenburg Sinfonia and former members of the Choir, Madeleine Holmes (1994), John Ash (2010), and James Savage-Hanford (2005), who will be singing solos, for a performance of the Requiem and other works by Mozart in Trafalgar Square in London. Tickets are available from www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/music/concerts

Thursday 2nd November, 6pm Sung Requiem for All Soulstide The Requiem or Mass for the Dead is the traditional service in which we pray the life giving power of Christ s resurrection for those who have died. We remember particularly members of the College and others who have died in the last year. The Choir will be singing the setting of the requiem by Mozart. Wednesday 23rd November, 6pm Commemoration of Benefactors We give thanks for all those whose past generosity has enabled the College to fulfill its mission to educate and inspire. The preacher will be Professor Catherine Pickstock, Fellow, Professor of Metaphysics and Poetics. Sunday 26th November, 6pm Advent Carol Service A candlelit service of music and readings that meditates on the themes of the season that leads up to Christmas. Sunday 3th December, 5pm Family Carol Service A service that is particularly suited to children of all ages.

Tuesday 5th December, 6.30pm London Carol Service The Choir will be singing at a special Emmanuel Carol Service at the Temple Church with drinks for Members and guests afterwards.
