Man After God - Moses Then He said, "Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And he sees the form of the LORD. Numbers 12:6-8a There are many clear references to The LORD s and Moses intimate relationship. Here are the ones I have found. I did not list all of the times The Bible says they talked, but kept this list to the times Moses was in the presence of the LORD. Can a person know and experience God? Moses is a perfect example of someone who became a friend of God. Studies included in this article are: Forty-Nine recorded times when Moses was in the presence of God For more information on this topic, please see: Man After God-David ; Man After God-Paul ; People Who Knew God ; Fellowship ; The LORD Appears To Moses In a Flame of Fire From the Midst of a Bush And the Angel of. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, "I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn." So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground." Moreover He said, "I am the God of your father the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me Exodus 3:2-6, 16 The LORD Delivers The Rod To Moses Then Moses answered and said, "But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, The LORD has not appeared to you. " So the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A rod." And He said, "Cast it on the ground." So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Reach out your hand and take it by the tail" (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand), "that they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you." Exodus 4:1-5 Page 1 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

The LORD Seeks To Kill Moses And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the LORD met him and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses feet, and said, "Surely you are a husband of blood to me!" So He let him go. Then she said, "You are a husband of blood!" because of the circumcision. Exodus 4:24-26 Moses Returns To The LORD With Questions So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? "For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all." Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh. For with a strong hand he will let them go, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land." And God spoke to Moses and said to him: "I am the LORD. "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them. Exodus 5:22-6:3 The LORD And Moses Have A Conversation When The People Would Not Believe And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the children of Israel go out of his land." And Moses spoke before the LORD, saying, "The children of Israel have not heeded me. How then shall Pharaoh heed me, for I am of uncircumcised lips? Exodus 6:10-12 The LORD And Moses Have A Conversation In The Land of Egypt And it came to pass, on the day the LORD spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, that the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "I am the LORD. Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you." But Moses said before the LORD, "Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh heed me?" Exodus 6:28-30 The LORD Leads Moses And The People Out of Egypt So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, What is this? that you shall say to him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. It shall be as a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt. Exodus 13:14, 16 God Leads The People Around By Way Of The Wilderness Of The Red Sea Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, "Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt." So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt. Exodus 13:17-18 Page 2 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

The LORD Leads Moses And His People Through The Wilderness And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people. Exodus 13:21-22 God s Continual Visible Presence Is With His People And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. "The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace." Exodus 14:13-14 The Angel of God Goes Before The Camp of Israel And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. Exodus 14:19 Jethro Assures Moses of God s Presence Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. Exodus 18:19 The LORD Calls To Moses From The Mountain And Moses Goes Up To God And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel. Exodus 19:3-6 Moses Returns With The Answer For The People Then all the people answered together and said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do." So Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD. Exodus 19:8 Page 3 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Moses Meets With The LORD and Returns To Warn The People Then the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. And the LORD said to Moses, "Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the LORD, and many of them perish. "Also let the priests who come near the LORD consecrate themselves, lest the LORD break out against them." But Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it. " Then the LORD said to him, "Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest He break out against them." So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them. Exodus 19:20-25 Moses Draws Near The Thick Darkness Where God Is So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was. Exodus 20:21 God Calls Moses Up The Mountain Now He said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. And Moses alone shall come near the LORD, but they shall not come near; nor shall the people go up with him. Exodus 24:1-2 Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the Seventy Elders Eat With God On the Mountain Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity. But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did not lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank. Exodus 24:9-11 Moses Enters Into God s Glory Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. The sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Exodus 24:14-18 God Shows Moses the Plan For The Tabernacle And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it Exodus 25:8-9 And see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain. Exodus 25:40 Page 4 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

God s Presence Will Meet With Israel You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel. Exodus 25:21-22 God Meets With Moses In The Tabernacle of Meeting Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the LORD went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp. Exodus 33:7 God Meets With Moses In The Doorway of The Tent of Meeting And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses. All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door. So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. Exodus 33:9-11 God Promises His Continual Presence And He said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. Exodus 33:14 God Promises That He Will Pass Before Moses And he said, "Please, show me Your glory." Then He said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. Exodus 33:18-19 The LORD Promises To Cover Moses With His Hand While He Passes By And the LORD said, "Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen. Exodus 33:21-23 Page 5 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Moses Presents Himself To The LORD So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain. Exodus 34:2 The LORD Covers Moses With His Hand While He Passes By Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth. Exodus 34:5-6 Moses Stays With God On The Mountain So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28 Moses Face Shines As A Result Of Being In God s Presence And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded. And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him. Exodus 34:33-35 The Cloud Covers The Tabernacle Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Exodus 40:34-35 All Israel Is Led By The Sight of God In The Cloud And Pillar Of Fire Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the LORD was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. Exodus 40:36-38 Page 6 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

The LORD Promises To Come Down And Anoint Seventy Judges So the LORD said to Moses: "Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. Numbers 11:16-17 The LORD Comes Down And Anoints Seventy Judges Then the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did so again. Numbers 11:25 God Meets With Aaron, Miriam and Moses In The Doorway of The Tabernacle of Meeting Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "Come out, you three, to the tabernacle of meeting!" So the three came out. Then the LORD came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward. Then He said, "Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid To speak against My servant Moses?" So the anger of the LORD was aroused against them, and He departed. Numbers 12:4-9 God Appears To Moses and Aaron In Response To Their Intercession So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them. Numbers 20:6 The LORD Shows Israel The Way The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place. Yet, for all that, you did not believe the LORD your God, who went in the way before you to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day. Deuteronomy 1:30-33 Moses Stands In Between the LORD and His People The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: Deuteronomy 5:4-5 Page 7 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Moses Receives The Tablets From The LORD These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. Deuteronomy 5:22 Moses Receives The Tablets From The LORD Then the LORD delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. Deuteronomy 9:10 Moses Witnesses To God s Faithfulness Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you And the LORD, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed. Deuteronomy 31:6, 8 The LORD Appears To Moses And Joshua Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, the days approach when you must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of meeting, that I may inaugurate him. So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of meeting. Now the LORD appeared at the tabernacle in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood above the door of the tabernacle. Deuteronomy 31:14-15 The LORD Shows Moses All The Land From Mount Nebo Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants. I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there. Deuteronomy 34:1-4 The LORD Buries Moses And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day. Deuteronomy 34:6 Page 8 2015 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

The LORD Knew Moses Face To Face But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. Deuteronomy 34:10 Moses Appears With Jesus At The Transfiguration And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Matthew 17:3-4 The Angel Of The LORD Appears to Moses In The Bush When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying, I am the God of your fathers the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses trembled and dared not look This Moses whom they rejected, saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge? is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. Acts 7:31-32, 35 Moses Face Shines As A Result Of Being In God s Presence Unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away. 2 Corinthians 3:7, 13 Moses Endures By Seeing God By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.
