Lesson Text: Genesis 22:1-14 Sunday, March 4, 2018 King James Version (KJV) I. ABRAHAM S TEST OF FAITH (Genesis 22:1-2) 1. And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. II. ABRAHAM S OBEDIENCE TO GOD (Genesis 22:3-10) 3. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4. Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

5. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 6. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. 7. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8. And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9. And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. III. GOD S PROVISION FOR ABRAHAM (Genesis 22:11-14) 11. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven,

and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. New International Version (NIV) I. ABRAHAM S TEST OF FAITH (Genesis 22:1-2) 1. Sometime later God tested Abraham. He said to him, Abraham! Here I am, he replied. 2. Then God said, Take your son, your only son, whom you love Isaac and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.

II. ABRAHAM S OBEDIENCE TO GOD (Genesis 22:3-10) 3. Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5. He said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you. 6. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7. Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, Father? Yes, my son? Abraham replied. The fire and wood are here, Isaac said, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? 8. Abraham answered, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And the two of them went on together. 9. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the

altar, on top of the wood. 10. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. III. GOD S PROVISION FOR ABRAHAM (Genesis 22:11-14) 11. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, Abraham! Abraham! Here I am, he replied. 12. Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said. Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son. 13. Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided. PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION:

1. God tests us to prove our faith, but He never tempts us to do evil (Genesis 22:1-2; James 1:13-14). 2. God demands that our love and devotion to Him exceed that which we have for any human being (Genesis 22:2; Matthew 10:37). 3. Unquestioning obedience to God s revealed will is not optional for His servants (Genesis 22:3-4). 4. If we faithfully seek to obey the Lord, we don t have to fear the consequences (Genesis 22:5-8). 5. Our fear, or reverence for God, is indicated by our willingness to surrender to Him what is most precious to us (Genesis 22:9-12). 6. Worship and thanksgiving should be our immediate response to God s faithfulness (Genesis 22:13-14). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
