EUCHARISTIC MINISTER GUIDE St. Francis Xavier Parish www.sfxkearns.org

Eucharistic Ministers Protocol 1. Please arrive early enough (15 minutes prior to Mass) so that it can be verified that all the Eucharistic Ministers (EMs) are present. Sign in beside your name or beside the name of the person you are filling in for. 2. If you are not able to make your assigned time, please find a replacement from the EM list and notify Jeremy Castellano, so the schedule can be updated. If you have frequently not shown up for your assigned time, you will be removed from the next schedule. 3. Please make every effort to dress appropriately for your ministry as Eucharistic Minister. Remember that you are distributing the Body and Blood of Christ, a most sacred ministry. Dress modestly and avoid wearing jeans or shorts. Also, athletic shoes and casual sandals (e.g., flip-flops) are not appropriate. Put on the longest alb you can wear, tie a belt to your right side and wear a medallion for Eucharistic Ministers. 4. Provide a good example for those attending mass by singing, responding and paying attention to the liturgy. Consider studying the readings before mass so that you will be more engaged. Also, have a missallette for ease of this process. 5. Eucharistic Ministers process in pairs immediately behind the altar servers. Try to keep four (4) pews between yourself and whoever is in front of you. 6. On reaching the first pew (reserved for EMs), bow reverently before the altar and then enter the pew. 7. At the Sign Of Peace, give Peace to one another in the pew and then quickly, quietly and reverently proceed to the altar and line up in a semi-circle behind the altar. The priest or deacon will first give you the Body of Christ and then he will give you the cup along with a purificator. Bow before you receive each and respond, Amen, both times. 8. After you have received Communion, proceed straight out to the congregation. The lector will offer Communion to the altar servers. 9. Proceed to your distributing stations; there are four on Sundays and two on Saturdays. One minister on each side should stand at the far edge of the sanctuary and the other just a few feet closer to the center. Please be sure to stand far enough away from the center so that there will not be a back-up in the Host line, but not crowding each other, either. 10. If you are distributing the Body, do not lift the host too high or dramatically. Lift the host up slightly above the vessel, being held at mid-chest, look them in the eyes and say, The Body of Christ. and then place it in the center of one of their palms or on their tongue. 11. If you are distributing the Blood, offer the cup to each communicant by holding it up, look them in the eyes and say, The Blood of Christ. Do not use the person s name. After the person has received, be sure to wipe the rim of the cup touched by the lips and then turn the cup a quarter turn. Never guide the chalice to or away from someone. Let them take it out of your hands and return it to you in the same spot.

12. If you run out of the Precious Blood, place your purificator over the top of your chalice, so people in line know your out and return to the credence table and place your cup and purificator on the tray. If you have extra Precious Blood after communion, return to the credence table and consume the remainder. Either way, after communion, once your cup is empty, place it on the tray along with your purificator and return to the reserved pew all together. 13. Eucharistic Ministers join in the recessional by stepping out of the pew after the altar servers pass, bowing to the altar, turning inward (toward the other each other) and recessing down the aisle in pairs. Remember to keep four (4) pews between you and whoever is in front of you. 14. Wait for Father s blessing, return your missallette and return to the sacristy to change your clothes and clean-up. 15. After the recessional song has concluded, all EMs should follow the directions posted over the sinks in the sacristy to assist them in the task of cleaning the vessels and preparing for the next service. Spills If wine is spilled on the floor please use your purificator to wipe up the spill and then lay the cloth over the spot, where it will remain until mass is over. There should be an extra purificator on the Altar for your use. If wine is spilled on someone s clothing, let them use the purificator to clean it up as best as possible and again use the extra purificator from the altar. If you spill wine on your alb, after mass set the alb aside and let Father or an MC know so that it can be cleaned. Watching As the Communion line gets shorter, watch the other side of the altar and the other EMs. If both cup ministers have run out and there are still two EMs on the side you are on, one of you should move to the other side. Remember Don t feel rushed. Take your time and do things as reverently as possible. Everyone makes mistakes. Just do your best and show up for your appointed time. Your dedication is appreciated. God Bless. Misc: The MC and lector will distribute the Precious Blood to servers and both the Body and Blood to people in the congregation who can't go through the line. This will allow both the priest and deacon to start giving communion to both lines and allow the EM's to get in place right away so the first people through the line will be able to drink from the chalice.

* As a Eucharist Minister it is your responsibility to make sure people consume the Body and Blood of Christ properly. If you see someone walking away with the Body of Christ, stop them and ask them to immediately consume it or give it back. Dipping the Body of Christ in the Blood is also not allowed. If you cannot make it when you are scheduled, please find a replacement from the EM list. Please notify Jeremy Castellano of any schedule changes at 801-967-2736 or email: sfx@q.com Written by: Brenda Hollingsworth Head of Eucharistic Ministers St. Francis Xavier Parish
