W ELCOME to this Service of Worship at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich on this Pentecost Sunday. We are glad that you are here and hope that this time of worship, music, reflection and community is restorative for you. May the blessing of this community and the blessings of God s love greet you today. PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able please stand Seating of latecomers PRELUDE Piece Pour Grande Orgue CALL TO COMMUNITY Please sign and pass the red book. Dr. Craig Scott Symons, organ Joseph Jongen Rev. Mark D. Montgomery PRAISING GOD * OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION Come Down, O Love Divine Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 239 OPENING PRAYER Come Holy Spirit, come Come Holy Spirit, come Illuminate our hearts O come, Holy Spirit, come. CALL TO CONFESSION CONFESSING TO GOD PRAYER OF CONFESSION (In Unison) Our greatest peace has been found when the Holy Spirit has consumed us. Forgive us for the times when we ignore the spirit that connects us.

Our greatest love has been recognized when we ve understood God s love for us. Forgive us for the time when we refuse to share this love with others. Great joy has been celebrated in the birth and resurrection of Jesus. Forgive us for the times we deny the Christ among us. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *GLORIA New Century (black) Hymnal 754 Glory to God the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Amen. HEARING GOD'S WORD FIRST LESSON Pat Larrabee Psalm 104:24-34, 35b Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made Othem all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it. These all look to you to give them their food in due season; when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! SCRIPTURE ANTHEM Come, Holy Ghost The Chancel Choir Thomas Attwood Lynette Pfund, soprano SECOND LESSON W John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 hen the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. * HYMN Holy Spirit, Truth Divine Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 242 SERMON The Spiritual Touchdown CALL TO PASTORAL PRAYER Rev. GOING FORTH TO SERVE GOD *CLOSING HYMN AND RECESSION Send Down Thy Truth, O God Pilgrim (red) Hymnal 237 *BENEDICTION *CHORAL RESPONSE POSTLUDE Trumpet Tune in D Flor Peeters Music Notes: Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) was born in London, England. Throughout his career, he held several important positions in England; that of Organist and Composer at Chapel Royal and Organist/Master of the Choristers at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He also taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music. American organist and composer, Richard Wayne Dirksen, lived from 1921-2003 and spent nearly his entire career associated, in some fashion, with National Cathedral in Washington, DC, where he served from 1977-1988 as Choirmaster and Organist. The anthem was commissioned by the Atlanta Chapter of the American Guild of Organists for the opening service of the National Convention in 1992. Originally composed with brass and organ, the version heard this morning does not lack energy and vitality without brass. The First Congregational Church of Greenwich declares itself to be open and affirming; open to all for participation, membership, leadership and employment, and affirming of all who wish to join us

as children of God. We continue to give thanks for God's guidance in our journey of faith. We have child care for babies and toddlers every Sunday. Your children are always welcome for the entire service or for a respite time if needed. Please see an usher if you need directions. The 10:00 am Service is broadcast live each week on WGCH 1490 AM Radio. In addition, the service is available through the church s website: www.fccog.org. A bulletin can be found there as well as a link to the live broadcast. Previous sermons may also be found there. Calendar TODAY Church School There is no Church School today because it is Memorial Day weekend. There is only one more regular Church School Sunday on June 3. Then June 10 is Church School Recognition Sunday when we thank our teachers, congratulate our graduating seniors and give Bibles to our third graders. Summer Church School begins on June 17. We need many more teachers for next year. Sign-up is at Coffee Hour. Youth and Cherub Choir Rehearsals There is no Youth or Cherub Choir rehearsal today. Bible Study This week in our Corinthian adventure we'll try to make modern sense out of Paul's advice on food offered to idols. We will also have to tackle a couple of other decidedly non-modern notions Paul puts forward such as veils for women. There was a reason for this advice in Corinth as we shall see, but it presents a real problem to literalists who want Christians to live 1st century lives. In fact, the passages we will consider this morning will open the way to a new freedom, tempered always by consideration of others. It should be interesting so join us as we make the run up to I Corinthians 13 in its context.

Sue Asselin, RN is available in Room 203 after the Worship Service. Stop in to have your blood pressure checked or discuss any health concerns. Friendship Quilt for Michelle and David Young Today is your last chance to sign a square at Coffee Hour for the Friendship Quilt for Michelle and David Young. We need a finite number before we can plan the quilt and start with the actual piecing together next month. There is no 5:00 pm linc service today because of Memorial Day weekend. Please join us next week. Program There is no Y! Program today, but mark your calendars for the JPF Lock-In on Friday, June 1, from 8:00 pm until 8:00 am Saturday, June 2. Permission slips are needed to participate. NEXT WEEK Summer Choir begins June 3 Please join us next Sunday morning, June 3, at 9:00 am in the Meetinghouse for a warm-up and rehearsal for the music being done that Sunday. Anyone is welcome to come before the start of the service to learn a simple anthem. Come any Sundays that you are available and help lead the congregation in worship. In addition to the Sunday mornings, a new option is available on the first Sunday of June, July, and August. On those Sundays, anyone who would like an extra rehearsal of the anthems for that month is welcome to meet in the Choir Room (note room change from the May Meetinghouse Monthly) at around 11:15 am to get a jump-start on the upcoming anthems. No reservation is necessary!
