85 My Siddur Kabalat Shabbat Friday evening, after the Shabbat candles are lit at home, we go to Shul for Kabalat Shabbat. The Kabalat Shabbat service begins with six introductory Psalms, one for each day of the week, to help set our mood and mind to joyously acknowledge Hashem's creation and anticipate the ultimate Shabbat the 7 th millennium the time of Moshaich. (Here are some of the evening's prayers. Only three of the six Psalms feature in this siddur as they are most commonly sung in Shul.) Kabalat Shabbat My Siddur 120 Moshe Rabeinu established that we read from the Torah in public and Ezra the Scribe instituted that we read from the Torah at least 3 times every week. Monday, Thursday ( market days ) and Shabbat (and holidays). On Mondays, Thursdays and Shabbat, we read the weekly Torah portion as divided across the weeks of the year. On Mondays and Thursdays, three people are called up for an Aliya to the Torah. On Shabbat, seven people are called up to the Torah for the Parasha reading and an eighth is called for Maftir and Haftarah. The Torah is also read on Jewish holidays, with varying numbers of Aliyot. In the desert, the heavenly cloud would signal the Jews to travel. Kabalat Shabbat My Siddur 130 We bid farewell to Shabbat with wine, spices and fire, noting that there are necessary separations in our world; Light and dark, holy and unholy and we are Hashem's holy nation. Let there be light, joy, gladness and honor, always! For the Havdalah service we prepare wine, good smelling spices and fire. Since the fire must have at least two wicks, a multibraided candle is most common. Two candles or matches held together are fine too. We recite this blessing after eating or drinking of three food categories: Certain grains (Mezonot*) 1. wheat 2. barley 3. oats 4. spelt 5. rye Special fruits of Israel** (Ha etz) 1. grapes 2. figs 3. pomegranates 4. olives 5. dates Wine or grape juice (Hagafen) We change a few words at the start and end of the bracha, depending on the food. This is how it works: Type of food Start with End with The five grains The fruits of Israel Wine or grape juice ע ל ה ר ץ ו ע ל ה ח י ה ע ל ה ר ץ ו ע ל ה רו ת ע ל ה ר ץ ו ע ל ר י ה פ ן ע ל ה ח י ה ו ע ל ה ל ל ה ע ל ה ע ץ ו ע ל ר י ה ע ץ ע ל ה פ ן ו ע ל ר י ה פ ן After eating all other foods or drinks, we say the Borei Nefashot. *Generally, when the grains are mixed with water, they become bread, and their bracha is Hamotzie, for which we recite the Birkat Hamazon. When there is no water, and the grains are still a snack or pastry, their bracha is Mezonot, and their after bracha is the Al Hamichya. ** Fruits of Israel means fruits about which the Torah praises the land of Israel. It does not mean fruits that were grown in the Holy Land.
